@Titinefer1129 maybe because Monk's music is too deep emotionally. No one paints like him. I'm really grateful of his genius and that we get to enjoy it and learn from it (not just in musical aspect).
40 years ago when i first listened to monk, i couldn't stand it. now, there's no other composer/pianist i would rather listen to. i needed to grow up musically and mentally before his genius became apparent to me. who plays other peoples compositions with as much heart and sincerity? tears in my eyes every time i hear "memories of you".
@OUtzky no such thing as a wrong note ...if it is on the piano it can and shoud be played we are just taught that there is bum notes or wrong combos ...but Monk proves you wrong everytime !!! HE MADE " BUM " NOTES Beautiful
He is a master who superseded everyone in the field! Long live the piano virtuoso whose dissonance cannot be duplicated by even the best of them! A full fledged STAR with a very dedicate wife who took care of him until the end! Brava Mrs Monk!
Wow, this guy is lifting the piano (1:04) without the slightest hint of a wink not to speak of playing a wrong note. That, dear friends, is true mastery. Body and soul!
@ALexKaffee You are so right...this is quite possibly the most beautiful piece of music I've ever heard in my life.It has the capacity to bring you to tears or just smile.
@Saxophonic I kind of understand your point but no other version of Round Midnight Sounds better than Thelonious Monk's Version because no play's it better or do you have a different version better than this?
@Saxophonic, I wont say you are wrong and I wont say you are right but I still maintain my stand. To me, Thelonious Monk is better regarded as a jazz composer rather than player. After Duke Ellington, Monk is next in terms of number of compositions. Monk is a genius in terms of jazz compositions and harmonic conceptions. .
I hope some people will not crucify me after reading this comment. Although Monk did a great job composing this lovely and beautiful piece, I prefer other pianists playing it instead of Monk himself.
@adeniji24 Monk is seriously difficult to listen to at first, his rigid and juttery way of playing piano is not easily understood. But the more you listen to him, the more you will realise that he is a true genius at work.
There is nothing to say...The music speaks for itself...We are so busy trying to see and hear where Monk is going nobody wants to stop to write a comment...
One of the most fascinating people in jazz. Respect.

Nobody has mastered timing better than this man here. Always seemingly late, yet ALWAYS on time.

this man looks like hes playing the piano for the first time, but that subtle hesitation adds to the whole feeling of this masterpiece

@2ffart Genius description of Monk's genius on piano! Striding, lyrical romanticism with a painful blister or cramp of a love possibly already lost.
