Hello all, First and foremost I find your lessons very inspiring. I use a tama iron cobra, I have for many years now. I've thought about purchasing a new one, but see no reason to. With this being said I have a hard time getting the response I want from the pedal itself. (Between the spring set up/and the way the pedal clamps onto the bass drum). Can you make a lesson on a basic pedal setup/maintainence so I can try something new, everything I try seems to make the pedal response worse! Thanks!
i use a combination of all three i use slide in general playing i use heel down for rolls and then for intricate double stuff i use heel toe and I absolutely recommend learning all three they all have their applications.
My muscles i guess arent developed enough so I have trouble playing at fast speeds. Plus I have the yamaha stage custom which is great and i added a sizzle 4th tom and splash but im short a double bass. All the drum stuff is so expensive so I periodicly get things. Are there any traning things I can do for my muscles?
My biggest struggle is my left foot is weaker than my right and like to randomly twitch when increasing speed. I can't go fast without it tweaking out.
I'm a beginner and I have a Roland Vdrum lite set. So the pedals are the least favourable of the kit, everything else is pretty natural. Heel up is fine, but I just can't seem to get height right or anything to do heel down. Is this just a question of practice? It's only that my foot is already at a slant and I can barely move by toe that much more 'up'. P.s. very short / small feet etc.
biggest struggle for me is matching speed with clarity...i can play double bass either very loud and distinct or very fast...but it seems the faster i get the less clear the notes are
i acculiy dont get faster with the heel toe and the slide both wont work faster how do i get faster thanks for answer guys i love freedrumlessons its coolest side on youtube
my problem is, how can i adjust my pedal to make it like, swingy? i wanna be able to play good times bad times. but i can't make my foot "catch" the swing of the pedal to make it bounce again on the triplets you know what i'm talking about?
have you ever try to play singles like: heel heel, toe toe? Like RLRL but first R is heel and second R is toe? So you can play quite fast with heel toe technique but use to play singles. To avoid this doubles sound like Jared do this.
I use slide technique a lot, mostly because my pedals make heel-toe hard and I swear I'm not being a pussy about it. I have 1970's Rogers Supreme pedals with the springs really loose and medium-loose heads (14"x22" kicks don't really have a wide pitch range). With a loose spring, heel-toe is near impossible. It's more suited to modern pedals where a loose spring doesn't mean "floppy" and it really means "floaty".
i find dat some days i can blast double very fast like there's no 2moro but i find if i remove my slave pedal and just do some single pedal work when i come back to playing high tempo double bass i struggle with the speed. my legs seems to literally stop working. any thoughts? thanks guys, luv ur vids :D
yeah I've got the same problem! Double beat is quite simple for me but a triplet in a tempo of 80 beats upward is to hard sometimes. But: I noticed that this stronlgy depends on the foot pedal. I've got a dw 5000 but it doesnt work for me. When I've got a different pedal though, I've got a good chance to get it working, up to 90 beats or even more. I don't know why but i keep practicing
That was weird. As I was thinking, "well this was a year ago" he said to do it anyways. My biggest problem/problems are A: Speed. Not knowing how to get faster and stronger and B: Accuracy.
great lessons..i have been playing drums for 13 or 14 yrs but never really worked on the speed of my hands or feet..i am a good drummer but not advanced..im working on that now...this lesson is really going to help me..thank you.
@XxskoolxX what set-up are you using? i think its all about feel...try having your pedals as tight as the go so they are harder to push down, then just start loosening them up equally, i like to keep my main pedal a little bit stiffer than the slave pedal just because i am more dominate to the right leg/ foot. but again, its all about how it feels to each person, no one is the same so what works for one might not work for everyone. hope this helps!
great video, super helpful. i love these guys and how they actively answer questions. just one little drum semantics thing that kinda bothered me....jared is using the "constant release" technique, originally named and perfected by steve smith. its an awesome technique and its the one i use. not a big deal or anything its just words but i was confused at first so i figured id throw that out there...thanks again guys, great job.
I have been playing drums for about 2 years i have issue when i play a song that i have to hit the bass drum twice in a row i start of strong but the longer i play that song i start to lose it and miss the second hit what can i do to fix that
i think my problem is my pedal cus not good or it just me .idk .i dont like the feeling of it.i also always lean back wen i go faster .idk i might just need to get use to it
I used to be a heel-down drummer, and I found that I had alot of control, but I couldn't get it fast enough, so I tried heel-up. Now I have the same amount of control in both, but I can go alot faster and stronger with heel-up, that's more natural with me, but I still can't get it fast enough, and just yesterday I found out about heel/toe, but it feels wierd putting your heel down in the middle of a beat. What do you guys suggest I keep practice on? Slide? Flat? Heel/toe?
