let me tell you she was the best voice ever and i've heard many.......take your Streisand's and Diana Ross's but this girl had the most unique voice ever.....too bad she went so soon.....
I got to see the Carpenters four times in Las Vegas at the Riviera Hotel in 73 and 74; I had never heard any voice as beautiful as hers, and I doubt that I ever will. Not to mention Richard, with perfect arrangements and at the end of one midnight performance, a rendition of a piece called the Warsaw Concerto. What a Voice, but what a Team!!
Yes this was one of my favorites from the boxed set. I loved the instrumental ending to this working track - actually this version has just a slight bit more edge all the way through I thought. Hard to say if this should have been the 1st single with the album release vs "Rainy Days" - or why they just didn't release this track from the Tan album too. So amazing!
I remember my older sister who was like 13 years old baking cookies on a rainy Saturday and she comforted me because we couldn't go the park. I have many fond memories like these, but the Carpenters music was always in the background.
@RetardedShit1 I will agree with the dislikes only because I wanted more Karen and this song is too short, when I first heard it on cd and didn't know the length, I was like WTF? The world needs more of Richard's greatness and Karen's voice and their simplicity of music.
I .......would like to beg your indulgence here. I KNOW....you would not be here...except for HER. CAN I just say that in 1983.....the music world did NOT lose a singer. The WHOLE WORLD lost a woman...........who had a voice that was ONE IN A MILLION. She will never be duplicated, nor equaled....she is JUST KAREN. I know you loved her....as did I. Probably the greatest female singing voice EVER. I love you Karen.
ABC network made an upbeat disco version of the song, with rewritten lyrics, to reflect the network starting to gain momentum by the 1976-77 TV season.

A totally "awesome" song indeed that has an entrancing and mesmerizing quality and ambiance. It's certainly one of my very favorites. Had they released it for top 40 airplay I have No doubt it would've made the top 5 anyway. It also clearly exemplifies the class and distinction of their musical talent, musicianship and ingenious arranging- a virtual sonic rainbow. Karen's voice was Incredible and unlike any other. She was also an Outstanding drummer too!
She has voice from HEAVEN!!!!!!!!!! She was a beautiful angel!!! I just hate that she had to suffer with an eating disorder. Her beautiful voice just calms me!!!!!!! I miss her too, thank God we have her music to listen to!!!!

I think I see now, about Richard's remixing. I had bought the big CD collection they put out, 'From the Top' because by then my vinyl was wearing out. I kept remembering it sounded different, like her mic was too crisp or something. Just, something was off, I kept thinking. But this song illustrates it. It sounds like he even reverbed her vocals or something compared to the album copy of the song which is also posted on YT. WTF? He thought he could make it better?
Love the tape. Sounds like she's working out the details. That's what it took. Practice and more practice. That's one thing Richard, Karen and the others involved did, went for perfection. Thanks for posting.
The world was truly blessed by an angel with Karen Carpenter. She has the most beautiful voice I have ever heard. Twenty-seven years after her death, I still mourn for her. While I have many regrets in life, I will always regret that I never got to see her perform in person. I was a child when she passed away and never had the opportunity. I miss her. Thanks for sharing this song. It is one of my favorites.
classic arrangement, flawless voice, My life is BETTER because Karen taught me to live everyday to the fullest and NOT judge anyone.....Happy New YEAR EVERYONE!!!
the hit. it should have been the biggest hit. Paul W., Karen, Richard, A&M records, Herb Albert. never ever will there be such a combination of talent. and yes too (Dakers11 post) Bless the Beasts and the Children. and all of the late Karen recordings. every recording. re-release. on radio. to show all these copy-dance-copy-girl singers. what is was to have music. a voice. and talent. like everything that Karen touched.
I was in a choir that went to the International Music Festival in Seifeldt, Austria. We sang this song -- I have such wonderful memories of that trip. Our choir was voted the best choir of the festival.
This is the best song Karen ever did. More people should take the time to really listen to this song. You will notice that no one has ever done it since!!!!
@rajtennis its her vulnerable and pensive reading at the bridge section that reveals a lonely and troubled soul in search of salvation. Sadly, the music wasn't enough for her, though it is ours to enjoy and marvel at.
Lonliness is a person's worse enemy and having someone to turn to is a gem in one's life .. not too many people take the time to care. Excellent song and so expressive of ones feelings.
According to the new book, "Little Girl Blue," Karen wanted this to be the first single released from this album. But when songwriters Paul Williams & Roger Nichols heard the Carpenters' version of their other song "Rainy Days & Mondays," they begged them to release "Rainy Days" instead. Paul Williams points out that even though many artists have recorded "Let Me Be the One," nobody has ever turned it into a hit. But my feeling is that this would have been a Top 10 success back in 1971.
@nealadams70 Maybe because regular people are afraid to talk to them and feel intimidated by their perceived "image". I wish I had know Karen. She was so cool. I miss her a lot.

