@normansmother1 Thank you for your comments. I agree that we should encourage movie producers and companies to restore as many old films as possible; it makes a world of difference in the experience, the appreciation of all of the dimensions of this kind of art.
Yes, this is one of my favourite movies of all time because it shows us that different points-of-view are an integral part of life. We all need to have more "give and take" with each other as tolerance and forgiveness are the cornerstones of peace and justice...Wayne Kurtz.
The edge of a samurai sword is drawing a bird on the ground, a tiger is watching with all its agility and calmness, the thunderbolt is tearing apart the cloudy sky, a poem is written, it is to be grasped with all its mirror images...Kurosawa and Toshiro Mifune: The Samurai Sword and the Tiger!!!
GRANDE REGISTA!!! sto cercando il film TRONO DI SANGUE del 1957! da vedere poi intero! comunque grazie x ricordaci dei film a volte dimenticati !!!! ciao e buona giornata da YV:-)))
Interestingly this film didnt receive much credit in Japan, some decided it was only admired because it was "exotic" and more western than most Japanese films. However, its profound influence especially on philosophy and Martin Heidegger in particular is worth studying.
sadly a lot of people do admire it more because its exotic, especialy film fans who often want to take on a guise of being cultured in that easy to check-list kind of way. its not a japanese film, its a film. a good one too.
@gloriaiskenyan No, basically the parties involved all have a motive for telling the story in a certain way; for their would be great shame brought upon each of them if they didn't.
My grandmother saw this in Tokyo in 1950. When I brought it out on DVD the other day, she absolutely lit up. She hadn't seen it in sixty years but remembered how much she enjoyed the film--especially Toshiro Mifune!
Kurosawa, god bless him, was a moralist. This film was (imo) a strong rebuttal against the iconic but very bleak Akutagawa short story of the same name.
I saw this on TV at age 10 and I was inthralled. The light through the trees. The clouds. The various interpretations. The drama. I knew I was watching something unique and brilliant and I never forgot it. It is a haunting movie that lingers in your imagination. He was a genius.
I saw this movie without any knowledge of japanese cinema, or Kurosawa, and I believe it was on TCM... The story was just so superbly made and articulated, and I was truly fascinated by this movie... I have since become a big fan of Japanese cinema, but this movie holds a special place in my soul, and I would love to see it in it's restored glory..
One of the two or three most important movies ever made. The story of human communication in a world where people live next to each other yet in completely different universes. The cynic, the idealist and the simple everyday fallible person. Who holds the hope of mankinds future ? Magnificent as a concept, frightening as a story, technically superb and philosophically unsurpassed. I don't think there are enough stars to rate this movie.
Rashomon is a very thought stimulating movie. It makes us look at the same thing from different angles...it's a timeless piece...a lot other movies copied this idea but never quite came close....
@youtubister I am glad that you find it so important too. Yes the rating is indeed 11/10 and every time I watch it I find new things that make it even more exciting and hair raising. This movie is an incredible achievement and the more I observe the world around us the more I realize that it addresses the very core of the problem. Nobody else has even been close to addressing such an important issue in such a genius way. Incredible !!!
@kbbryson It is not easy of course to name just two or three movies as "best" ever and this is maybe very subjective but in my opinion the other two are "2001 A Space Odyssey" and "Citizen Kane" Of course there are many others with extremely important messages but these three deal with the aspects of human nature in an incredibly astute and complete way which doesn't leave many new things for the other movies to say. I can further discuss this but unfortunately there is not much space here.
@Boudosaved Hi, this is a very good question and even though it is not easy to mention two or three movies as the best or most important ever, I must say that there are some that make it to that category at least as far as dealing with the very core of human existence is concerned. Please check my answer below to @kbbryson where I had answered the same question. I mentioned "2001 A space Odyssey" and "Citizen Kane". I wish we had more space here to discuss about this further.
@tasgeo Well, this is not an easy question to answer. However, if you are into existentialism as expressed through the medium of film, or in particular Japanese film, I recommend the films of Hiroshi Teshigarha. Woman in the Dunes, Pitfall and The Face of Another. You may also delve into films by Andrei Tarkovsky, Ingmar Bergman, Robert Bresson, Michelangelo Antoninoi....(oh I could go on forever, but these are a good start).
@Boudosaved Thank you they sound very interesting. I have seen and I like very much Tarkovsky, Bergman (The Seventh Seal is one of my very favorite movies), Bresson and Antonioni but I did not know about Teshigarha, I will definitely check this out. Yes you are right one could go on forever with the great movies that gave something unique and that is why it is not easy to mention just a few as "the best".
