Linus im going to build a pc, but im not sure if i should go for a core i7 2600k or a core i7-960... can you please reply and tell me which one you think would be better
Nice rig........ but $3500????? are you guys effing kidding????? I hope , for your sake, that PT Barnum was wrong and there are really 25 born every minute............
@funni9 - It depends on what programs/functions you're using. Since there are next to no games out that use 6 cores AFAIK, I've seen the 2600k match or exceed the 990x in several games. I personally don't think it's worth the extra $600-700 for the 990x unless you know for sure why you'd need it.
It'd be better to wait for the LGA 1356/2011 models later this year IMO.
Linus, I hate to say this, but you need to respec. The 2600k can outperform a 990X (when overclocked slightly) and it OC's better too. DUAL GTX 590's??? Don't get me started on how bad they scale... NOBODY would need 24GB of RAM for a game.

@utjoseywales if you dont know or haven't already..price it against NCIX website with newegg.com. I've been a total 7,000.00 customer of theres since 2004 and they haven't done me wrong yet. cheers
@chronofusion Thanks for the reply! I went to Newegg (a longtime favorite merchant of mine and quite likely a lot of others here) and the price for the components (with only 2 or 3 substitutions/guesses on my part whether or not they were the exact same component) was only about $300-$400 less. To me, that's a very reasonable premium to pay to have a warranty and default OCing for a pre-built system. If not for the case (paint) and overuse of Corsiar components I would buy this rig.
@UltraVert 1 if People like Linus didnt document this type of builds than there would be a lot of people who wouldnt know what performance does every single component brings you, does that Motherboard really justify spending $450.00, lets see Linus review once system is build, besides if you're spending $700.00 on a GPU you would definatly want a well balance system, the previous R1 sold, and I think this one would do even better. but that may be just me..
most games run just fine on my quad core 9550, and a single gtx 280... if you have alot of money than by all means i think its a good idea to buy this... but for the average person most of the "new" parts out there are a waist of money... but thats just me
No offense, but even 12GB RAM is far faaaar enough, even for heavy video editing and 3D rendering. For me it seems like you're putting 24 gigs of RAM to make the "super edition" machine more expensive, but also more wanted by nerds with money that does not know anything about RAM usage.This is kind of sad. Also id love a silverstone FT02 unboxing/build, I know it's a little old but it's still the best cooling case, haf x is up there but it's gonna be loud compared to the FT02 which is so quiet!
People saying this is overkill etc and wont sell... They will sell. Do I agree on what's being put together? No. But someone will think they want and need that performance.
Linus meets Top Gear, the stuff you review is way beyond what 99% of PC owners can afford or are willing to part with. Can you do reviews on the Ford Focus instead of Ferrari's & Zonda's.
@UltraVert His job is probably centered around public relations, if he didn't make any money for NCIX there's no point in him being employed... and I'd guess the $450 motherboard is to keep the system well balanced. If you spend upwards of a certain price-point on a computer you're going to want it to do everything besides cook your dinner for you. I say keep doing what you do Linus, I enjoy your videos regardless, as long as they're tech related. :P
Doing a little research on your question revealed that actually I might have been wrong as things seem to have changed again. According to a roadmap recently released by Fujitsu probably both sockets will be released: Socket B2 / LGA1356 for "Sandy Bridge EN" CPUs and Socket R / LGA2011 for "Sandy Bridge EP/EX" CPUs ... but quite honestly, I don't really see the sense in that! Very confusing. What do you think?
Confusing is the correct word, after your comment I found several forums saying the same thing you did, that 1356 will never happen. The wiki page for socket 2011 says it's designed to supersede 1356, which isn't even out yet o.0. You were correct that 2011 will be the one with 4 memory channels. Doesn't make a lot of sense at this point.
Still exciting to say the least, not only between Intel and AMD, but with Nvidia's 'project Denver'.
Totally agree, but from a price/performance standpoint, it's a waste of money. 1356 will be out soon, that means quad channel ram and a lot more potential.
I mean unless you're trying to set some OC records right now, or build a crazy folding rig, then it just doesn't make sense.
Anyone can buy the parts, building it / modding it yourself is the most rewarding part imo, never been a fan of boutique builders.... that's all.
@UltraVert 1155 doesn't have enough PCI-e bandwidth to do two 16x slots, so the SLI version of this system would have to run the 590's at 8x each, which, unlike single gpu cards, would most likely degrade the performance. 1366 has more lanes available and can therefore run both at a full 16x.
@UltraVert Well, 1356 isn't out yet, so, it's not really an option. If you want to wait to have the latest and are always afraid of something newer coming out, you're never going to have a system.
@UltraVert I found that to be true.. and actually these videos concerns NCIX stuff, so it would be better if he would upload them on NCIXcom if he wanted to.. not LinusTechTips..
It's like posting a thread on a wrong section in forums.. :P
@UltraVert wat u have to take into consideration is that its nearly the end of the first "quarter" of the year (in business language) which means that there arent any products being brought out right now, he'll probebly do more unboxings/reviews in the next quarter which is like late april/may time :-)
Reminds me of the fact that some japanese radiation has arrived here in Denmark, wich is in Europe.. Seems like they might have problems with the radiation for sure.?!
Shut down the damn plant and let the companies, in the surrounding area stay put.! I dunno for sure but im guessing that the hardware companies is going to put up the prices, after what happened in Japan anaway.... U know, it might have an effect on the japanese hardware market... :|
@UltraVert I agree. I thought Linus was best when he was doing honest reviews, not getting buttered up by companies to show off their product. Shame on you Linus!
@UltraVert well if you think that way then you will never get new tech. Also you don't have to watch his sales videos, just keep in mind that this is what keeps his review videos in business.
@UltraVert Keep in mind that running this, as well as the ncix com, channel is part of linus job. His employers may tell him to be a salesman from time to time, but it's not his fault. Please don't hate on linus for doing his job.
@UltraVert I agree with you, ill was going to upgrade my i7 rig to a 980x since they have droped so much in price, but since socket 2011 is coming soon, (ironically in year 2011), im gonna hold off and see what comes out, although any 1366 system is certainly no lightweight.
Notice that I said 1366 will be a generation behind in less than a year, I didn't say it was behind right now... so obviously I'm not talking about 1155.
@UltraVert funny, i would never say that 980x is a fail choice against any 1366 socket. The cooling solution however is in my opinion. Never the less, if Linus has to do these videos from time to time in order to keep the great unboxings reviews etc. comming, i say go for it.
Just wanted to put this out there for those who HAVENT noticed it just yet. (i thought it was cooled as it was the first ive ever seen like this) .. At the TOP of this page, to the left of the title, there is a "light switch".. click it :)
@RamoneTalarico I run a 980X with 16GB 1600MHz DDR3 and the other day I was rendering some video with Vegas (64-bit) whilst watching TV with Media Center and Vegas crashed cos it ran out of memory. Just saying.

