@megaaaaaaannn well all the ones in the video have played Elphaba in Australia at some point in time...standby goes on when the lead is sick (they can go on for a full show or be shoved on half way...happened quite frequently in Aus)...and an understudy is someone in the ensemble who performs every night (in the ensemble) but is like a backup for the standby. If the lead & the standby are sick the understudy will go on :)

just listened to this again, i really like zoe's!! i've never heard her sing this before, but she's awesome! and the laura one that you have is much better than when i saw her live, and i've never heard her do that note like patrice did, except i think she did it much better than patrice haha

@GlowBored I just said Amanda fell ill... They needed another Elphaba because they were the only two so they trained Zoe up while Carmen was here and Patrice left. It's not really anything to do with Patrice it's mainly because Amanda was struggling to do the shows (due to being sick)

@jasonr1929 Carmen Cusack (an American Elphaba) temporarily came out to Aus because Jemma had trouble coping since Amanda was sick + we had understudy issues. And yes Laura's face is half green because at the time of this vid it was the closet photo. It was at a mac makeup wicked promotion

@GlowBored because we had Amanda (lead), Jemma (standby), Patrice (the only 'understudy'). Amanda became ill for long periods of time and Patrice left to have a baby. They flew Carmen out to Aus to help Jemma while they trained up a new understudy (which was Zoe).

@GlowBored your kind of a bit off on how the "understudy" system works. There is the lead (in this case Amanda), a Standby (in this case Jemma) and an Understudy (in this case Patrice). Jemma is not in the show EXCEPT for when Amanda calls out for the night and Jemma gets to perform. Patrice is in the ensemble every night and goes on even less frequently than Jemma. The understudy (in the case of Elphaba) is sort of like a second cover, performing only when the standby is unable

@delibessylvia2 to be honest Laura has only done that riff once (that we know of). In comparing just these audios I would say Laura, but in general Jemma. She is definitely the most consistent

i think every1 of them is brilliant at it. laura was amazing but jemma is by far the best elphaba ever. she seems to hit the notes perfect everytime nd with such power too. add the fact that she is a brilliant actress as well. she is sensational!

from listening to these, i think it sounds like jemma is the one who is actually acting the song the best. a lot of the others seem more like they are showing off. well, not actually showing off, but making it more flashy and not really acting it as much
