The reason why this sounds so clean is Jerry remixed a lot of the guitar work in the studio before the album was released as we know some live music, especially from the Dead, tends to flow in many different directions and not in an orderly pattern. With that said I am glad Jerry re-mixed this as it makes it stand out from the countless other bootleg and non-bootleg versions of this.
Definitely agree! the '72 versions are timeless, but I'm a big fan of '73-'74 because they had the Feeling Groovy Jams between the China and Rider and they really jazzed them up. Although it's not a full China > Rider Don't forget about 1972-01-02 Good Lovin' > China Cat > Good Lovin'!!!
My favorite version is probably 1974-10-17. The second night of the 5 day Winterland run in October. I uploaded so check it in my profile!
As Bill Graham said " On any given night the Grateful Dead are the best fucking rockand roll band in the world" They were this night. God how I miss them.
If 90 feet between home and first is as close as mankind has ever come to perfection, this version of this song(s) is second. Absolutely perfect! Masters of their craft at the height of their game. I heard this version when I was in 7th grade and stopped listening to Hall and Oates and became a Deadhead. I was the first one in my school which was kind of cool. Many followed and thank me to this day. A Band beyond description...
in this version especially, when Jerry sings "comic book colors on a violin river cryin leonardo, words from out a silk trombone" the world becomes a better place.
Nothing but love for the boys, for ever and ever, but just to clarify: the reason the Europe '72 album has the tightest arrangements ever (especially for the time) is that they did a lot of post-production on this album; it's almost more of a studio album than live. One of the most unintentionally innovative things about the Dead's sound system that became the Wall of Sound the next year is it actually kept the channels separate enough to be able to remix later if you wanted to.
I've heard 10 or 20 versions of "I Know You Rider." A lot of variability in how they performed this song, but this one is without doubt the best. Just superb transitions and phrasing. The piano contribution from Godcheaux is just outstanding, and is one of the main things that makes this version so good. He doesn't try to hog the show, he understands his role perfectly, and just contributes very thoughtfully to the overall effort. Also the harmony and Garcia's guitar work make this a classic.
@Walkingshadow1 so well said with the piano in this particular version of the tune, I thought it was just me upon first hearing it! But no... that's how music is, that's how you tell a good tune, by its good fans' agreement with what makes them feel good. Subjectivity is all good and dandy but we all have ears and we know a real jam when we hear one eh?
@Walkingshadow1 thats coming from a different musical point of view i beleive this is almost too tight. i like it when they get much weirder and structured different
@Walkingshadow1 i've listened to alot of songs that wowed me every time. but, my overall favorite China/Rider Gonna Miss Me is here on '72 Europe Album. i go into a sort of rapture each time i hear it
Of everything in my collection, I still think this is my favorite. Hard to believe it's been 15 years, I still miss Jerry, there's been some imitators that are good, but none like the Master himself.
@BLUR600 Got a couple 'Cats" from late 60s for you that will blow you mind, and this one away. This is a clean, honed,'well spoken' version, (too short,) though I agree. One of favorites.
@BLUR600 Well the only problem with this one is the lack of extended Feeling Groovy jam in between China and I Know You Rider. An excellent theme they mimicked in many dark stars and just isn't China/Rider without it.
@BLUR600 Strand Lycem, may 23rd 72 (I think that's the date. The Mr charlie on eurpoe 72 is from this show as well) Is the only thing that comes close) its not as long, I think its just a little tighter in someways, but both ones are magic
@BLUR600 i've pretty much heard as many as you have and my favorite China Cat Sunflower/I Know You Rider is this one. they were just really "On" so just love it because you can! the segue between the songs is fascinatingly mesmerizing too
China Cat Sunflower is one of The Dead's best songs.

I think the China/Riders from '72/'73/'74 are THE best ever, the Golden Age of this duo, IMHO.
some examples: 9/24/72; Dark Star>CCAT>Rider. 2/17/73; HC Sunshine>CCAT>Rider.
6/26/74; CCAT theme>Jam>CCAT>Rider (this is my personal fave), and so on...they will all blow your socks off! Cheers and here's to Jerry G! :o)))

The Dead will never die. Searingly good stuff here.
I've been listening to this for 30 plus years (though not continuously)
and it's fresh and poignant every time I let it surge though my synapses.
The bridge between the two songs on Europe '72 is stellar.
