Wow. Not to be mean but for having Edison in your name you have surprisingly little knowledge of electricity. A watt is the power dissipated by a current of 1 ampere flowing across a resistance of 1 ohm. It has absolutely no linear relationship with heat and watts.
@Phunkedub I'm taking Physics right now. Do you know what the definition for a Watt is? It's 1 joule per second. Joules are a unit of energy, and as with all units of energy they are also units of heat. You are thinking of a watt only in terms of electricity, in which case a watt is a volt-amp (Volts X Amps = Watts); Ohm's law doesn't tell the whole story. For example, 1 amp at 120 volts is 120 watts. Next time you accuse someone of knowing little, you might want to check your facts first.
@edisonphono1 Touche my friend, touche. I did know Ohm's law and what a joule is but I have never taken physics. Maybe in a simple physics problem the 2 would be linear but I can tell you from experience this is not a linear relationship with light bulbs, I would assume because of ballasts and size of glass covering. 6 27 watt Daylight CFL's ran my buddies cab 10+ degrees lower with the light bulbs within 3 inches of the plant rather than a 150 watt HPS well over 6 inches away, remote ballasted
@Phunkedub There's a simple explanation for your CFL lights being cooler: you had more bulbs spread out in more space, with heat being dissipated more through air. 150 watts in one spot will be more intense heat than 150+ watts spread out to six spots. Also, the heat coming from a CFL is coming from a large glass spiral, not a small arc tube; it acts like a heat sink. Watts are energy. Find a 15w incand. and a 15w CFL. Let both warm up, and feel each bulb, you'll see that they feel the same.
OK, to back ambalanceman62 up, there is no danger in touching this bulb. Look, I learned a very useful saying when it comes to heat in light bulbs; "A Watt is a Watt is a Watt!" HEAT=ENERGY=WATTS!! A 150 watt HPS bulb will get just as hot, and not any hotter than, a 150 watt incandescent bulb. And I haven't heard of anyone being afraid of touching a standard light bulb. The glass is too far from the arc tube to matter. You can get 500 watt incandescent bulbs, and I guarantee you can touch it.
@edisonphono1 I have no idea where you get your info from but are you trying to tell me that a regular light bulb, a CFL and an HPS put off the same heat and light per watt? Why are they pushing CFL's as a "green" alternative to regular bulbs? How come a 1000w HPS runs around 150,000 lumens while the EXACT same ballast with a Halide is 80,000, almost half of the lumens?
@Phunkedub No, that's not it at all. A 60 watt EQUIVALENT CFL bulb is around 14 watts. It puts out 14 watts of heat. The more light a bulb puts out per watt just means that the bulb is creating more light energy from heat (i.e., more efficient). That is why a CFL gets warm, but not hot. Watts are a unit of heat, and lumens are a unit of light. More efficient light sources have more lumens per watt. HPS is brighter (more efficient) than MH, but in bulbs of the same wattage, heat is the same
hello, i have a 150 hps bulb at home and tride to use a regular scoket. well i have failed trying to get it on, but i see you some how have done it . please tell me how you wired everything ( including ballast) to get that bulb working in your room. i highly suggest you make a wiring video because there are not any online. i will be waiting :)
I wouldn't worry about touching it. Can easilly be cleaned with rubbing alcohol. If anything, I'd be concerned with the oil absorbing light. These lights are outside through hurricanes and they don't blow when they run the night after.
I'm an electrician that specializes in HID lighting (high/low pressure sodium, metal halide, mercury vapor, etc...) and touching the lamps (bulbs for the layman) WILL NOT hurt them. I have handled these and hundreds of others with dirty, wet, sweaty, bloody, paint covered or otherwise contaminated hands, and the lamps still lasted their full lives. As mentioned before in the comments, touching lamps is only harmful to high wattage halogen incandescents (long skinny ones with a filament) .
