This was Mats greatest goal. No one thought the Leafs would beat the stacked Flyers. Mats goal won the game and the leafs won the series. Pay back for the losses in the 70's. My Favourite series win since Lanny McDonald OT winner against Islanders.
I remember that game. I was 15 and I was like this game is done. Then Steve Thomas rushes down the right wing and backhands the puck past and ties the game and then Sundin with this goal...some things you don't forget!
@ostrand006 Well there almost no scoring in the game it was 1-0 flyers pretty much the whole game and i dont think the flyers could come back 52 seconds after being scored on twice in less than a minute
How he managed to score 1300 plus points with guys like Berezin and Thomas on his wing is beyond me. What if he actually had a star on his wing during a point in his career?
Thomas was one of the most clutch players in the league. How many clinching goals did he pot in the playoffs for how many different teams? Berezin had great speed down the boards, underrated in my opinion. He had Gary Roberts and Alex Mogilny too, don't forget.
true but thomas was never an elite scorer, clutch no doubt but not an elite scorer like sundin, jagr, lemieux, gretzky, hull, etc. berezin never hit 20 goals again in his career after leaving toronto without sundin as his linemate. roberts and mogily were great but all past their prime. i liked all those players but when they were playing for the leafs, they weren't hall of fame wingers in their prime.
All I can say is: Steve Yzerman. He never had an elite winger to play alongside, at least by your definition of an "elite" player. They had a multitude of players who knew what their roles were. They were the definition of a team.
i would consider shanahan an elite winger. he had over 600 goals in his career. federov did have 56 goals in a season. i'm not taking anything anyway from stevie yzerman though. he was an amazing player. and as for my last post, i'll admit sundin did have dougie but that was only for 2 years. after that he never had an elite winger in his prime.
your're right in both cases but i'm sure yzerman did play with federov at some point his career. i could be wrong though as i don't follow the wings. and your right, yzerman did play with some horrible wingers but he spent more time with shanahan than sundin did with gilmour. hull and robitaille were also on the wings in 02 and i'm sure he had one of them as a winger. shanahan, hull, and robitaille are all hall of fame players and sundin never had one in his prime.
I'm done debating this, because I think it's a moot argument. It's a collective "should've, would've, could've" from people who think Sundin was robbed of any playoff success because he didn't have a HOF winger.
He was the captain. The leader. The one making the most, if not close to the most money on the team year-in, year-out. His point totals never justified his contract. Period.
Sundin was a highly-skilled player, yes. But he never won a Stanley Cup. And that, to me, means something.
fair enough, you have valid arguments and you're not like others who claim sundin had no heart. you probably feel he isn't as great as people claim and that's fine, your opinion. i just consider what he's done in the olympics with forsberg and alfredsson to see his true potential.
We as TML fans haven't had much to cheer about and then the loss of Mats. We're damn hard on our players as fans but I was unbelievably impressed and humbled with the treatment he received when he came back with the Canuck's then won the game for them!!
Played 14 years with one team and did not waive his no trade clause to go to a true contender. He wanted to finish the season with the team he started with.
if he has a favourite team, he probably can't help it.....besides even if he is pro-Leaf, i think he maintains his professionalism quite well; better than most

what a sneaky snake, watch number 11 try and cover him so hard and then he just takes off at the right time and leaves number 11 in his dust trails

@chronicganja yea mark of a great player, they always seem to know how to get open even when teams try hard to cover them.

I honestly think that the ACC can be louder than the Bell Center, given the right circumstances of course...

Is it me or does Grabovski remind anybody of Berezin?
Scary actually if you look at them on the ice. They tuck in their jersey the same and they skate extremely similar.

Two things:
1. Federov was a center.
2. Yzerman played a stretch with the likes of Bob Errey and Darren McCarty, not what you would consider an offensive tandem.

Berezin to Thomas to beat Barrasso and the Senators in overtime in 2000. So, I guess he did pass. The video is on here.