@PetClarkie I haven't heard of that release, but I'll look out for it. With Jack Jones, I've only got compilations. (I'm in England, BTW.) Jack Jones- he was ubiquitous in the 60s and 70s, such is fashion.

the reason no one can duplicate her voice is because she knew she had perfect-pitch and an incredible range and she consciously stylized her voice, shaping her notes, phrasing, etc. uniquely, in addition her brother knew her voice too and exploited it to the optimum by dramatic octave drops into her low alto range. this was no mistake--the two were musical genuises, he still is.

Richard and Karen were true pro's,however the real treat is at the end of the track with Karens banter, word is she had a fantastic sense of humour,as evident in t.v. specials.
This is an alternate take from the 4 CD set issued in 1991. I like it better than the original! It really shows Karen's personality, plus the sound quality blows me away. Her voice is amazing. If I could sing (and I can't) for just one hour, I'd pick her voice.
an angelic voice - absolutely untouchable - an angel on earth her music is beautiful and timeless an angel in heaven god i wish you were still around to show these youngsters how to sing
@LAnative4evr she was beautiful, in every sense of the word. she had her demons, which eventually killed her, but her truly angelic voice was a gift from God, sent to us at a time when we as a nation needed a soothing, smooth, effortless voice to calm us from the turbulent 60's. She was a meteor, shining on this earth for only a short time; the sadness wells up within us, who apreciate her talent, when we realize just how short her stay on this earth was, and how many more songs were in her.
I love this song so much Karen Carpenter's voice is so beautiful. The voice of an angel Karen is sorely missed but The Carpenters songs will live on forever.
***Sigh......**** I'm in heaven..... I love this song so very much!! It is, by far - my favorite Carpenters song. Thanks so much for this. I've been looking everywhere for it!
This is absolutely my most-favorite Carpenters song..... of course, I have a Top 15 list of favorites by the Carpenters. I think it's because it wasn't over-played like their other #1 hits, so when I DO hear it, I love it even more! Thanks so much for posting this!
@kmoots THis is my absolute FAVORITE also, it reflects what american music is all about and we should be proud that we had such awonderful song with such wonderful songstress. We all miss you Karen!

Thank YOU to Chicpizz209 for this gem.

As a premier lead female vocalist,
KAREN must have been in seventh heaven;
in a studio, laying down her vocals.
OMG with all of those beautiful strings,
RICHARD's amazing piano work, those
"signature oboe or English horn lines,
harps, French Horns, smooth brass, woodwinds, plus outstanding guitar and bass playing....WOW!
THEY had it GOIN' ON FOR REAL
mysterytrax 2 years ago
John Lennon himself complimented on her voice, and she didn't take him seriously! Unbelievable!

an angelic voice - absolutely untouchable - an angel on earth her music is beautiful and timeless an angel in heaven god i wish you were still around to show these youngsters how to sing

My favorite by the Carpenter's - although it never made it to No. 1... Karen's voice can never be duplicated, nor should anyone aspire to copy her.
She will always be "the voice of an angel," as so many others have described, and it fits... perfectly. We miss her so much.
LAnative4evr 3 years ago 33
@LAnative4evr she was beautiful, in every sense of the word. she had her demons, which eventually killed her, but her truly angelic voice was a gift from God, sent to us at a time when we as a nation needed a soothing, smooth, effortless voice to calm us from the turbulent 60's. She was a meteor, shining on this earth for only a short time; the sadness wells up within us, who apreciate her talent, when we realize just how short her stay on this earth was, and how many more songs were in her.

@radioham67 You are so right. Her voice was perfection. She was an angel.

Once, this lovely "troubador" sang out in her
heavenly voice; to "Bless The Beast and the
Children", give them shelter from the storm...
keep them safe.... keep them warm. For all we know and hope, is that she has THAT peace and
warmth NOW. I still have it, everytime I hear her sing. RIP gentle ANGEL.
THANKS to Chicpizz209 for sharing such a GIFT with all of us.

This is absolutely my most-favorite Carpenters song..... of course, I have a Top 15 list of favorites by the Carpenters. I think it's because it wasn't over-played like their other #1 hits, so when I DO hear it, I love it even more! Thanks so much for posting this!
