  • It looked like an ole cabin-over, nice shifts. I had an ole 69 Pete with a 4 and 4 in it 318 leak-troit. It ran good till I blew the left front steer, on and ole two lane road with the trees next to the white line and wrapped it around an ole pine tree. Thanks to the good Lord I am here today.

  • My Dad used to have a Ford 800 with 5X4 but that was before I was driving. Oldest brother loved it (I think trucks are in his blood). He would use different shift patterns whenever the uncles were with and mess with their heads. I've driven 5x2 and regular modern semi transmissions but have not yet tackled the 5x4.

  • The thing people don't explain is that shifting a 5X4 is not just moving the sticks of the transmissions at the correct time for each shift. You MUST LISTEN to the engine with significant concentration (at first) for the differences between the ratios of all the gear combinations and where the engine rpm has to be for the combination you are going to next. These differences also increase continuously as the ground speed of the truck increases. No LISTENING = No go.

  • Brother I would not want to DEAL with that everyday. Shifting one stick, then another stick...I admire anybody who could handle that on a daily basics and especially in traiffic. Bless you brother driver. Who in the world made this truck and transmission? He should have been horse whip for designing this....Ha!

  • The good old days???

  • It's not hard at all, you use one hand when only using the aux trans to go up thru the gears, then you use two hands when both have to be be shifted, and it's done instantly ... one goes down the other goes up .... and it's easy as can be. You just know when it all fits proper and there is no hesitation. Now downshifting is a different matter - rpm has to be exact and both hands have to move at once .... and again - it just fits. That's the difference between the video and a professional ....

  • @cq92larry all i can say if any one follows these instructions you are going to get someone killed and i learned from old timers that hauled logs for 30+ years and nobody 2 sticks upshifting and most of the time its not worth it down shifting un less you know you pull the hill in that split!! but then again maybe you could make a demonstration video of your professional two stick shifting say going down grade and see howgood it works out for you!!! All I see you driving is an accordian!!

  • @TheFreightlinerfever Actually, you are entirely right - there was no sense commenting at all... I have only been driving since about 1978 - and a couple years before that before I got a license off road working for a neighbor - the first was an old Mack B Model and then a White Mustang that still had big old 6 cyl gas engines - the Mack had a Triplex - have you ever even seen these kinds of trucks ? Probably not.

  • @cq92larry Well as that freightliner is owned by me and my first truck I owned was a 65 narrow nose KW with a 335 and a 4X4 and i have driven a LJ mack with a duplex and a 3 speed brownie I would say ihave seen these kind of trucks!! And in this video I was driving it home the day I bought it and had about 10 miles in it at the time!!My son has a video of it hauling logs on here!!

  • @cq92larry Also a mack quadraplex or a triplex is a lot more forgiving on showing off by shifting up with both sticks as it is not TWO separate transmissions just an aux. section!!

  • @TheFreightlinerfever In the 30 years since then I have seen nearly every US state, been across the US several times, also across Canada several times and north as far as the road goes. I've hauled nearly every thing possible and driven any kind of truck that had wheels - including the old Pacific and Marmon, right up to the latest brand new Peterbilt and Freightliner automatic.

  • @TheFreightlinerfever I've also run a 1971 KW with a 270 CAT and WITHOUT a jake in 1989 thru the mountains in BC - which you probably never have even seen yet - it's 11 3/4 hours from Calgary to Vancouver - let me tell you the two stick and downgrades all work just fine .... I counted once - you shift gears about 800 times there and back.... it's 650 miles... you just have to know what you are doing - which you apparently do not.

  • @cq92larry as far as me not knowing what I'm doing I spent several years hauling logs including coming of 12-14 grades in the snow run a chip truck thru the hills to day going over the cascades in the winter in a hay truck and the proper way to come of a hill is without using your brakes so yes I do know what I'm doing!! And It sounds like you do also so I will apologize for the accordian remark ! But Like I said I had only driven this truck for about 10 miles when my son took this video!!

  • @TheFreightlinerfever You also have to know how to come down the hill at a normal decent speed without smoking your brakes, and probably that little trick is something you do not know either. I also took that same old truck to Texas and back quite a few times. I see you probably did a lookup - and see me with an accordion, I also play a fiddle too - I could care less about trucking these days - pretty much had my share of certain folk and I play music for a hobby, I enjoy life a whole lot more.

  • @TheFreightlinerfever I was a heavy duty mechanic for some time and also have owned several trucks over the years as well as different businesses.

