Canon 7d Disabling AGC using an mp3 player. - DSLR Film NOOB

@CrowJellyFilms Yes. AGC is probably what is causing your problem. This trick or the one Dave Dugdale will make things better for you. Also check out the Juicedlink DS214.

Okay about my comment. I just verified it and it works perfectly

You can even monitor at line level without the Headphone amp.

Just use a standard headphone splitter to add the mic on one input and headphone on other

Thanks mate. I like the mixer idea. which model is the one you're using in this video? did a quick search for xlr mixer on ebay, they seem to be more studio type mixers.

@BDogbz Not really much you can do about AGC in post. Either dual system sound or tricking AGC are the only way to go on the 7d. The T2i has the magic lantern hack as does the 5d and 60d. The 7d is the only camera that doesn't have a fix.

Hey man I hit up Canon and they said they are not awear of any upcoming firmware update that will disable AGC, I asked em as im a new 7D owner. =( sad face.

that's cool but, I'm a noob at this.... how would you sync the start recording time of the camera and the mp3 player or an H2 for that matter. Do you just press record and then sync at post production or is there a way to fire them up simultaneously?

@descargamusicalny The mp3 player isn't recording its playing back a 19k signal that forces the AGC of the camera to stay and a set level. This allows you to properly properly record audio into one channel on the camera. To sync audio in post you need to align the audio recorder with the audio from the camera.

@CYNFELYN23 Lenses tend to hold there value so if you can only afford th 50mm 1.4, you can always buy it and and save up, then sell it when you have enough to get the 50mm 1.2. Its better to use what you have then to have nothing until you have the best.

@itsonlyalexrogahn Yes it will work with the 550D. Or you could use the magic lantern hack that was just released. It allows you to turn AGC off.
