62 gr. 5.56 is not made for hunting it was made for enemy soldier of medium build wearing soft body armor and has proven deadly. But now the enemy is so skinny that the round cause a wound like a 22. so you would need to fire three round to stop them. JAG has approved the uses of 5.56 77gr. hollow point which is a man stopper and a hunting round.

Pretty sure the reason why 5.56 is still in service is because of NATO, and because it'd cost too much to switch to 6.8SPC, which is a better round. And if the military ever did switch to 6.8, everyone would buy a 6.8. I'm not downing 5.56, I own 2 myself, but I am saying there's better rounds out there.

I do favor the M855 over the 55gr M193. It just hits harder. I think the 5.56 is fine when used within its parameters, and the user knows its limitations.

.223 for cqb up to 300m and I expect having to repeat into the same target to make sure it doesn't get back up. .308/7.62x51 if I want to be able to shoot once and move on the the next target and put down something beyond 600m. That's the way I see it.

However if you could use .223/5.56x45 HP then that would be a more effective round except for the stupid Hague convention.

The M855 looks great against these targets, but has had numerous issues in the field. The Marine Corps understands this, to an extent, and has partially transitioned to the MK 318 Mod 0, which has better penetration through common battlefield barriers.

I've shot both against real targets, and the MK 318 performs much better, but the 6.8 SPC, 7.62 x 39mm, and 7.62 NATO have much better stopping power and barrier penetration - and will penetrate cinder blocks with single hits.

@ciconcrete I can kill a person with a rock but not efficiently, the 5.56 is not efficient. The whole reason why the military adopted the cartridge was the argument of quantity vs weight. The soldiers in vietnam could carry twice as much 5.56 as .308 or .30-06, however they soon realized that even though they carried twice as many rounds, it took twice as many to kill an enemy soldier. Many MANY us soldiers threw down their M16's for some good ole ak's and sks's.

Wrong, The differences between .223 Rem and 5.56 (NATO) are that .223 Rem is loaded to lower pressures and velocities compared to 5.56 NATO and the 5.56 NATO chamber has a longer lead. .223 Rem ammunition can be safely fired in a 5.56 NATO chambered gun, but the reverse can be an unsafe combination. The additional pressure created by 5.56 NATO ammo will frequently cause over-pressure problems and can destroy the barrel. Penetrator aren't armor piercing. But, .223 is not a combat round!!!!!!!

The only issue with the M855 is that it is such a hard and fast round that the skinny's are just to skinny and most of the rounds just pass straight through unless they hit a hard surface such as bone or ???. Field cases show that the multiple target hits are required to drop the target. But I do like the video

@woodlandcammo27 The 'Green Tip' 5.56 is the SS109/M855 round. It is a 62gr bullet with a steel 'penetrator' core designed punch through armored human targets. The reason for the green tip on it is so that the military does not confuse the SS109/M855 round with the M193. The M193 is a 55gr bullet and was the standard round used in older M16's with 1:12 barrel twists. The SS109/M855 will not stabilize properly in a 1:12 twist, so the green tip is to say don't put me in 1:12 barrels!

@OMEGA2669 - My SIG 556 has a 1:7 twist, I have both M193 (Centurion Arms) which fires great from the rifle, the nice thing with the heavy piston of the SIG is that it allows me to jump up to a 62gr M855 as well. I'm pretty much stocking the M855, but I should run a few mags through it to see what adjustments I should make to the ACOG when running the two. Good point on the 1:12 twist, just doesn't get enough spin for the greens.

@MrSchmallz Had to do that as part of the base rifle team when I served in the Marine Corps. This was the key to get to Camp Perry. During normal qulification shooting I never missed a bull @ 500yds. Most Marines consider distance shooting the gravy because prone is the most stable shooting position. At 600+ the keys are solid battle sight zeroing, a good spotter. and consistant trigger pull timing. 20/5 vision in my shooting eye kinda helped a bit also.