Now to take you up on your offer - just bring your truck up to Canada any time you like and bring a video camera - plus maybe you can put some money where your mouth is too :) I'd enjoy that immensely .... no problem at all ! It might be very educational to you.

  • @TheFreightlinerfever I'm not about to go find a truck to make a movie just to prove something I know quite well to someone that doesn't..... It might also cross your mind if you stopped to think - 10+ years ago, when these old trucks were more common and I drove them for a living, there was no internet, no or very few cellphones and no handy portable cheap movie cameras.... But I do have books full of old certificates, and boxes full of regular paper pictures...

  • @TheFreightlinerfever And last but not least ..... have you ever wondered exactly why the throttle and brake pedals are both flat and also the same height on all trucks built - old to new and exactly why that might be ? There is a very good practical reason for that. Let me know if you ever figure out the correct answer.... it has somethign to do with "grade"

  • @TheFreightlinerfever

Here U go - I actually found a video of someone a bit rough around the edges - but doing it all the proper way. Enjoy !

    youtube.com/watch?v=w-ffkS37miQ

  • Has he ever thought of using two hands ? And doing it properly ? Plus not "feeling" for the gears ? It would be so much more interesting if he did it very neat - properly and professionally instead of like some form of amateur that has never driven before .... the shifts should be all very crisp clean and using both hands is an asset - that is how it should be done and is done .....

  • @cq92larry Just for the record we were driving truck home from where we bought it so i had about 10 miles behind the wheel of this truck!

  • Damn hella nice wish I could do that. Just seems like a pain

  • i drove an 89 model international that had the 5x4..i loved it..20 forward and 4 reverse.

  • Thinking this would be a shit show for me. Have to slam on the brakes and then then try and find 2 gears at the same time. lol

  • I was lost within the first 3 seconds.

  • Good ole days!!!

  • how in the world does a guy learn how to drive one of these?

  • now THAT is working, in an old truck. Yuu really have to bust your ass trying to make it do what you want. New trucks are all automatic transmission, or easier to shift. Well here in europe that is.

  • bad ass shifting I lost track after 2nd!

  • That's a REAL driver right there

  • i really want to drive those type of gearbox.

i always drive ordinary synchronized gearbox, its a bit boooring ;)

  • I have to drive a 1966 mackdm800 dump truck like this...Freaking horror show....Truck looks fairly new wish I could put vids up....Still on the road today hauling 20 tons of asphalt. Something like this is for total control of a truck, not like a scary automatic plowing down the road....And one of the lowest gears ever

  • That shit doesn't work smoothly !!!

  • why do older trucks have an aux. transmission?

  • @mrfirecrotch100 they didn't have the 13 speed until late 60s. So before they came out with 13 speed, they used aux transmissions. Still used them in oil field rigs, but mostly in the setup of a 18+4

  • @Hotrodx199 I thought the 13 came out in the mid fifties or before. The 1955 Peterbilt 281 with tag axle in the movie Duel had a 13 speed 3 position splitter in it. I know the survivor truck has a 5x3 but the truck in the movie the original one that went over the cliff had a 13 speed in it. I know they added the tag axle but I can't see they changed the original transmission in the truck as well.

  • @Hotrodx199 the best set up for the oil field we ever used was a 9 speed main(twin counter shaft) and a 1241 c ( deep under) auxiliary..did better than any thing else...ran a power tower off the top of the 1241 to the main winch, bottom mount pto to winch#2, side mount pto on 1241 to winch #3, side mount pto on the side of the 9 speed to winch #4.. was a maze of drive shafts but one helluva work truck..".oilfiled trucking" ..the toughest job you'll ever love to hate.....RR

  • seem kind of difficult to shift, european transmissions offers easier gear shifting, sorry no offense

  • @goodyearLLC well this truck is probably 50 years old, things are a lot different now.

  • I love how he doesnt give a fuck fastening his seatbelt because that beast is so badass that it would simply destroy anything in the face of Earth

  • @Doggfair it's likely the truck didn't come with seatbelts.... hell I was driving trucks in the 70's and 80's that didn't have belts.

  • How does this work? Does one transmission feed the other, and from the second box go to the driveshaft? Or does the second lever change the final drive in the diff?

  • what kind of truck is that?

  • What a score for $1500! The 250 with the 5X4...but the icing on the cake is the Wagner-Sangamo Speedograph and Tachograph! Are they hooked up? CLASSIC!

  • @54autocar The tach is yes, the speedo works as soon as we get a cable for it, then its good as new.

