  • great vid. but next time please speak louder and turn the back ground noise/music down. thanks.

  • Hi i have a bridge camera , nikon coolpix l120 can this be acheived with this camera ?

  • hey man how can i go longer than 30 seconds? i like to photograph the stars, so i need long exposures. I have the same d40. good video:)

  • Thank you! :)))

  • Hey, so... anyone who starts a sentenc with "Hey, so..." just sounds like a dickhead to me, so, I'm sorry, but I just couldn't watch more than 30 seconds of this.

Yes, it's probably my shortcomings shining through!

Yes, I probably am an asshole!

OK, I probably am trolling and my comments have NO value whatsoever.

But wtf, I said it, I meant it now let the trolling begin!

(note: I won't return to read your replies, but knock yourselves out anyway!)

  • @RocksterOO1 I apologise, I was having a bad day when I posted that crap, my inner troll surfaced and went to town on the wrong people. I'm sorry.

You're doing a great service and if it weren't for people like you, willing to take the time to make these tutorial videos, the pastime wouldn't be anywhere near so accessible le to the rest of us.

I apologise unreservedly for my earlier statement, I am suitably ashamed of myself and will do all future trolling on more deserving cases, I promise :)

  • Very nice video. Much appreciated!

  • Okay, now I have another question. I have the same camera - Nikon D40 - I've set all the settings the same way as in the video, but when I start taking the shot, it waits two seconds like told to, but once it takes the shot, the shutter goes off immidiately, not about 5 seconds later like it did for you. Only thing that's different is that I don't have a tripod and I've placed the camera on a table instead. What could I possibly be doing wrong?

  • So I'm new to this, do you actually need a tripod no matter what?

  • @InkieHD For this particular kind of photography I would say a tripod is a must only because the shutter is open for so long that not using a tripod can give you some pretty blurry results. That being said, you don't NEED a tripod... you can just put the camera on a flat surface... pretty much do anything to reduce camera movement during the exposure.

  • @meldonlobo Ah, that's what I kinda thought, thanks!

  • thanks! This was really helpful!

  • Thank you so much, ive saw this effect many times and ive always wanted to know how to do and i managed it on my Canon SX30 IS, so thank you :-)

  • Whats the difference between a DSLR and a SLR?

  • @iLoveMusic0927 Digital-SLR=DSLR

  • How annoying is that background noise, total distracting from the tutorial, you wouldn't get that in the classroom....

  • Thank you.

  • Thanks for this tutorial! My roommates and I just tried this a while ago with my new Nikon D5100 DSLR camera. This video is very helpful. Keep it up!

  • The music was fuckin anoying, you should drop the music whenm making a "how to" video. Im just saying!

  • Has a DSLR, films with a cheap camera.

  • @DanIsTotallyUncool has a cheap DSLR aswell!

  • Great tutorial mate. Great tune aswel.

  • Sorta looks like Ray william Johnson?

  • Thanks man. simple and straight to the point.

  • Yay more ATB Fans!! :D

  • what does iso mean? my camera in "s" mode I can't find anything that says iso. i have the shutter speed. above that is the aperture which when in "s" mode I can't change. and then there is something called "oev" which can go from -2 to +2. is that what I'm looking for?

  • @TasteForDisaster ISO stands for "International Organization of Standards" but in Cameras specifically it refers to Film speed... even if your camera does not have an ISO setting you should still be able to take those shots in S mode. IF you find that the picture is too-bright (over-exposed) then set it to -2 OEV that is an exposure compensation setting that lets you shoot at a lower shutter speed but without over exposing the frame

  • @meldonlobo I see, thank you. just one more thing. the lowest I can get on my camera is a shutter speed of 30seconds. now I've seen some nice pictures done of the sunset over a period of 5. is there any way I can get 5 minutes of exposure out of my camera?

  • @TasteForDisaster all cameras has iso, the mobile phones too

  • i can do that without dslr camera

  • tidy your room :P

  • its pronounced as----> neekon not nykon

  • This was an excellently made tutorial. Thanks for the background info. I am really excited about pulling some nice night shots now.

