I have the latest version and I face this problem. Since window media and other video players don't work, VLC is only option for me. This is so frustrating.
i had a problem with choppy video on my new Asus G73JH with media player and also with Bs Player, so i found out for Splayer and my video plays perfectly...i would also reccommend Tune up utitlities and ccleaner!!!
This is a consistent problem across many correctly encoded videos. These videos play fine on my old Dell (in VLC) and on my PS3. So, encoding is not the issue.
With my Acer: lot's of stuff moving on screen == VLC drops frames. Haven't tried KMP but all play fine in WindowsMediaPlayer. So, it is a VLC&AcerAspire issue.
Encode the video properly. My main laptop at the moment only has a single core processor and I can watch 1080P movies as long as it's in the right file type, (MKV).
Use KMP player because it's much more stable than VLC and packs a bigger punch as a freeware file player.
I encountered the known issue that with the earlier graphics driver that the machine ships with. The CPU would occasionally peg at 100% (even though Windows task manager showed no userland process burning that much suggesting a kernel issue). So I upgraded to VGA_Intel_7.15.10.1752_Vistax86_A which is still the most recent graphics driver Acer have released. This fixed that problem.

I've found that massively increasing VLC's input buffer
( Tools->Preferences->Show Settings:All->Input/Codecs->Access Modules->File->Caching value in ms: 5000 )
stops the picture from breaking up into blocks (i.e. VLC having to restart parsing the stream) but I still get many dropped frames - where the video stops for quarter of a second every few seconds.

I have choppy and slow frames with matroska encoded video. They play, but pause for 3 seconds in interval.

Not VLC OR Not AcerAspire ... then it's all good!