  • Is that a "Double Overdrive" compound?, maybe that is why you are having so much trouble with the main box to first gear in the compound shifts, first speed in the compound is an "underdrive" in the "double over" compound transmissions .

the ratios are 1 (underdrive), 2 (direct), 3 (1st overdrive), 4 (2nd overdrive), if 5th gear in the trans (main box) is "Direct" ratio 1:1, then many 4 speed auxiliary trans used the double overdrive ratios.

  • @axylotyl001 Main box is direct, brownie is a progressive brownie i think. single overdrive unit.

  • you make it look easy i drove 1 i had to use both hands on the shifters and my elbo for steering 5 n 4s are so much fun when u add hills corners traffic and then dispatch gets on the radio wondering where yo are and they whant to know now lol

  • shhhh - better keep quiet, I own a Toyoda 'Pious' too! ;)

  • @ChuffChuffWoo Do you have it as a warning example :)

  • @felixchaus Actually its because I cant afford a Dodge Charger!! :-))

  • Takes a true big dick country boy to shift them gears like that... Hats off to you my friend!

  • I dont understand! =(

PLEASE! I want to learn how to do it... is the same transmission than the r600 ?

  • @QuintyPurple I have no idea how the r600 transmission work or what they even use

  • @Hotrodx199 Its like a regular 5 speed wit a ultra low split a low split a high split and a direct....Im more familiar with the triplex transmission but its similar to this one

  • @QuintyPurple its simple..... there are 5 speeds like a car or pickup. each of those gears has 4 gears of its own, they are shifting second through 4th each time the main transmission changes gears,so....on the regular 5 speed, when they go from, say 3 to 4th they will run the 2nd thru 4th on the 3rd gear of then main, then switch the main to 4th and start the sub trainsmission in 2nd then get to the the 4th sub gear

  • anyone here of doing a 5 and 4 to lets say a 13 spd tranny conversion?

  • Funny thing about TedLeoAgent's comments is, I went to college. I used to work in a cubicle like all the other drones, withering under fluorescent lights, having to make sure to kiss the corporate ass just enough to keep my job but not enough to be seen as blatant about it. Now I have a corner office with a view. Oh, and I make more money now than I did then. I pick when/where to have lunch, when to take a break, etc. So, who's the retard?

  • That's it! Hell that's enough

  • LOL...too funny. I heard a lot about these transmissions but never actually got to see one in action. Looks like fun.

  • Is the 4 gear box gears in U- model, not H-model? So 3rd gear back and 4rd on front? I have drived 9 gear Eaton Fuller where was 3rd and 4rd othervise than normal H. Was faster and simpler to use when first learn other places of gears. So about half working day to learn.

  • I'm confused.

  • is this sad? im 18 years old and the hay truck i drove was a 70's KW W900a with a 8v92 (replaced the 8v71) and it had a 5 and a 4. I drove it all summer. this is like 2nd nature to me lol

  • @Dodgeram901 , not sad im trying it in an erf , here in the uk im 25 i been doing it a few week and im getting ther still grind them a bit , im used to 18 speed splicer thats easy , respect to you man

  • @britdemo well thank you, good luck! its very fun after you get the hang of it

  • Lesse some of TODAY's drivers drive THIS! [evil grin and villianous laugh]

  • lol how do you remember the gear

  • Ahhh, look at that flat dash children. These can be polished out to the point that you have to wear your Ray-Bans at night. Nice '65. Thought I'd never hear a '250 run again. Too many memories. Went from a COE with a 250 to a High mount KW with a two-six bits in it. Thought I was in tall cotton till the 335's came out. My old '66 Freight box was just put out to pasture six monthes ago, after the smog regs took over. Was a good yard truck, and that dash still had a shine to it.

  • so how would you go through all 20 gears?

  • You split all your gears. For each main tranmission shift, you shift the auxilary transmission 4 times. So if you go into 1st, you shift the auxilary transmission 4 times, go into 2nd and repeat the process.

  • ok so in the video you are doing it different?

    so i would shift 1-1 1-2 1-3 1-4 then 2-1 2-2 2-3 ext?

and how do you float the gears when changing full gears and splitting back to 1?

  • we just went from 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and then started splitting the gears.

when you are going from like 3 to 4th for example, you shift the main trans into 4th and then move the auxilary trans back into 1st or 2nd. Gotta be quick!

  • ok now i get it thanks man

hey can you make a video going trhough all 20 gears?

