The .223 round is loaded to 55,000 PSI while the 5.56Nato is loaded to 58,000 PSI. Don't seem like much but shooting a 5.56Nato in a 223 chamber will bring pressures up as high as 65,000PSI or even higher.
There's too much controversy on the 5.56's stopping power. All the military needs to do is standardize 77 grain mk242s instead of the 62 grain green tips
62 gr. 5.56 is not made for hunting it was made for enemy soldier of medium build wearing soft body armor and has proven deadly. But now the enemy is so skinny that the round cause a wound like a 22. so you would need to fire three round to stop them. JAG has approved the uses of 5.56 77gr. hollow point which is a man stopper and a hunting round.
That was a great video, thanks...Looks to me that if you shoot an enemy at 100 yards it's gonna do the job pretty good...I chose the Saiga 223 over 7.62 & 5.45 because availability of ammo, the green tip, and accuracy at high rate of fire...
Pretty sure the reason why 5.56 is still in service is because of NATO, and because it'd cost too much to switch to 6.8SPC, which is a better round. And if the military ever did switch to 6.8, everyone would buy a 6.8. I'm not downing 5.56, I own 2 myself, but I am saying there's better rounds out there.
I do favor the M855 over the 55gr M193. It just hits harder. I think the 5.56 is fine when used within its parameters, and the user knows its limitations.
.223 for cqb up to 300m and I expect having to repeat into the same target to make sure it doesn't get back up. .308/7.62x51 if I want to be able to shoot once and move on the the next target and put down something beyond 600m. That's the way I see it.
However if you could use .223/5.56x45 HP then that would be a more effective round except for the stupid Hague convention.
The M855 looks great against these targets, but has had numerous issues in the field. The Marine Corps understands this, to an extent, and has partially transitioned to the MK 318 Mod 0, which has better penetration through common battlefield barriers.
I've shot both against real targets, and the MK 318 performs much better, but the 6.8 SPC, 7.62 x 39mm, and 7.62 NATO have much better stopping power and barrier penetration - and will penetrate cinder blocks with single hits.
people need to drop that whole case of 5.56 is a pussy non stopping round. If it was it wouldnt have been used in every single branch of US military fr as long as it has. Also if it was no good just try asking the million or so dead guys that got hit by this "pussy" round
@ciconcrete I can kill a person with a rock but not efficiently, the 5.56 is not efficient. The whole reason why the military adopted the cartridge was the argument of quantity vs weight. The soldiers in vietnam could carry twice as much 5.56 as .308 or .30-06, however they soon realized that even though they carried twice as many rounds, it took twice as many to kill an enemy soldier. Many MANY us soldiers threw down their M16's for some good ole ak's and sks's.
Im not saying 5.56 is the best, of course 308 would be better. Im just saying that 5.56 will kill a person very easy with one shot. If the military was allowed to use hunting rounds then they would be alot more deadly with the 556. The m855 isnt all that great, it actually kinda sucks but it will still kill people. The 55 grain they used in nam was much better
@ciconcrete why was the 55 grain better? they still use the 55 grain and some 65 grain. What are you calling a "hunting" round? Soft point, hollow point? Just so you know, the special forces guys etc. dont always follow the geneva convention, they DO use hollow points, and they sometimes convert their fmj's to mushroom out on impact. This is of course when they arent using the .22's lol

