this is so fucking annoying. why try to put it Asperger's in the show at all if they're not going to try to portray it in a realistic fashion?

I have to disagree with you, this is actually the most realistic portrayal of Asperger's I've seen on a tv show, ever. Too often I've seen tv characters with AS portrayed as just being "super intelligent". They tend to forget about the other aspects such as social discomfort and poor eye contact.

It just seems like they got their information from the DSM and imagined what an AS person would be like from that, instead of actually talking to people with AS. Everyone knows monologuing is a symptom of AS, but it's hard for me to believe that a really smart person who became a successful surgeon, and knew that she had AS, wouldn't have learned to monitor her behavior better than that. And even the way she begins monologuing--it seems tacked-on and not as if it comes from her character.

cont. I feel like portrayals of disabled people can be too much about the disability and not enough about the person, and an aspect of that is assuming that disabled people always have all the symptoms of the disability really badly. When really, a lot of AS people learn to hide or manage their symptoms to some extent.
I'm curious what TV characters you're referring to, I can't think of anyone like that. But I don't watch much TV.
