@zucchini2007 No, this performance was actually a filmed movie in Mantua--as in the town of the Duca of Mantua, whom is Pava's character in the film and opera.
Pfffff. ganging up on an orphan, look at you two! I bet you don't even like music, you fuckin obese hypocrites ! You just need a greasy celebrity to make you feel good about drinking cooking oil from the bottle. Sorry that some of us still prefer walking instead of rolling as a primary form of transportation !
@jacksambuck67 I exercise daily, you fool, but can at least show the decency to respect this man for his accomplishments. Forgive me for neglecting to acknowledge your parents earlier, who I now extend my condolences to, but their deaths don't give you the right to disrespect Pavarotti so crudely. @braeburnification Jesus Christ. Now I'm feeling bad about the imaginary deaths of my parents ! I really can't take this emotional manipulation. Why can't you just let me troll in peace ? You are a horrible, horrible human being. That is all.
I lost both my parent to cardiovascular diseases. Don't tell me how I feel ! I have zero tolerance for fatness-promoting hippos like Pavafatty. How many will have to die so that people like him can have their daily dozens of deep-fried donuts ? His singing sucks on top of it! This conversation is over.
Am i the only one to be bothered by this human balloon ? He's like a cross between a morbidly obese swine and a teenage whale. His character is supposed to be a ladies man, for christ's sake ! Instead we get Mr. Fatty Fatface and his stupid voice. What kind of woman would risk being crushed to death by 2 tons of lard ?
@jacksambuck67 You are sooooo jealous! BTW--back in the days being portrayed here, heavy men and women were considered more wealthy and affluent because they could AFFORD the food to be that size. It is a widely reported fact that, no matter his size, Pava always had a bevy of beautiful women at his beck and call. That hot blooded Italian could turn on the charm in an instant and oozed sensuality even when not trying!
@whonelly1220 Hehe--yup! Its always best to have the volume on LOW, and then add if needed, according to the quality of the recording. Pava can blast your ears out!--lol
@KSquared57 Oh yes! In a parody, and I would love to see that! That has nothing to do with his talent. In fact, only famous people get parodied. You have to be SOMEONE. No one cares about parodies of losers.
@saverubi google "Rigoletto Synopsis" for details. But there are also several videos of this aria with English subtitles including an older Pavarotti performance from the Met.
@turkey08041954 Pavarotti was wonderful (this is from someone who heard him live in operas). Today in addition to Florez who is a leggiero tenor, we have lyric tenors like Beczala or Grigolo, spinto/dramatic like Kaufmann and also a Korean tenor Yonghoon Lee who brought Met down during his debut; Brownlee - another leggiero. There are other excellent tenors today, maybe not Pavarotti but still good. Check out Michael Fabiano - very young but has a lot of potential. Just IMHO.
@jewelmarkess I'm admiring Grigolo more and more as his voice matures! I think Pava may have been right on the mark when naming Grigolo as his successor. Not the same large voice as his mentor, but round, resonating, and the way with the Italian. Still needs abit of work on support in the pianissimo, but getting there. I am worried that he is already venturing into the heavy Verde--not in performance but in recording. I do wish he would wait a few more years, but if he keeps the
@appeace1 voice and continues to mature and work on the technique that Pava taught him--he very well may be the next GREAT tenor---time will tell. I sure pray I get to see him live!
@appeace1 Grigolo did Puccini at the Met, he sang Rodolfo in La Boheme. I haven't heard his singing of anything heavier than Rigoletto, which Verdi operas has he recorded? I hope he is careful and doesn't follow in DiStefano and Carreras footsteps. I agree with your assessment of him, I'd like to hear him live though.
@jewelmarkess Contrary to what i was told, I cannot find him singing anything heaver than the Nessun and Triviata. I still wish he would hold off on singing those frequently for awhile. I believe his voice is just now darkening nicely and later he probably will be able to get into the heaver operas nicely. Right now, every rendition of Nessun I hear he sounds like he is straining the voice in an attempt to add power or heft. I know he reveres Pava,
@appeace1 but right now, he hasn't, in my opinion, got the big, powerful voice of Pava and I'd would hate to hear him ruin the lovely instrument he does have by taking on these roles too soon. He should learn from his mentor and reserve those roles for later in his career--in my opinion. Seems, according to his website and his schedule, he will be in Europe all this season. I couldn't find any America dates.