I'm wondering how 32nd notes are done with the heel toe method. Is it RRLL or RLRL? Reason I wonder is because if you get going fast enough the RLRL method might be faster because you have more time between heel down and up if you alternate strokes.
@xXWhatUpDocXx you should play however you feel comfortable. i tried it without shoes for a while but i didn't like it much. I now play with a light and flat shoe e.g. Vans "Slip On" or something similiar...
when i see the way Jared does heel toe on hi hat at 34:08 ,and i was like ''hell yea, that's such a new cool way'' but when 35:25 comes, i fell off my chair with my pant wet -.-
@JackBlackNinja theyre performing more for technique than anything else, they're doing sound rather than speed, and also with all the mic reverb it would have sounded like sht both live and through mic
the way i play bass is i keep my heel down on the ground, and just lift the rest of my foot... but i can only do it for a short time, because my ankle hurts... and i can't start teaching myself a different way to play because it would take too long to re-train myself... any exercises i can do to strengthen my ankle?
@freedrumlessons Hey guys, I'm a self taught drummer of 5 years, I am a righty drummer, however I am left-hand lead drummer, so i feel the need to lead all my fills and even double kick patterns with my left. I'm worried that this is holding me back, I've been trying to fight it and lead more with my right but it just doesnt feel natural. Any suggestions? Thanks! -DevinLives (producer and composer)
@DevinLives Hey, left hand might be holding you back but dont get rid of it completely, you need to know how to start with both. Starting with each hand makes a greatly different feeling fill or beat. Many of the pros like to start with the left because lots of people start with the right so it makes something different. but it depends on how you start with your left. If u really feel its holding you back. so back to the basics. the 8th note fill around the tom but start with the right.
@MoonPhysical i agree with all of that, and yes, I have been back to basics since i realized how much it bothered me, geuss I just wanted a second opinion! Thanks MoonPhysical!
@DevinLives Also, i just listen to some of ur videos. not bad but i think u learning the moeller technique would be great for ur music. :) it would greatly give ur snare speed and give u that edge to make it feel like your a drum machine rather then a regular drummer. Msg me if u want some examples, but research JoJo Mayer, probably the most well known drummer for ur kind of drumming. Drum and bass and dubstep.
@DevinLives lol, well can i suggest a different snare sample? Its just my opinion but it sounds too rockish compared to other things :) gl and jojo still helps
keeping my left foot on beat with my right while i do double base, i can do triples and quad notes fine but once it gets more complicated then that my left foot just cant keep up
I struggle so much with playing fast double bass if it's any longer than 4 notes, and I simply can't keep my left foot caught up with my right. Need some help!
Great video! Some struggles I have are with double bass and just regular single bass if u wanna call it that. Especially with doubles I get fatigued easily and my legs become tires after practicing for a half hour. Any stamina lengthening/ leg strengthening techniques I could do?? Thanks hope to hear back!!
I can't keep the bass drumming at the same pace. I start with maybe 2 or 3 bps, But after like 10-20 sec I automaticly switch to bam bambambam (hard to explain, I guess it's one beat, short pause, then 3 beats rapidly.)
And I can't keep my sticks in one pace and my bass drumming in a slightly faster pace
So I've been practicing on my little bros drum set until I learn more and chose to invest in a higher quality set-- Everything's set up correctly but the pedal for the bass drum feels loose. What's the correct tightness for this pedal? I don't want to be over exerting myself if it's just a technicality with the set up. Thanks!
I can play the flat-foot technique pretty fast. I learned it by practicing heel-down and then raising my heels slightly off the pedal. It really works.
i have always played bass drum, double or single, heel down. i dont feel i have control when i have my heels up. i can go as fast as my hands heels down and faster. except when trying slide or heel toe

@bossman239505 It really doesnt matter. Some people think its easier with shoes. but once you actually get it, it really doesnt matter.

Also, any tips for double bass heel toe?
Joehhh69 2 months ago
I struggle so much with playing fast double bass if it's any longer than 4 notes, and I simply can't keep my left foot caught up with my right. Need some help!
Joehhh69 2 months ago
I'm having trouble with converting from single pedal to double pedal.More specifically, getting my left to catch up with my right
Also, I have a bit of an issue with the power I get out of my kick.. i feel the need to really force down when i play
please help:)

Thanks!
cbombz 3 months ago
@cbombz The correct tightness for the pedal is whatever feels comfortable for you.

I can play the flat-foot technique pretty fast. I learned it by practicing heel-down and then raising my heels slightly off the pedal. It really works.
Great lesson guys !!!