  • thanks bro!

  • does anyone know the Music thats playing in the background ! ?

  • @Genthilton "Don't Stop" by ATB.

  • @meldonlobo Love the song!!!

  • can i do this with an Olympus digital camera?

  • Thanks Man.. the Video was really helpful.. Have you posted video on how to shoot on other modes of the camera and get the most of it? Please let me know.. thanks..

  • Most digital pocket cameras can do this fyi

  • do you think i could do this with a sonyDSC H1?

  • @auzzie60 Yup! just use the Shutter-priority mode! (S mode)

  • @meldonlobo Thanks!

so then do i just tweak the settings similar to this?

  • @auzzie60 Yup once youre in S mode you can just play around until the shutter stays open for however much time you want.

  • haha the smily face at the end was cool ^^

  • Hey my nikon D60 says "no bulb in s mode" and i don't know what "bulb" is, or how to change it. PLEASE HELP!!

  • @McDoubleDTC69 rotate the black knob at the back of the camera until it stops saying "bulb". BTW, "bulb" is when you hit the shutter button and it keeps the shutter open until you release the button

  • can you do this with a canon powershot sd1200 is??? :D or at least a diana mini :]

thanks for the video :D much appreciated :]

  • @molovesmusic567 yes you can!

  • @meldonlobo

sweeet :D is there a little tutorial i can look up? :]

  • I recently took a DSLR photography class at the local university. I WISH you were the teacher. I learned more from your short video than in 3-4 classes that I took and wasted my time and money at.

  • @PuffyandMimi thankyou!

  • @PuffyandMimi did u read your camera manual ?

  • thats awesome thanks for the info!!

  • hey everyone! see what u think of my photography please im having trouble getting people to see my work,so go to my channel and click the photography video and tell me what u think.thanks!

  • Hello I am a student looking to purchase a camera for as cheaply as possible. I have a very tight budget and have been looking at this camera. "Fujifilm FinePix S2950"

It seems to have all the specs I need for starting out, and fits within my budget. I cannot really afford a proper DSLR.

Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated!

  • do all nikons hav bulb shutter speed?

  • @mcdrummonkey All nikon dslrs do and some of the higher-end p&s

  • thank youu. very helpful.

  • I'am going to buy an Olympus Pen E-P1... can you please please please tell me whether it has a shutter control or not?

  • @mpotsaris88 Yup! It has a full-manual option with shutter priority mode!

  • @meldonlobo is a d3000 better than a d40?

  • Really well explained video cheers

  • wow thx a lot man

im going to try it out now

    :D

and i want to ask u about CPL filter

what does it really do? does it protect your lens from scratches? or it makes the water motion so smooth?

    thx :D

  • @DVL1507 Both actually. Its a polarizing filter which it means it prevents light that is polarized at certain angles from entering your camera; this means that water and anything shiny (glass, metal .etc) tends to look better and sharper because the filter removes any polarized light that might be bouncing off the shiny object and give it a "blurry" sheen. I had a CPL filter on my Sigma 18-200mm lens (which i dropeed from about ~4ft) and the CPL filter cracked but the lens was totally fine!

  • @meldonlobo oookayyy

thx a lot:D i bought the normal UV filter anyway

just to protect the lens in case of anything happens

  • @christieandnick I believe the EOS 100d has a "Tv" mode? It stands for "Time Value" so how long you want to leave the shutter open... hope that helps!

  • Can I use a Nikon D70S?

  • thanks dude, your tutorial was pretty good...but the music is really distracting !! :|

  • A basic trick, but for those who don't understand this this is a really nice tutorial. My compliments!

  • Great explanation of not only long exposure shots, but the basics involved. You communicate the details and thoughts very clearly and should seriously think about more tutorials in the future.

  • can u do this with a sony dsc hx1?

  • Maybe easier way to select M mode and make open aperture as possible ant shutter speed make about 5sec or in darkroom up to 30sec and vuala. Smaller ISO to

  • is that raywilliamjohnson!!