@appeace1 I've always considered Alfredo a lyric tenor role. But like you I do hope he doesn't ruin his voice the way Villazon ruined his (and Di Stefano and Carreras before them). I think these days many a lyric tenors doing Nessun Dorma in concert even though they couldn't approach Calaf - Calleja, Lomeli, Fabiano (who is still very young, but a lot of potential), etc. Interestingly, I've not heard Kaufmann doing Nessun Dorma even though he is a dramatic tenor.
@jewelmarkess There is one recording of Kaufman performing Nessun on here, but and bear in mind this is only my humble opinion, it is not very good. I don't know if he was having vocal problems or just a bad day but, to my ear, it is off pitch so badly that I cannot listen to the entire aria. His voice wobbles so much that he cannot stay on note and there are so many ghost vowels, and the high notes ----well---just go listen for yourself. Perhaps I'm not "getting it".
@appeace1 I found the Kaufmann's recording you mentioned - somehow missed it before. You are right, I had to stop almost right away. Some kind of a weird first attempt or just a bad night because it's very different from his other recordings of different arias.
@jewelmarkess Yes, I agree he does do a better job on other arias. However, and this is only to my ear, he still seems to "search" for the correct note especially at the beginning of phrases and just prior to the high range. Still in these he uses many ghost vowels, and in my opinion, does not have the way with the Italian pronunciation. I do not understand how a reputable record company would release that recording of Nessun--
@appeace1 -surely we are not the only two who heard this. I must say, for my preference currently, I like Grigolo, then Alagna. For my preference Kaufmann's voice is too dark, too baritonal for a Tenor. Much more "dramatic" than spinto or even lyric, which is the tenor I do prefer---can't imagine why--lol! So, perhaps just an off day for him on the Nessun--or perhaps he has one of those rare voices that just doesn't record well and really needs be heard live to really hear his talent.
@daria031177 "fickle" is a better translation than "unstable" context-wise. He isn't singing that a woman is mentally unstable, he is singing that she is fickle in that she changes her mind easily about whom she likes. Which is ironic in context given that he is the one who is fickle.
@bestisbmw I don't how to translate, because all the song is written in "antique italian", so it's quite difficult to understand, very hard to translate. Anyway, literal, it means "And of thinking" that is not correct in english but ... if you put all the verses together you understand that means that "the woman's thinking is mute." ( quite bad english, sorry. )
@538921 Watch PBS. Not sure about your area, but in many areas they air opera broadcasts from the Met as well as classical music concerts every now and then. They even have several of their recent Great Performances available as free webcasts on their website. But for the most part you are absolutely right.
@mwhitten77 So true! I have been told by classical singers that some weight actually aids in making it easier to "support" the note but excessive weight does make it harder to breathe, and I believe this is obvious in Pava's later years when he was not able to adhere to the bel canto style and spin out those long phrases for lack of sufficient breath. So very sad that he allowed his "managers" to convince him that being a huge man would make him instantly recognizable by the public.
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii (3 minutes later) iiieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee fensiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. god bless him
@RocKaraoker The way films were made then, and mostly are today, the singers actually sing to a "backup tape" while filming in order to get the "placement" of words and to do the "acting" part. However, the actual singing is recorded in the studio and "matched" to the film because actually recording the singing and even the talking on-set would also pick up the noise of any passing car, plane, cough, dropped item, footsteps, etc. The "Rigoletto" filmed live in Mantua w/Grigolo and
@appeace1 Domingo, is a prime example of this as it was filmed live and one can hear coughing off frame, footsteps not by actors. and various non-scripted noise. Despite this it was a very enjoyable film.
@RocKaraoker FYI: if you want to see the Rigoletto movie filmed in Mantua w/Grigolo that appeace1 refers to, you could just google for "PBS Great Performances Rigoletto in Mantua video" - PBS showed this on tv in the US, and they now make the video available to everyone who missed it; it has English subtitles.
