Um.. I've never seen this anime. In fact, Konata's karaoke singing brought me here even though she was singing Magic Monkey from the series Monkey. I grew up with Dragonball and Dragonball Z and this anime looks a lot like them. It's to be expected since both animes are based on Journey to the West. I'm curious now about this anime... Is it good or should I stick to my beloved Dragonball?
OMG! I used to watch this like at 5 in the mornning on week days before school on WB! Lol has a new Champ named Wukong and he reminded me of this old show and I looked it up! Hadent seen this in about 10-12 years...Thank you =')
ok, extending magical staff, ride-able nimbus cloud, a 50 story tall non-winged dragon with antlers and 2 long sensory whiskers... yea, never seen the series but he better not grant wishes..
@supermancrashin its not a rip off. they are both inspired by the classic chinese tale Journey to the West. Whereas DBZ is only very loosely based on the tale, Monkey Magic is somewhat more true to the story. Both share coincidences because they are both inspired by the story.
I liked this anime. Pitty it wasn't as successful as it was made it out to be. I still want to watch the whole thing from start to finish since I missed out the first time around.
@plasma4ce I know! All I could remember was the 'Monkey Magic right now!' from the theme song. I tried finding it several years ago, but had given up hope and began to think that maybe I had just misheard some other theme song...
The only thing that's wrong with this is that they made the opening too "happy" for the show. The episodes were far too serious for that opening. And what are the words to the intro?
Again, both Dragonball and Monkey Magic are based on the 2,000 year old Chinese tale Journey to the West!!! I never got to see this cartoon when it was first aired; hard to believe it was actually animated in japan!
Holy crap I've been looking for this show for so long. I used to watch it when I was little but never understood the plot. It felt epic though. I forgot about it but then saw Monkey Gone to Heaven music video by the Pixies and realized it was based off of Journey to the West and it looks amazing!
All I remember from the last episode I watched, was they made their home into a fortress, and a load of airships were coming to blow them to kingdom come... Never was able to find any other episodes... Did they even continue it after that episode? Any answers would be appreciated.
Also, the Playstation game for this was filled with so much win <3
(sigh) This show was so god like. It reminds me of the movie Lord of the Wutang, how they were supposed to continue the story, but didn't, even though it was spectacular. Guess people don't appreciate the good stuff. But at least they continued with another branch off of the same story, which eventually turned into that show we all know and love! (Dragon Ball Z) Unfortunately, they eventually went to far with that. Guess either it's too much or not enough in this world.
@AmuroGabe: thanks for posting. This was a great series. I know of the story of Journey to the West and that this is based on it, but I don't see the connection of JTTW to Dragonball. It's possible that I did not see enough of the series. Can you suggest some episodes that will make the connection clearer. The only connection I see is that the Sayans turn into monkeys. (Giant, destructive, killer monkeys!)
@wmdbassplayer I don't think there's any real connection other than Goku is somewhat based on Sun Wukong who both have an extending staff and a cloud they ride on. In the description I wrote that Dragonball is based on Journey to the West but it's more like inspired by.
@AmuroGabe I think the first season of Dragon Ball contains element of Journey to the West until Dragon Ball Z in which the story deviated to a more sci-fi element.
@AmuroGabe I can see tons of Dragon Ball in this op. C'mon boy who turns into a monkey, flying on a cloud, magic staff, shenlong dragon, onis, the mountain set
@Canada1991 No, I don't feel that it is so obvious. Who represents the traveling monk and the Enlightened Pig in the Dragonball series? Like AmuroGabe replied to me, Dragonball is more likely inspired by than actually based on Journey to the West. I think that someone who heard of the story but is unfamiliar with it would not make any connection at all. Also, did you read our full exchange? I admitted that maybe I did not see enough of the Dragonball series to make the connection.
@MysteryGremlin101 : There is a difference between something being based on a source material and something being inspired by the same source material. Monkey Magic is based on Journey to the West. I would have to say that the Dragon Ball series is very loosely inspired by JTTW.
