I think the lines are there so he knows how far he should be stepping.
He is 6'1" and he only was striding 5 foot lengths.
Proof you don't need a long stride to throw hard.

@basebull The farther you stride the less accurate you will be unless you do lunges a lot.

@basebull Yea, but the long stride creates velocity better, those who throw hard with a short stride use their arm more. Causing injury. You want a long stride. Learn about pitching before commenting.