@xXxdeadmanxXx1 They are not. Grigolo, Beczala, Kaufmann, Florez, Brownlee; Kwiecien, Mattei, Damrau, Dessay, Garanca, Netrebko, etc. etc. etc. are not fat. There are many slim and good-looking opera singers.
@yallowrosa Hehe--La Donna was crazy! When it concerns Pava, especially as the Duca, what woman in her right mind would be mobile??? I'd be right there within arms reach!!--lol
@ColFeren Crap film??? I bet thousands upon thousands of females would beg to differ when Pava rises an eyebrow, flashes that smile or hoods those lovely dark eyes!---Me included!--lol
@PetitCorpsSalade Opera is beautiful, Pavarotti is great, one of the best ever, but there are other excellent singers and other beautiful arias. PBS has a video of the new Italian tv movie based on this opera on their website filmed in Italy on location (if interested google PBS Great Performances Rigoletto video). Different cast but still beautiful. Of course if you want this one, there is a DVD.
@darkrose834 This is a video with English subtitles (this is from Pavarotti's singing it in 1981 live at the Met): /watch?v=k8UerodV2n0 If you want an idea about the actual context, you could google for "Rigoletto synopsis".
@darkrose834 You are welcome. In case you are interested, new Italian tv movie based on this opera filmed in Mantua that was on PBS a couple of months ago is available on PBS website with English subtitles (no registration required, just click and watch the complete broadcast). No Pavarotti there, and vocally not quite as great as here, but still a beautiful movie. You can find it by googling "PBS Great Performances Rigoletto from Mantua video".
@jewelmarkess Starring as the Duca, Vittorio Grigolo! Very enjoyable live film. Grigolo has the "Italian Tenor" sound; and he made his debut with Pava in Tosca at the ripe old age of 13 and was a student of Pava until Pava passed and then he studied w/Domingo. Im loving this young man's voice--- is not the voice of Pava but since this film his voice has taken on that more dark, velvety quality, I love in Pava's voice and his technique is much the same. He will be great in his own right!
@appeace1 I agree. Vittorio Grigolo is excellent. I hadn't known he made the debit with Pavarotti and was his student - interesting. Also, because it's a movie, looks/acting are important, and Grigolo looks like the Duke. Vocally my issues with the new movie is that Domingo while a great artist still sounds like a tenor (even though he hits low notes fine) so there is less contrast in voice color between Rigoletto and the duke. Also Raimondi is way past his prime. Still a fantastic movie.

is this a studio version and he played the role without singing?
RocKaraoker 1 month ago
@RocKaraoker The way films were made then, and mostly are today, the singers actually sing to a "backup tape" while filming in order to get the "placement" of words and to do the "acting" part. However, the actual singing is recorded in the studio and "matched" to the film because actually recording the singing and even the talking on-set would also pick up the noise of any passing car, plane, cough, dropped item, footsteps, etc. The "Rigoletto" filmed live in Mantua w/Grigolo and
appeace1 1 month ago
@appeace1 Domingo, is a prime example of this as it was filmed live and one can hear coughing off frame, footsteps not by actors. and various non-scripted noise. Despite this it was a very enjoyable film.

@RocKaraoker FYI: if you want to see the Rigoletto movie filmed in Mantua w/Grigolo that appeace1 refers to, you could just google for "PBS Great Performances Rigoletto in Mantua video" - PBS showed this on tv in the US, and they now make the video available to everyone who missed it; it has English subtitles.

xXxdeadmanxXx1 1 month ago
@xXxdeadmanxXx1 They are not. Grigolo, Beczala, Kaufmann, Florez, Brownlee; Kwiecien, Mattei, Damrau, Dessay, Garanca, Netrebko, etc. etc. etc. are not fat. There are many slim and good-looking opera singers.

He will be great in his own right!
appeace1 2 months ago
@appeace1 I agree. Vittorio Grigolo is excellent. I hadn't known he made the debit with Pavarotti and was his student - interesting. Also, because it's a movie, looks/acting are important, and Grigolo looks like the Duke. Vocally my issues with the new movie is that Domingo while a great artist still sounds like a tenor (even though he hits low notes fine) so there is less contrast in voice color between Rigoletto and the duke. Also Raimondi is way past his prime. Still a fantastic movie.
