A French writer's book put on sale recently has disclosed another side, including opportunism and tricks, of the Dalai Lama deified by some Western politicians and armchair pundits.
Maxime Vivas's new book "Not So 'Zen': The Hidden Side Of The Dalai Lama" hit the shelves of bookstores and online retailers Thursday, days after the Dalai Lama himself held a three-day public conference in the southern French city Toulouse.
Facts and views in the 130-page French-language book refute the long-time self-beatification of the Dalai Lama.
"Based on the word of the Dalai Lama in his transcribed memoirs and also in his speeches during his trips abroad, Maxime Vivas highlights opportunism, omissions, tricks, and lies of a man and his kingdom," the publisher Max Milo Editions said in a press kit.
"In a plea for secularism, the author raises the question of what would be a 'Free Tibet' led by a recalcitrant prophet in front of science and freedom of worship," the publisher said, while presenting a briefing of a feudal system decades ago under the Dalai Lama and the free primary education system in today's Tibet that is significantly bringing down the illiteracy rate.
"The trend in France is mostly to edit mass books praising the Dalai Lama. Writing against the Dalai Lama or breaking his image is akin to smearing the portraits of Nelson Mandela or Mahatma Gandhi, the idols which we can't touch," Vivas told Xinhua.
Confusion-and-curiosity-driven, Vivas conducted a truth-seeking trip to Tibet in the summer of 2010 with several other French journalists.
He found there is a modern Tibet prospering with free prayers in temples and monasteries and even on the streets, and Tibetan-written signs are everywhere.
"What I saw in Tibet is not like what I read from the French press and books," he said.
To clarify the contradiction of the real Tibet he witnessed and the one in the Dalai Lama's propaganda and most Western reports, Vivas read numerous documents, including studies of French parliamentarians, and researched opinions from various angles
The book with the Dalai Lama's photo on the cover is now on the bookshelves of Fnac, the largest retailer of cultural and electronic products in France, and in the book category of U.S.-based Amazon.com, the world's largest online retailer.
There have been many comments about the book on the Internet.
Some pointed out the double status of the Dalai Lama mixing political with religious faces.
"However the truth is, he is not actually the person he appears to be. His actions have not always been in accordance with his message of peace, tolerance and compassion..." a netizen named "Caz Namyaw" commented.
The book also has drawn attention from the French media including TV5, bfm radio and France info, among others.
Showing footage of a regional TV channel's interview on the book, Vivas pointed out several illogical arguments posed by some French media, which he said questioned him on the basis of prejudgment rather than the content of his book.
Vivas also said he didn't believe in the Dalai Lama's March announcement of handing over political power because he since met U.S. President Barack Obama at the White House in July.
Unwilling to lose the privileges they enjoyed in the feudal serfdom society of old Tibet, some lamas have been the initiators of riots or other violent incidents in the region, according to a Tibetologist, who lived and worked in Tibet for 26 years.
"Lama in Tibetan language means a person with morals and cultivation. In average people's eyes, lamas should just chant, abide by religious vows and promote Buddhism, the essence of which is being nice to others," said the Tibetologist Liu Wei at an interview with Xinhuanet Friday.
Those who chant and cultivate themselves in accordance with Buddhist doctrines are real lamas, said Liu. "However, those who break the law and do things that have nothing to do with Buddhism should not be considered monks at all."
Liu witnessed three major riots in Tibet in 1987 to 1989 and other cases in the region. He said all those riots were initiated by lamas or people dressing lama robes.
Some so-called "religious figures" exiling in foreign countries are unwilling to lose the privileges they boasted before. Therefore, they kept making violence due to the instigation by home and abroad separatists and foreign politicians, Liu put
"What they did was completely contrary to their religious doctrines," Liu stressed.
"As long as we understand the history of Tibet, the background of Tibetan Buddhism and that religious groups in the region enjoyed absolute power in the past, it will be easier to understand that why lamas always took the lead in each riot in Tibet," said Liu.
"Old Tibet was a society characterized by the merging of politics and religion, in which monasteries enjoyed the greatest power and interest among the three powerful forces," he said. "The most powerful serf owner was the Dalai Lama, who was both the most powerful political leader and the highest religious head."
Under statistics, there were 477 officials in old Tibet in 1959, among whom 266 were monks. That means upper-layer lamas, especially lamas at a certain level, enjoyed certain privileges. That was mainly because in old Tibet big monasteries were not only for religious events. Upper-layer lamas had their own manors, serfs and slaves, and some even had their own judicial rights and armed forces.
"For example, some big monasteries, like the Drepung Monastery, had their own prisons and they put people into prison if they did something wrong. Those were kind of like religious courts."
