When WILS-AM gave up the ghost on a a fully staffed 24/7 facility, it went with an reel--deck automation system controlled by a DOS based computer. The owners invested $100K for this monstrosity in 1983. Now, my laptop can do so much more for less than a grand.
Both interesting...and cause for reflection. Back...I mean BACK in 1960 Storz top 40 WQAM in Miami tried operating with a Schafer Automation system ( yes, a bit less sophisticated than 6KY's). My second day on the air, and alone in the control room...lighting hit the building & all the reels etc. went into rewind-on the air. I followed up with 15 minutes talking on air to listeners on the phone before an engineer re set everything. Baptism under fie indeed.
This Schafer 903E was purchased at the 1976 NAB show in Chicago. It added two days of memory in addition to the Schafer 903 which I designed in 1972.
The Teac decks were PB720 without the playback electronics.