Finally! A budget gaming system to play indie games! :D
habowh43 11 months ago
I liked this channel a lot more when you just did reviews, not so much now that you're a salesman....
Also, I don't really get using a $450 dollar X58 MB when 1366 will be a generation behind in less than a year.
Flame all you want... I just don't get it.
UltraVert 11 months ago 48
@UltraVert His job is probably centered around public relations, if he didn't make any money for NCIX there's no point in him being employed... and I'd guess the $450 motherboard is to keep the system well balanced. If you spend upwards of a certain price-point on a computer you're going to want it to do everything besides cook your dinner for you. I say keep doing what you do Linus, I enjoy your videos regardless, as long as they're tech related. :P
dezeya2k7 11 months ago
@UltraVert
Because, LGA 1155 doesn't support QUAD SLI, the X58s do. If people wanted another 590, they could QUAD SLI it.
NewtypeDestroyer 11 months ago
@NewtypeDestroyer
1356 will support quad channel ram... and no doubt will the high end boards do quad sli / quadfire
UltraVert 11 months ago
@UltraVert
S1356 is a stillbirth never to be released. S2011 is what you're aiming at.
YTmurphy 11 months ago
@YTmurphy
ah.. you're right, learn something new everyday..
I wonder why they scrapped it? Can't find any official word from Intel.
UltraVert 11 months ago
@UltraVert
YTmurphy 11 months ago
@YTmurphy
UltraVert 11 months ago
@UltraVert the 1366 platform is awesome and will be for along time to come
AwayToSlay 11 months ago
@AwayToSlay
Totally agree, but from a price/performance standpoint, it's a waste of money. 1356 will be out soon, that means quad channel ram and a lot more potential.
I mean unless you're trying to set some OC records right now, or build a crazy folding rig, then it just doesn't make sense.
Anyone can buy the parts, building it / modding it yourself is the most rewarding part imo, never been a fan of boutique builders.... that's all.
UltraVert 11 months ago
@UltraVert 1155 doesn't have enough PCI-e bandwidth to do two 16x slots, so the SLI version of this system would have to run the 590's at 8x each, which, unlike single gpu cards, would most likely degrade the performance. 1366 has more lanes available and can therefore run both at a full 16x.
bmocyber 11 months ago
@bmocyber
I didn't mean to mislead, I was referring to 1356.
UltraVert 11 months ago
@UltraVert Well, 1356 isn't out yet, so, it's not really an option. If you want to wait to have the latest and are always afraid of something newer coming out, you're never going to have a system.
bmocyber 11 months ago
@bmocyber
Bah... I never said anything to that effect, re-read it.
UltraVert 11 months ago
@UltraVert I found that to be true.. and actually these videos concerns NCIX stuff, so it would be better if he would upload them on NCIXcom if he wanted to.. not LinusTechTips..
It's like posting a thread on a wrong section in forums.. :P
othman626 11 months ago
@UltraVert With Intel, everything is outdated in a month. It's Intel's way of saying FUCK YOU, and having to go buy a new mobo.
AmphibiousKitty 11 months ago
@UltraVert wat u have to take into consideration is that its nearly the end of the first "quarter" of the year (in business language) which means that there arent any products being brought out right now, he'll probebly do more unboxings/reviews in the next quarter which is like late april/may time :-)