who ever says that round has no stopping power is high that would knock any human down in a single shot but do that you would have to use a 20 in barrel no pussy 14 inch barrel america you picked a good round
also of the massive kinect energy didn't blow your insides apart the round tumbling and tearing its way out would make you bleed out and die rapidly from massive would channel and missing tissue
@Pill88Dickle dude .223 and 5.56 are two different bullets bro. like .38 special and .357 mag mos people dont know but that green tip is armor piercing steel penitrator the bullet is bigger and powder is hotter in 5.56
@thegatman22 This is the second video I've found you spouting off the same misinformation, 556 and 223 are the same other than the possible maximum overall chamber preasure in the 556 due to thicker case walls. And what do you mean the bullet is bigger? They are the same diameter! If you mean weight both catridges can shoot identical weight bullets too!! OH and the green tip is a penetrator not armor piercing! The M995 "Black Tip" is armor piercing!!
Wrong, The differences between .223 Rem and 5.56 (NATO) are that .223 Rem is loaded to lower pressures and velocities compared to 5.56 NATO and the 5.56 NATO chamber has a longer lead. .223 Rem ammunition can be safely fired in a 5.56 NATO chambered gun, but the reverse can be an unsafe combination. The additional pressure created by 5.56 NATO ammo will frequently cause over-pressure problems and can destroy the barrel. Penetrator aren't armor piercing. But, .223 is not a combat round!!!!!!!

I don't like the law same as you. but its there. cheap ammo isnt worth losing rights over to me.

I suggest you take this vid off the net. since the production of the carbo 15 and other AR pistols is ammo is illegal according to federal definition.
ARMOR-PIERCING AMMUNITION
By federal definition, "a projectile or projectile core which may be used in a handgun and which is constructed entirely from one or a combination of tungsten alloys, steel, iron, brass, bronze, beryllium copper, or depleted uranium. Such term does not include shotgun shot.
A tad exaggerated 'cause a milk jug doesn't mimic skin or tissues too well, but it gets the point across, the 5.56 is no .22 lr. Oh, and for those who say 5.56 is a varmint -only round, you're half-right, 'cause humans are large varmint sized game, like coyotes. =D I wish someone would make a super-light ball ammo for a 7.62 to put to rest the idea that the 5.56 is unique in it's performance, it's just the style, construction, and velocity. Any round can relate with proper design.
now try this test with some commie made steel core 7.62X39 (I'm tired of hearing what a good round it is when its a proven fact that 5.56N does more damage).
@Tuxedo413 20 inch, so the bullet is impacting around 3000fps at 100 yards, enough velocity to cause fragmentation effects. I think I need an MSAR E4 in a 20" barrel
I don't own a .223 but it looks like the round did it's job damn well in this video. If that was a human being getting shot, he would be dead on the spot and wouldn't be around to bad-mouth the stopping power of a 5.56 round.
The only issue with the M855 is that it is such a hard and fast round that the skinny's are just to skinny and most of the rounds just pass straight through unless they hit a hard surface such as bone or ???. Field cases show that the multiple target hits are required to drop the target. But I do like the video
I have some pictures in my photobucket account of ballistic gel that M855A1 was fired into. One is through steel and the other is through a windshield. Anyone that is interested send me a personal message so I can send you the links. I'd post them here if I could be youtube doesn't allow that anymore.
Excellent Video Man, Really appreciate it! i'm impressed. Would be nice to see a comparison video of 7.62x51 ball (non-steel core)...... maybe i'll do that vid hahaha
every body is so concerned with type of ammo. Well I bet if I shoot someone with cheap tula ammo they will fall or run in alot of pain as much as if I shoot them with a 1.00 round. I have some of each, TAP and cheap wolf ammo. What I'm saying is I want to see someone still come at me after I shoot them anywhere with any ammo. LOL If I shoot a cheap bullet thru your leg or arm or into your gut and your still coming at me at just put 29 more in you. If your still coming I'm running any ways!!!
lol. .223 is a friggin scary meat cleaver if properly deployed. ( 18" bbl or longer - 200 yards or less)
this relatively recent craze for short carbine barrels has given the .223 a bad name - if it hits going fast enough to yaw and frag at the cannalure - .223 does the job *quite* well.
armchair commandos are the same crowd that say the 9mm isn't potent enough to be a reliable man stopper . with the right load, it too can be pretty deadly
@evilsnuffalupagus I don't think its that anyone thinks the .223 or 9mm wont stop somebody and do it most every time. Its just there are better rounds suited to stopping people and that's a fact. If your life is gonna rest on that split second, go big or go home.
@MegaGewehr1 ur a fucking idiot the .223 round is more then capable of killing a human ive even hunted deer with a .223 so stop playing video games and grow up
MY conclusion...DONT EVER GET SHOT WITH A 5.56MM within ANY KNOWN DISTANCE THEY CAN HIT YOU AT,the terminal ballistics simply demonstrate the nasty body splaterfacation of a high velocity round in the center of mass of a human target. Note;" splaterfacation" is a highly technical term, dont use it lightly.
@woodlandcammo27 The 'Green Tip' 5.56 is the SS109/M855 round. It is a 62gr bullet with a steel 'penetrator' core designed punch through armored human targets. The reason for the green tip on it is so that the military does not confuse the SS109/M855 round with the M193. The M193 is a 55gr bullet and was the standard round used in older M16's with 1:12 barrel twists. The SS109/M855 will not stabilize properly in a 1:12 twist, so the green tip is to say don't put me in 1:12 barrels!
@OMEGA2669 - My SIG 556 has a 1:7 twist, I have both M193 (Centurion Arms) which fires great from the rifle, the nice thing with the heavy piston of the SIG is that it allows me to jump up to a 62gr M855 as well. I'm pretty much stocking the M855, but I should run a few mags through it to see what adjustments I should make to the ACOG when running the two. Good point on the 1:12 twist, just doesn't get enough spin for the greens.
@SoCalCulated1999 I also own a 556, and it will put a 62gr m855 through 1/4" plate steel @ 500 meters! 55gr FMJ rounds tend to fly away at long range, but those heavier rounds shoot great with that 1:7 twist
@Robbob993 You show me a person who can consistently hit bullseyes in open sights @ 600 yards (0.34 miles) and i'll buy him dinner. With a 1 in 7 twist, heavier rounds (especially 75+ grains) are more stable after they leave shorter barrels. This is not really a topic of debate. It's just simply true.
@MrSchmallz Had to do that as part of the base rifle team when I served in the Marine Corps. This was the key to get to Camp Perry. During normal qulification shooting I never missed a bull @ 500yds. Most Marines consider distance shooting the gravy because prone is the most stable shooting position. At 600+ the keys are solid battle sight zeroing, a good spotter. and consistant trigger pull timing. 20/5 vision in my shooting eye kinda helped a bit also.
@SoCalCulated1999 If the rifle can fire the M193 there is nothing special that makes it capable of firing M855 or anyother round produced for the M16.
What red dot sight are you using?