I prefer to keep oil off high temp lights. Why would you not take the small precaution to not get oil on them? It will form a spot that gets hotter and allows less energy to out of the light. It may me a small amount but why not keep them clean?
@ambalanceman62 im a lighting engineer and lighting manufacturer and what you are saying is absolute rubbish, no lamps should ever be touched whether they run on a resistive or inductive load..
it reduces lamp life and lowers lumens output...
(long skinny ones with a filament) .pmsl ... you idiot !!
Thank you finally an an answer from somebody who knows what they were talking about. After shutting the lamp down I cleaned it, and had cleaned it before.
@VTownDown That only applies to halogen bulbs the arc tube on these lamps are contained by the outer glass envelope which would be the only danger from fingerprints.
not everyone knows, and i was just alerting him, in case. unlike you id rather not see someone take glass in the eye, so stop being a little fuck and just leave people alone.
Attacking me for serving a legit fair warning is trash of the lowest kind, and you sir, need to be murdered.
lol "its cool to the touch right now"............you JUST turned it on, would you expect any bulb to be hot at this point? Not even a 1000 watt would have began to put off heat, no bulb would.
And one more thing, these take some time to warm up. It may be cold to the touch to start with, but a minute or less after it has that yellow glow it it burns you to touch it. After power down, it takes AT LEAST 2 minutes to cool back to a safe-to-touch temperature (don't want to burn your hand), and at last 15 minutes to reach room temperature again.
He had some spare supplies in his truck you see, so he figured he could give it away. Probably not standard policy. I wonder if he got fired for that act of generosity.
Yellow glow takes about 2min to achieve (by vaporizing sodium with hot starting gas). The starting gas is xenon (same as camera flash) which makes white light. The shape of the arc tube inside is clearly an HPS lamp, not metal halide.
The problem would be if he touched the arc tube inside somehow. That would contaminate the tube and weaken it. The outer glass bulb is there just for protection of the arc tube.
the natural oil on your skin will eventually lead to the bulb exploding when it gets hot. you should NEVER touch a hps bulb with bare hands, even if its still in a box. YOU stop being an asshole
It's the tube with the gas (in this case) or the tube with the filiment (with halogen) that you don't want to touch. The outer glas envelope is there just to protect the tube inside.
by touching that bulb you just killed 30% of the bulbs life dont let the oil from ure skin touch the bulb it could break or blow out if u do touch it make sure you wipe it with a dry clean rag lesson for today guys lol
That's an excellent idea but here's my only problem, in a high moisture indoor enviroment how do you prevent moisture from getting in the ballast?? peace
ya econolight stopped selling them because they were not a good seller... MY ASS! best seller ever... problem was they were too cheap I think lol oh well fuck econolight
The whole setup was $20, the lamp, ignitor, and ballast. It was a really good deal while it lasted but you can't get this model anymore unfortunately :(
I talked to some guy changing who worked for the Seattle City Light who was changing streetlights, when changed the bulb in a sodium vapor streetlight fixture near my apartment. He gave me the works for free. 100W HPS bulb + power unit (ballast and starter), for $0. You can't beat that price. Ha ha.
You sir are an idiot. Perhaps you've never seen an HPS light start-up. They take awhile and bridge across several different color spectrums before reaching theirs. At the time my phone could only record short clips, otherwise i would have recorded at least a minute so that people could see the full light up. This was just to show that the 20 hps from econolight was easy to modify and use.
You know, these lights get brighter than that, they take about 3-4 minutes to warm up all the way. Also, when they are warmed up i suggest not touching the bulb not only because it can explode, but that when its hot its HOT. You will get burns.
yes all HPS lamps do come with a ballast some are inside the reflector above the bulb but you want the new ones where the ballast is seperate form the reflector and theres not so much heat around the bulb area ballast for HPS get very hot so stick on a piece of thick glass on a brick
so this cost around 20 bucks? normally they cost about 150 man!