@MrMikeydude10

Piegoodman 11 months ago
@UltraVert well if you think that way then you will never get new tech. Also you don't have to watch his sales videos, just keep in mind that this is what keeps his review videos in business.
EradicationStation 11 months ago
@UltraVert Keep in mind that running this, as well as the ncix com, channel is part of linus job. His employers may tell him to be a salesman from time to time, but it's not his fault. Please don't hate on linus for doing his job.
riknos3289 11 months ago
@UltraVert I agree with you, ill was going to upgrade my i7 rig to a 980x since they have droped so much in price, but since socket 2011 is coming soon, (ironically in year 2011), im gonna hold off and see what comes out, although any 1366 system is certainly no lightweight.
l2Bubble 11 months ago
@l2Bubble
Agreed, although you might consider a used 980x once the new sockets come out. Some amazing deals will be had on OC.net, ebay etc....
UltraVert 11 months ago
@UltraVert LGA1366 offers triple channel RAM, 32 lanes of PCI express 2.0 and quad and six core CPUs.
LGA1155 has dual channel RAM, only 16 lanes of PCI Express 2.0 and offers dual and quad core CPUs.
andyman210 11 months ago
@andyman210
Notice that I said 1366 will be a generation behind in less than a year, I didn't say it was behind right now... so obviously I'm not talking about 1155.
UltraVert 11 months ago
@UltraVert funny, i would never say that 980x is a fail choice against any 1366 socket. The cooling solution however is in my opinion. Never the less, if Linus has to do these videos from time to time in order to keep the great unboxings reviews etc. comming, i say go for it.

@RamoneTalarico I run a 980X with 16GB 1600MHz DDR3 and the other day I was rendering some video with Vegas (64-bit) whilst watching TV with Media Center and Vegas crashed cos it ran out of memory. Just saying.
