What a wonderful voice. Why do they destroy the beauty of her voice with such a terrible outfit and scenery. Is this the modern way to destroy the magic of Opera....???
I can understand why Kandinsky decided to change completely his life after listening to Lohengrin. The colors present in this masterpiece really impressed him.
development or directiojn of motivation, then almost silent when she breaks down in the final scene and has her finest acting
opportunity- many of the greatest Wagner artists sound marvelous in one or two productions in their early career, then go on to other Wagner operas or else take on the ore dramatic and satisfying role of Ortrud.
I will write one - if you promise to post the scream on YouTube. But I totally agree with you - I can't believe how people always rant about "too modern" Wagner settings. I think Wagner's music craves for modern and innovative settings. For example, Syderberg's innovative Parsifal film serves the music perfectly
OH GOD, WHY DIDN'T THEY GET HER "SALOME" ON FILM? Sorry for shouting, but Karita Mattila is one of the only great sopranos who can sing this stuff and isn't the size of an SUV.
And Salome's premiere was by another Finn, Aino Ackté - but Karita even lived years in my neighbouring house, but I never saw her (busy girl). (I "talk to stragers", and would have suggested her to sing twice the "müdgewordenen" instead of the much more coommon long "Aaaaaaaa-ugen" in "September", but she obviously read my thoughts, because on the Berlin record she aready does that (it matters, sounds better when "sordino"...)
Well, I have to say I think Mattila is a revelation - very few Wagner sopranos are quite as fine in the looks or acting departments. Saw her at the Royal Opera, London about ten years ago performing Elsa... Absolutely marvellous! And this is my favourite opera, so she really had to impress me! So glad you've put this on YouTube, thank you.
I was in the audience and I can tell you that her sound is really HUGE, and Elsa is a "blond" heroin anyway, so she doesn't need to be as heavy as a Brunnhilde.
I have seen here in Chicago as Pamina in 1991, and then as Donna Anna in 2004 and Manon Lescaut in 2005. I want to see her Salome at the Met in 2008-2009 season! Also her Jenufa in Los Angeles in September 2007. She is absolutely amazing! I have all of her solo discs.
Why not indeed? Luana de Vol sang her first Brunhilda in her late 50s at Bayreuth after years in the chorus I believe. She is still singing big roles.
Get a good teacher, learn German and save enough money to go to some good auditions and pay for good publicity. And go to Bayreuth to see some Wagner. I may be able to help with tickets. We need some more Wagnerian Singers, so if by chance you have it, go for it.
Hi, I've just read your message to mistyrow.I'm a singer too, and I also would like to have some advice. What do you mean by "go to some good auditions and pay for good publicity"?
It's great to watch to an Elsa that isn't only a fragile and naïve woman! Mattila has such a lush and involving voice and a great stage presence and all of this makes her Elsa braver and more self-determined. Her singing is simply extraordinary!
TOO GORGEOUS a lady and singer for words so I will just listen and die!!!

Elsa is one of the more thankless roles
in the Wagner repertory - over 700
lines of ABSOLUTELY beautiful melody
to sing with virtually no character
development or directiojn of motivation, then almost silent when she breaks down in the final scene and has her finest acting
opportunity- many of the greatest Wagner artists sound marvelous in one or two productions in their early career, then go on to other Wagner operas or else take on the ore dramatic and satisfying role of Ortrud.