Oolong is Pigsy (Chu), Yamcha is Friar Sand (Sha Monk). Bulma is clearly the tripitaka figure. And they are on a journey to retreive the dragon balls, although in this case you could simply associate it with a random journey.
In an early episode, Oolongs origins, he uses a demon form to trick a woman into marrying him, just like Chu Pa Cheh did.
@wmdbassplayer Early Dragonball has a lot more similarities. Like he had the extending staff that he stopped using, a few characters are loosely based on JTTW characters.
@wmdbassplayer the connection is with the original DB, Goku was Goku, bulma was the monk, oolong was the pig. yamcha was the other guy that tries to rob them but then joins them. I am sorry I barely remember Jtw. apart from that Goku has the flying cloud and the magical Rod. Its inspiration.
@wmdbassplayer And also, theres the similarity of the names. Goku or Son GoKu is the japanese name for Sun Wu Kong whoes the monkey king in Journey to the west. But everything else is described perfectly by OP.
@wmdbassplayer Dragon Ball Z is a sequel to DRAGON BALL, which was originally about Goku journeying westward with a young woman he had to protect, accompanied by a motley crew of companions including a pig (Oolong). The series morphed from an adventure comedy to a martial arts action show over it's course, culminating with Goku's defeat of the original King Picollo and later fighting his son, the green man you know as Picollo.
As it transistioned from Dragon Ball to DBZ it adopted more scifi.
Nothing like the original Japanese live action series.. and that was REALLY funny, first few episodeswe got in Australia even came uncensored, complete with Title character swearing, f words and all, and calling Pigsy a Poofter at the drop of hat... ok that got silenced fast, but this.. why do they have to always fuck things by making this sort of shit.
I remember Monkey Magic... I grabbed the DVDs as soon as I could cause now they are super hard to find. I wish they would have continued it past the Slime Lord part!
They are both based on the legend that involved a being with special power. The character is actually more true to the original than the dragon ball one.
goku & kongo both have a cloud to ride on & they also use the similar of red/gold power pole, but kongo's power pole is more advanced than goku's power pole for goku can only make it extend in length while kongo can do the same but inscrease his mass in his power pole but goku & kongo also played the role of the hero lol
Well Dragonball series was kinda based on it when goku was a child with the whole monkey tail and flying Nibus cloud. But they never really explain it in Dragonball Series.
But Dragon Ball Z and GT are nothing like Monkey Magic show. I guess they gave it a twist later on.
Really, the DBZ series was so very loosely based on the real story. Even after I knew both series I didn't make any connection whatsoever to the two until it was mentioned.
As far as I'm concerned, dragonball was NOT anything like MM and Goku NOTHING like Sun Wukong (Kongo), But both series were awesome, all the same.
man that was a cool show it kinda felt a little dragonball to me but not much it was funny though hey anyone remember samurai pizza cats!?!?!!? that was a riot! thanks for makeing this vid it's grate!
omg i loved this show my fam. loved this show and if i ever talk bout it wif my friends they are like magical monkey? gay! im like hell nah you should watch it...they never do. but anyways I LOVED THIS SHOW AND I LOVE THIS SONG!
I remember this show!! I watched it like every saturday! But now-a-days when I try to ask people about it they just say: "I think you are getting Dragon ball mixed up with something else.".
do anyone know where I can find the whole theme of this theme at? I love this song and the show itself bring back so many happy memmories from my childhood.
This intro is like my favorite time machine....I remember being 11 yrs old, looking at UPN(The OLD CW), waking up to catch Iron Man and RoboCop in the mourning. Then coming home from school to catch DBZ, and I think Monkey Magic came on Sat. if my memories serve me right. All that was around 99'. Now I just turned 22, but I still miss that sense of "Freedom" I had when I was younger...
I remember thinking this theme song was really intense when I was a kid, and that it was the kind of music I'd always want to listen to as a teenager and young adult... as it turns out, I was totally wrong Haha
It sounds like something the band who played the Scooby Doo theme song would have done in 1986.

Yeah I got the same feeling when I just watched it today. Its the same but for some reason when I was kid I thought it was harder lol