  • Ok i got the same screen now but how do i change the f stop setting?

  • i have a d40and my screen doesnt look like this?

  • I can do that With a FZ100 By Lumix?

    From Costa Rica, Nice Video

  • @Varguitas10 Yes you can... it should have a shutter mode.

  • Good information... thanks!

  • rwj and kassem had a child !

  • Hey, if I am on the Black Room, and take the Exposure to MAX, it maybe see, on the Camara, Right?

  • Chocolate rain!

  • retard!

  • how do u take star shots with a d60 using a 18 -105mm

  • tried this and have fun making different stuff

  • Awesome thanks for posting this! you rule

  • omg you look like tay zonday with long hair, nice video

  • Try cleaning up your room next time ya friggin slob!!!

  • he looks like rwj lol

  • lol, you should be a bit more creative with doing light graffiti, the photo looks like someones scribbled on it!

  • What remix is the the Don't stop you're playing?

  • Thank You. That's exactly what i wanted to do. I just got a nikond3000 yesterday and i just need a memory card then that will be the first thing i try :D

  • Thank you so much, I am soooo much a beginner and have a D60

  • he got a cute face !!!!!

and yes... i got a good tip from him...

  • That helped a lot. Thank you

  • That guy is cool ! And it really help alot...

  • You remind me of Kumar haha Good Vid dude... Thanks!

  • thanks for the vid!

  • i have a d40 too and i take alot of photos of skateboarding. im no pro photographer so i was wondering if you knew how to take faster sequence shots cause the fastest i can get is like three shots per second and in skateboarding thats a long time

  • are you shooting in RAW? because I noticed that once you change the file mode from RAW to JPEG, it'll take pictures much faster... you might also think about getting a faster memory card.. theres a reason that SD cards range from $20 to $200 for the 4Gigs.. its the data access speed, the faster the better.

  • @thatguysucks thats kinda weird cuz basically all i do is take skate shots and i was gunna get a d40 but they stoped makin them so my mom decided to get a d3000 for my birthday instead and this camera is awsome. but change it to s mode and u ccan mess around with it.

  • @thatguysucks for the 3 frames per second are you pressing the shutter buton so you have to press the button each time you take the picture or you press and hold the shutter button for a continuius burst of shots?

  • you look funny

  • great video, like the simple explanation! Keep up the good work.

  • it is good, but it is much cooler in dark room with at least 20s shuter speed and iso as much smaller for details (mm)

  • Nice Vid!

    Thanks for the simple explanation!

  • My sister owns a D40

  • awesome

  • i think my camera can only stay open for 5 seconds

    it sucks

  • background music is a little loud. but good tutorial.

  • excellent. very well done!

  • u should turn off the background music. i can barely hear what ur saying.

  • great video! thanks

  • oh thanks, i always wondered how to do that :) .... im gettin a D3000 & i cant wait to take some pictures :)!!

  • just got mine and its amazing!!!

  • The smiley at the end is cool :)

  • from one brown skin to another....thanks man....

  • I have the D40x and am trying to do this but it keeps telling me the lighting is either poor...then I get more like and it tells me it's too bright...any ideas?

  • cool video

  • great tutorial

  • how come me d40's screen looks different. in terms of layout of where the shutter speed is and whatnot. is yours an older firmware?

  • There are two different ways the D40's screen is represented. You can change this under settings and "info screen" there is a "classic" display (the one in the video) and the "graphical display" (the one that is the D40's default)

  • tried to do a smiley face been trying for an hour still cant but cant do simple stuff

  • Use the manual mode instead (M). so you can use a smaller aparture. this makes sure you can use the camera in totally dark areas.

  • LOL, I just tried this and got a photo where I looked like a ghost and was faded out, with a little bit of the light design. How did you get that 500 something under the (F) symbol? I think that was my problem, mines was at 200 something. I just got mines and learning, thanks for showing me how to use that feature.

  • that number is showing how many more pictures your memory card can hold until its full. hope that helps!

