@mi777ke777 i know what a 404 is. i just didn't know if they were still being manufactured. but i looked it up on the roland homepage and they are. sweet!!!
Kyle Gann mentioned this guy in the village voice many years ago & now thanks to ut I can find out what a great american composer and idea man he was!
to make a piece like this today is difficult. imagine the pain these composers went through in early days of electronic composition. tenney must have spent so much time on this piece alone, let alone all his other works.
Sampling existing (copyrighted) recordings using manipulation with tape recorders goes back at least as far as 1961, when James Tenney created Collage #1 ("Blue Suede") from samples of Elvis Presley's recording of the song "Blue Suede Shoes." At the time, many artists such as Brion Gysin and William S. Burroughs were experimenting with the new technology that was tape-recording by manipulating existing works such as radio broadcasts.
This genius is underappreciated due to the diabolical taste that America has towards the arts; great minds like Tenney get overshadowed by musically retarded minds like Adams and anything else that sounds like the arse of hollywood! May Tenney Rest in Peace
I reckon he is known but not widely known. Probably because not alot of people could appreciate this for what it really is. Like Karlheinz Stockhausen. Another great early electronic composer. Search him up if you already haven't.
I'm playing this at my next party.

Where's the video accompaniment for this by Stan Brakhage? I've seen it in a theatre. The collaboration is fantastic.