    1-1 to 5-4?

    that would be cool'

i have driven a 5-2 before and its not seeming all that complicating lol

  • I probably could next time we drive this thing... So far we had it for little over a year and we hadn't put 100 miles on it lol.

  • that is amazing how many miles total?

and are you by any chance thinking about selling it?

  • after watching this video make me miss the 6x4 I learned on it was hooked to a 3406b cat in in freightliner hood

  • reminds me of shifting a bicycle...in the most remote way

  • Now that you mention it I split shift my mountain bike 3x7 lol

  • i know 10 speed direct, 15, 18, 13, 9 but damn when i saw this i got a little confused about the shifting haha...wow..

  • exactly. My Dad has been a truck driver for over 33 years. And I'm proud to have a dad like that

  • where is the first gear??

  • clear over to the left and up not needed except for extreme upgrade take off or really heavy load with 5.29 rears

  • Really? I'm not ashamed of my heartbeating father just because he drives 10 hours a day and comes home every night and stays for the weekend. What more shit do you have to say? You can't win.

  • i'm 19 and i look forward to a career in truck driving

  • not for nothing there retard but the next time you sit down to take a shit and you look over at the roll of toilet paper you use to wipe your dumbass just remember a truck driver brought it there and without us truckin retards you would have to clean the shit from your dumb ass with your finger! oh yeah we brought the toilet too! what an ignorant ass! without us you would be living under a bridge somewhere sucking on your thumb with not a damn thing!

  • @TedLeoAgent Your mother lies on her back for foodstamps and your old man gets on his knees for a hit. You are making negative comments on this site because you have no self confidence and ripping on people who you know nothing about satiates that hunger.I think it was probaly a late night sneaky uncle. I have more of an education then u will ever earn and Ive done more for my country than you ever will.A career? HMMM, sucking a corporate pimps cock everyday hoping for a promo?no way.

  • @TedLeoAgent then what the fuck are ya doin lookin up this vid troll!?

  • Somebody take a truck and run over the dumb FUCK TedLeoAgent.

  • Well i better put mufflers back on so he cant hear me coming after him!

  • Comment removed

  • ok shit for brains that computer you spewing off on came by truck, the phone you talk on did also, and the food you eat too and thats just some of it, your probably to scared to drive a truck anyway

  • Retarded emo shitbags like you ARE THE SCUM OF THE EARTH. You contribute to nothing and you know nothing about trucking what so ever and fail to make a point about trucking. If you want friends why don't you tell an Obama joke? LOL

  • And it's not my fault that your daddy whacked off in a flower pot and that you became a dickweed!

  • Listen here you dumb fucking bastard . i spent over 1 million miles behind the wheel of trucks and guess what u fucking BRAINLESS RETARD THE ONLY THING NOT HAULED BY TRUCK IS SUNSHINE . IGNORANT BASTARD

  • Hodrodx is right, EMO SCUM LIKE U ARE THE SCUM OF THE EARTH. i recon u are jealous cause we have a life unlike u, so u gotta try and make fun of us truckies.....fuck off back to ur mums whoom and dont come out....ever!

  • nothing like good old fashion truck driving I love my run and my mack ultra liner

  • Nice suspension seat. Wish I have one of those in Samurai.

  • Crazy transmission.

  • TedLeoAgent is a well-fare bum and is jealous that not even he can get a decent job .. get a life you useless prick . you're nothing but a waste of space and life yourself. your mother shoulda swallowed you rather than let your dad stay the extra few seconds in her you piece of shit

  • I would rather work shitty hours and work shitty conditions driving one of these then sit in a suit and tie. what kind of life is that? By the way, how did you get everything in your home? Most likely a truker delivered it, so shut the fuck up.

  • You fail at life, go get one.

  • Is this ur truck, and can u show us this truck outside?pls

  • Sure there is plenty videos of it. It's the white and yellow 65 freightliner.

  • Do I need to clutch when I shift the 4-speed brownie?

  • Call trucking a shitty job but let me just remind you sir, 95% of everything you touch has been in a truck trailer. Also, might I add that only about 10% of real men care if you go to college. Real men work, not act like a bitch pushing pencils and riding a desk. Grow a pair and man up, boy.

  • You are probably the most ignorant bullshit i heard of.

  • you a a complete f******* moron you are probably majoring in political science or some other liberal bullshit and going to school on public money like the welfare reject i'm sure you are

  • what rpm do u shift? 2100?

  • I think around 1900-2000. Probably almost around 2100.