  • have got it ( d40 ) recently ...

    thanks for the video ..

can u please ... show us .. the use of every single point in the menu bar ? ...

  • I have got it ( d40 ) recently ...

    thanks for the video ..

can u please ... show us .. the use of every single point in the menu bar ? ...

  • yay thanks it worked :D

  • awsome

My D40 in on the way, am gonna try this

ddam, y i ordered groud service, cant wait anymore

  • yoo awesome video !

I am a noob at slrs and I just got a D40 ... so can you tell me how to make the shutter speed to 5" ... i am totally lost.

What exactly increases the number and in what selection in the menu do I have to be in? am I suppose to spin the dial on the top right of the camera or use the keypad ??

    thx

  • Put the camera in "S" mode 1st.. by moving the knob with the icons on it on the top of the camera (on the right side). Once you are there move the jog-dial on the top-right-hand side of the back of the camera... in S mode it changes the shutter speed. Keep turning it until it says 5"

  • can i use a point and shoot from sony? its the dsc w120.

  • yah as long has it has an "S" mode on it

  • I acheeved a far greater effect with is by putting it in manual, shutter speed 30 secs and ISO 400 in complete darkness

I got a ghost like effect by iluminatig myself in varous positions

  • can I use a Nikon D40x?

  • Absolutely, the D40x is exactly the same as the D40 but has a higher resolution CCD sensor. 12.1MP instead of the D40's 6.1MP's

  • it has 10.2 MPX

  • the d40x does

  • Yup yup, the Cybershot has all the modes you need to pull this off

  • cool, do u think u could tell me how to do it alittle? thanks, soz for double comments

  • Comment removed

  • great tutorial! the music was totally distracting, but it was informative and i learned from it. :)

  • how do you make the exposure time longer than 30 seconds?

  • Keep rotating the black knob on the inside-upper-right hand corner untill it says "bulb" then you can keep the shutter open for as long as you like.. click it once to open, click it again to close it

  • just bought a D90 wht a wicked camera going to try this one onit cheers

  • nice camera dude

  • that is one of the best tuts ive seen... thanks... u should make more! i subd

  • thanx! I wanna do another.. but i don't know what topic i should do.. any suggestions?

  • i think u should do a basic tut on how to use the nikon d40.... lol i would watch it.

  • you should do mini picture movies... Like when you take 100 pictures and stitch them together so it looks like a movie

  • cool, do u think u can gie me alittle idea how to do it? thanks!

  • Thank you! I don't really want to do that sort of picture but the step by step was really helpful to me to get the basics, thank for explaining so well

  • Thank you for this!! I was trying to figure it out by reading the manual, but I'm much more of a visual learner. This really helped. Great job.

  • noooo problem!

  • Thanks, that is a great Idea. Am going to try right away.

  • Can you make a video on how to use the S,P,A, and M modes on the D40?

  • nice man, thanks.

I'm new to the dslr market and am prob going to get the d40 in a few days. I'm trying to learn as much tricks and techniques as possible so i can play around with the camera when i get it!

  • np man! Hey, really look into getting a better lens for the D40 cuz the kit lens that comes with it kinda holds the camera back from it's full capabilities... its a worthy investment cuz you can always use the lens if u ever upgrade ur camera

  • This is great, thanks for sharing. I've seen something like this before and I been wondering how they do it and all. Like for example Micheal Bosanko's work, it's totally amazing and I wish I could do something like that. Can I do this in a Kodak Z712 IS camera?

  • Thanx, you can totally do this on a Kodak Z712 (thats not a bad camera actually) Just pop it into "S" mode and choose like a 5 or 10 second shutter speed... should turn out great

  • Simple and effective. You're the man.

  • Thanx!

  • YOU LOOK LIKE TAY ZONDAY

  • haha no way!

  • I love doing this..

  • thank you so much! i was struggling for forever but thanks a bunch!

  • No prob mate!

  • Comment removed

  • Cool Cool... i'm pretty sure you can do it on a sony cybershot.. just gotta figure out how to change shutter speed

  • thanksss :D

  • this cud be only used with that camera?
