It's a beautiful song and I really don't get where that Don Black critic could call it a tantrum. That's critics for you, they tend to be off their rockers most of the time. This song has an extended instrumental intro/lead-in which was not included in this version, so I'm hoping to get it somewhere. IMO it's the absolute best from her. I'm going to learn it.

Allow us to correct the previous post. Alannah wrote Song Instead Of A Kiss with collaborator Nancy SImmonds while on a songwriting sabbatical at the Crane Beach Hotel in Barbados from a poem written by Robert Priest in 1991. A demo was then sent by their label (Atlantic Records) unbeknownced to Alannah, requesting Sir Robert sing a duet on the song.

Upon hearing the track Robert rightfully declined then wrote 29 Palms in commemoration of her Song Instead Of A Kiss after Alannah had introduced Mr. Plant when they visited her favourite place in California's desert hotel, 29 Palms in Joshua Tree.

Robert did however play his song over the radio to Alannah from the studio where it was recorded in Bath, UK.

Robert Plant wrote and sang "29 Palms" to Alannah Myles over the telephone when they dated in the early 1990's. She wrote this song in response to "29 Palms". Neat stuff...