I caught a chunk of copper jacket ricochet from a .40 cal pistol round in the face at the range once. hurt a little.
could consider that a wound... in fact - technically I got shot in the head... No?
this is why they make you wear eye protection - shit happens :)

The only issue with the M855 is that it is such a hard and fast round that the skinny's are just to skinny and most of the rounds just pass straight through unless they hit a hard surface such as bone or ???. Field cases show that the multiple target hits are required to drop the target. But I do like the video
oced9339 1 year ago
@oced9339 even those with a heaver round shoot more then one shot at there threat... bottom line is 5.56 works and works good :)

How effective are these at penetrating a human temple?... Just out of curiosity.
alexsell187 1 year ago
@alexsell187
you are joking right?
5.56 nato will penetrate a human head well out beyond half a mile (providing you have the skill to make the shot)
in fact it'll penetrate an 80's era military steel helmet go through a human head, and come out the other side of the helmet at 300 yards.
evilsnuffalupagus 11 months ago
people say what they want about the 5.56 round,,,but i dont know many people who are willing to take a round through the chest or dome..do you??..lol

I have some pictures in my photobucket account of ballistic gel that M855A1 was fired into. One is through steel and the other is through a windshield. Anyone that is interested send me a personal message so I can send you the links. I'd post them here if I could be youtube doesn't allow that anymore.

@RGM79GM1 For anyone that doesn't know M855A1 is what replaced the M855 in this video for the US Army.

Excellent Video Man, Really appreciate it! i'm impressed. Would be nice to see a comparison video of 7.62x51 ball (non-steel core)...... maybe i'll do that vid hahaha

Damn think you can do one at 300 yards for a 5.56?
GUNS4MIKE1234 1 year ago
@grappler3x please do this with the mighty 7.62 NATO green ball, this would be a great comparison.

every body is so concerned with type of ammo.

