I really don't believe many people would be able to get close to him. He punches and kicks 5 times faster than his opponent. Not only is he fast, but very unpredictable and distracting. He flinches for ur legs and then punches u in the face and chest before u can recover from the leg fake. No comparison. Watching him train is almost like watching a ballet. Every movement is flowing, precise, and amazing technique. Practicing 1,000 kicks isn't nearly as effective as practicing 1 kick 1,000 times

it is not about hard feelings...but at least Bruce was a promoter, a pioneer and a great Martial Artist.There are many enough martial artists of his time which used to praise his ability's.However, instead quoting Carruthers as real fighter (while the mma's are not) i would pick another JKD guy, Ben Saunders.He even fight in mma and do well, has a good record.

...look at Kimbo Slice (however i would not mention him as a fighter) how he got KO by Petruzelli in few seconds with a punch on 6-7inches distance.And btw, when the surprise element and underestimating wasn't there, he beaten Ray Mercer (you know...that boxer) just because Bas Rutten trained him for a short while.I agree with you to bring someone like Tyson, but not Carutthers, that man fought nowhere.Ron Balick (another JKD and D Innosanto student ) yes, he tried MMA and has a record of 1-1.

why is Tommy Carruthers a fighter?He looks pretty spectacular when he demonstrate to static targets and willing opponents?Did you ever seen him fighting, a record, a full contact sparring, anything?It is childish to think that Carruthers would be able for someone like Vitor Belfort or Mauricio Rua or Igor Vovchanchyn, would be killed.If you talk about that accident with Ray Mercer and Tim Silvia, why dont you talk about the 4 times HW world champ James Toney and Randy Couture?

@vaggoner Jeet Kune Do is not a sport, why are you putting Curruthers in sports competitions? and as far as sports are concerned, the last time James Toney held a significant title in Boxing was 7 years before he fought Couture.

Toney in 2009 still was champion, even now in Februar he defended his title, and any excuse in this sense would works if HE would have been challenged, not vice versa, and if he would have been 47 and Couture 42, not vice versa.

lol First of all, Toney's "title" is not a serious Boxing title. It (IBA) is a title that was once held by Eric Butterbean (if you know who that it is). It is a complete joke.
Second, I said JKD was not designed as a sport, i didn't say that someone could not decide to enter MMA who had some background in JKD (as long as they learn other things, and those two did).

@periechontology There wasn't a prime Toney, i agree, but he wasn't complaining about that when he was willing to fight Couture.If he could be in better shape is just his fault.Boxing fans claimed he will smash Couture before fight, after they suddenly told that Toney was expired.

Without Bruce Lee, there would be no MMA, before Bruce was known, American only have movies with cowboys riding horses with shotgun shooting the indian. When Bruce arrive to American and introduce Martial Arts, people been learning Martial Arts and slowly it turn into a sport and MMA became what it is today.

@DriftKing781 U are right. I think that they might be inspired by the first fight scene of 'Enter the Dragon', of which Bruce beat Sammo Hung (much thinner than today)! By the way, sammo is also another good action movie star in Hong Kong. He has a TV series called 'Martial Law' in US a few years ago and he also learnt the 'Peking Opera' with Jackie CHAN from the same master in Hong Kong. However, 'Peking or Bejing Opera' is a performing art composed of singing, dancing and martial art!

Yip Man may have been an addict, no one is perfect. regardless of his faults, he is a man that influenced many people including one of the greatest fighters of our time, Bruce Lee. He became a grandmaster of a martial art and helped to make it world renowned despite having an addiction. What have you done?

bruce lee learned from great masters. what made him a legend is that he mastered and developed what he learned. he added some of his personal style and philosophy to it and created a new martial arts style.

@dlloyd25 Wong shun leung and ip man taught bruce their kung fu styles. what made bruce a true legend is that he mastered and DEVELOPED those two styles making it his own martial arts style. he taught non-chinese people about his martial arts despite the criticisms the chinese martial arts council in the US not allowing him to teach the new style to non-chinese men and women. he shared his martial arts wisdom to the world contradicting the council. he is a TRUE LEGEND!

@jeisolomon but i think the chinese martial arts council during his time prohibits teaching non-chinese that was why bruce was not accepted at first in the council..he was only then believed when he accepted and won the challenged..

@chamchubby25 Master Kuo Lien Ying and Master Jackman Wong (the guy he "fought") were both teaching non Chinese at the time. That's not what that disagreement was about. Many of his biographers have painted it that way, but all the people involved in that fight won't talk about it publicly and Linda wasn't there. All we know is that after it he disappeared, moved and opened a school several cities away. I don't pretend to know the Truth, but I'm sure it wasn't about teaching non-Chinese.

Bruce Lee is the only real street fighter in the world that have the nerve to challenge all martial arts masters in China. He did say he never fear the challenge because he knows the flaws of the chinese martial arts. It's just too rigid for him. That's why he invented jeet Kun Do that fixed all those flaws so that it is more practical when he got involved in a street fight. No fighter in the world can be compared to him. He is genius, fast, and a killing machine. Legendary!
