Ryan Howard is a very good player, but he's not in Schmidt's league (yet). Howard still strikes out too much, way more than Schmidt, and Schmidt walked way more than Howard does. Plus, 48 homers in the steroid era ain't 48 homers in 1980. Schmidt was also a multiple Gold Glove winner at third base.