  • now i see that i understand what they doing shifting with twins, now I get it, thanks for show this video :-D

  • thats when drivers were drivers bet they were glad when the air low/hi came about

  • Sit back and relax then girl, leave the driving for the men.

  • yes ur raight go truking somone better and new..man..leave this shit

  • nice truck! looks like fun to drive

  • is that a c/o diamond reo ? can you put up pics of truck please cjtllc

  • Which gearboxes made up the tandem on the truck this video? The secondary's pattern looked consistent with the Spicer AMO/ATO1750-4C; the primary could be any of a number of dual countershaft models (e.g., the Eaton Fuller T- or TX-12505, or the Spicer PS110-5).

  • 8052 main 8341c aux

  • find em and grind em

  • floating

  • My Uncle used to drive 5*4 Mack B51s cement tractor trailers for Dufferin Concrete in Toronto...Love it..

  • God.....I remember 5/4's.

    Nice Vid.

  • this mans a real driver. full respect.

  • i agree wholeheartedly

  • we used to have a '66 Autocar 10-wheel dump truck with a 230 non-turbo cummins, and a tri-plex tranny....many many many times I'd have to stop and start over....great video

  • Yeah that's the downside, but once you get the routine down it's fun! Unlike Mack quad boxes, they don't use linkages, it's all integrated so it makes shifting easy and nice.

  • Cut my teeth in a 71 Pete with twin sticks. Had to pull to the shoulder and start over a couple times, but when you get it down its fun as hell! Cool video, brings back some memories.

  • My aux trans linkage gets bound up if I dont pay attention. Old school at its best

  • That's the downside of aux trannys, they tend to get stuck if you don't shift it right.

  • yea , but I'd never get rid of it,,long live the twin stick

  • wats the pattern

  • 124

     45R 14 23

  • 124

    45R

    14

    23

    ??? Shouldn't one 4 be 3?

  • yes 124 35R

  • I sure loved those twin-sticks.

Only downside was the occasional linkage binding and lock up. 1965 Pete butterfly w/318 Detroit & 5/4 For a beater that was one great truck. Loud as all get out.

As I recall, when empty I recall starting off in 3rd or 4th and skip a lot of those auxillary holes.

It's been 11 years since I drove it.

Armstrong steering and no brakes on front axle and phone booth style interior and the air horn was right by your ear. LOL.

  • to any one that can drive a farm tractor they can drive these one shifter is the man box and the other is your splitter the newer trucks have the lil button on the side for that now

  • Man thats great..

Is the blue stick for the High-Low group??

  • The blue stick is the main box, the one with the black knob is for splitting in between gears.

  • What is the truck, hotrod?

  • It says in the description but it's a 1965 White freightliner wft cabover.

  • Great Job, Nice old truck.

  • Thank you.

  • Reminds me of "Big Red," one of Parker Ranch's rigs...a Pete Cab Over 2-sticker,

loved whenever my Daddy would let me drive her around in the pastures & back roads. I

still drive 2-stickers, companies here in the Islands don't throw trucks away...mahalo for the vid HotRod, Aloha WIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm totally confused...........

  • props man..looks hella confusing 2 me

  • 萌え☆

  • it was 2nd,3rd4th in main and 2nd,3rd, 4th in brownie and then same splits in 5th

  • Real trucks have 2 sticks!

  • Great Video.

Is he goin from 1st-2nd-3rd in the main trans, then 1st, 3rd, 4th in aux, then 4th main and 1st aux, then 1st, 3rd, 4th again in the aux trans?

  • it went like this. 2,2 3,2 4,2 4,3 4,4 5,2 5,3 and finally 5,4 With 5:29 rear ends and with a direct main box you really don't need to split every gear.

  • I was hoping it'd be listed here somewhere! My first guess had pinned, 1x2, 2x2, 3x2, but then i saw the pattern... heh :P my second guess was right though, sweet stuff! is it easier understanding it more before you actually do it? or is it one of those things you just have to learn when you do it?

  • Eh Hotrod, yer Daddy's shifting it the way my Daddy taught me on "Big Red," the Parker Ranch Peterbilt cabover, love it man!!!

  • If you like the 2 stickers, im sure you will love the straight pipes. Check it out!

  • We used to have a 1971 Autocar with a 10 speed twin stick...not many people know how to drive them things...looks like you have it all figured out!! Good job and great video..thanks for the ride!! 5 stars!!

  • thats actually my father. But i do have the whole system figured out.