@tdcmf i bought this exact ammo 2 days ago for 35 cent a roumd. not that expensive.

So, did this test finally prove to you that 5.56 is a pussy round suitable only for varmints? lol

@MegaGewehr1 From the looks of it, yes. It is. If varmints are hiding behind steel I beams. Ha ha

5.56 is a proven round and priced right.
RayAir1 1 year ago
@MegaGewehr1 yeah right the 5.56 is a great and effective round for the ar platform. The round is made to fragment and tumble.
bcss10 1 year ago
@MegaGewehr1
lol. .223 is a friggin scary meat cleaver if properly deployed. ( 18" bbl or longer - 200 yards or less)
this relatively recent craze for short carbine barrels has given the .223 a bad name - if it hits going fast enough to yaw and frag at the cannalure - .223 does the job *quite* well.
armchair commandos are the same crowd that say the 9mm isn't potent enough to be a reliable man stopper . with the right load, it too can be pretty deadly
evilsnuffalupagus 11 months ago
@evilsnuffalupagus I don't think its that anyone thinks the .223 or 9mm wont stop somebody and do it most every time. Its just there are better rounds suited to stopping people and that's a fact. If your life is gonna rest on that split second, go big or go home.

Note;" splaterfacation" is a highly technical term, dont use it lightly.
great video..MORE SPLATERFACATION...PLEASE!!!!

Man, this is how you make a cool video!
slimjim77M 1 year ago
That was a cool test. I think you would get more devistation with 7.62 x 39. What does the green tip do?
woodlandcammo27 1 year ago
@woodlandcammo27 The 'Green Tip' 5.56 is the SS109/M855 round. It is a 62gr bullet with a steel 'penetrator' core designed punch through armored human targets. The reason for the green tip on it is so that the military does not confuse the SS109/M855 round with the M193. The M193 is a 55gr bullet and was the standard round used in older M16's with 1:12 barrel twists. The SS109/M855 will not stabilize properly in a 1:12 twist, so the green tip is to say don't put me in 1:12 barrels!
OMEGA2669 1 year ago
@OMEGA2669 - My SIG 556 has a 1:7 twist, I have both M193 (Centurion Arms) which fires great from the rifle, the nice thing with the heavy piston of the SIG is that it allows me to jump up to a 62gr M855 as well. I'm pretty much stocking the M855, but I should run a few mags through it to see what adjustments I should make to the ACOG when running the two. Good point on the 1:12 twist, just doesn't get enough spin for the greens.
SoCalCulated1999 1 year ago
@SoCalCulated1999 I also own a 556, and it will put a 62gr m855 through 1/4" plate steel @ 500 meters! 55gr FMJ rounds tend to fly away at long range, but those heavier rounds shoot great with that 1:7 twist
MrSchmallz 1 year ago
@MrSchmallz The M193 does not "fly away" at long range. A trained shooter can easily hit bullseyes at 600 yards without optics.
Robbob9933 1 year ago
@Robbob993 You show me a person who can consistently hit bullseyes in open sights @ 600 yards (0.34 miles) and i'll buy him dinner. With a 1 in 7 twist, heavier rounds (especially 75+ grains) are more stable after they leave shorter barrels. This is not really a topic of debate. It's just simply true.
MrSchmallz 1 year ago
@MrSchmallz Had to do that as part of the base rifle team when I served in the Marine Corps. This was the key to get to Camp Perry. During normal qulification shooting I never missed a bull @ 500yds. Most Marines consider distance shooting the gravy because prone is the most stable shooting position. At 600+ the keys are solid battle sight zeroing, a good spotter. and consistant trigger pull timing. 20/5 vision in my shooting eye kinda helped a bit also.
Robbob9933 1 year ago
@SoCalCulated1999 If the rifle can fire the M193 there is nothing special that makes it capable of firing M855 or anyother round produced for the M16.