Therefore, for centuries, the political center in old Tibet was the three biggest monasteries -- Sera Monastery, Ganden Monastery and Drepung Monastery. As the religious as well as political center in old Tibet, they somehow dominated the fate of Tibet.
Take the Drepung Monastery for an example. A social survey record shows the monastery possessed 185 manors, more than 300 prairies and 10, 000 serfs. Moreover, each upper-layer lama in the monastery had a slave.
There was one lama who had 10 younger lamas serving him. According to his disciples' indiction during the democratic reform in Tibet in 1959, he raped more than 1,000 women in villages near the monastery from in 35 years. When he was in charge of a monastery subordinate to the Drepung monastery, he raped all the women working on the manor that affiliated with it.
The social survey shows there were few records of the evils deeds lamas did. On the contrary, most of them were covered with too much glory. The abolishment of serfdom was to deprive the privileges of serf owners. And the biggest serf owners were the upper-layer lama and the highest lama was the Dalai Lama.
@TheSaImonfan "there were few records of the evils deeds lamas did"
Then how do you know they really happened. Maybe he is fabricating most of it.
In any case it sounds an awful lot like China today. They control the media and erase all records they don't like. Do you realise many younger Chinese don't know about Tianaman square. Of those that do, many believe it is all western lies. Of course we have all seen the video evidence and many saw it live, some were even there to see it.
"However, the Chinese government still needs to do more to expose the true nature of the political and religious regime of Old Tibet," said Liu.
"In my opinion, the political foundation for such regime has not been completely abolished, that is why some religious forces with political purposes, at home and abroad, are growing stronger."
arafel1964 makes a good point child slavery (2 years ago).
I don’t know if child slavery still a problem in China but I do know that China supports Child slavery in the rest of the world. They support dictatorships that use it and buy goods produced by slave children. China has long been condemned for this but still it goes on.
Lol and you don't think the goods america buys from poor nations are made from child slaves? USA is ten times worse in that regard too because a far number of americans are wealthy and buy cheap goods than chinese people who do that.
PART 2 Just western propaganda? NO. How do I know? Because so many Chinese feld have to the west and I know many of them. Safe in the west, they are free to talk about their experiences in China. Some, are now overtly proud that China has progressed economically in recent time. But, none are looking to go back. They wouldn't dream of it. Why do you suppose that is? Are you in the west? If so, why are you still here. Talk is cheap, actions speak louder. If it's so great go back there. Too scared?
@StormyWeather2012 Of course, you only get anti-establishment views from dissidents. Have you every considered views of supporters? When there are supporters, you guys dismissed them as being brainwashed straight away, without taking into account their opinions. Typical hubris
@StormyWeather2012 First and foremost, I am not a Chinese. There are also Western dissidents are on-the-run and/or persecuted by the West. Precisely, when I look into the China's history, I'm perplexed how is Tibet considered a country since she was a province since the Qing dynasty. Must all Tibetans suffer and be deprived of China's (a nation of 56 ethnic groups) development, just because of some pro-independence groups? Are they true voices of Tibetans? Enlighten me please.
How will we ever know what the Tibetans would have choosen for themselves now?
They were never given the chance to choose their own way because China invaded and took over.
Yes, during the Qing Tibet was somewhat under the control of China, it was a vassal state of China; a vassal state does not really belong to the controling country. For the first half of the 20th century it was free and during the Ming it was free and not a part of China. Now read part 2
@StormyWeather2012 P1 Exactly, that is my point. Since we do not know the true voice of the Tibetans, how can you ascertain that their voice resonates with those of foreign pro-independence groups? Tibetans are not vassals, but instead members of the 56 ethnic group family which is China. China doesn't only equal to Han, but also comprise of other groups such as the Manchus, Mongol, Tibetans, Hmongs, Thais etc. It is such ethnic diversity which made the country so beautiful.
@StormyWeather2012 Tibet and Mongolia was consolidated into the Qing empire under the reign of Kangxi, and fought together against common enemies such as the Gurkhas, Dzungars, as well as imperialist forces such as Russians, British and Japanese. After the fall of the Qing in the 20th century, many parts of China were controlled by warlords. You may interpret it as independence, IMHO I see them as ambitious warlords and rouge provinces trying to capitalize on a weak China.
@hellopanda369 "Tibet and Mongolia was consolidated into the Qing"
But they were not made a part of China. They were not pronvinces of China. They were protectorates which is pretty much a Vassal state. They assisted China in its wars and in return they received protection. But they still had self determination for those things that did not affect China's. This was only because China was stronger. Vassals are never happy with the arrangement - it is forced on them.
@hellopanda369 And by the same reasoning modern day China is like a vicious warlord capitalizing on Tibet in time of weakness. A weakness that probably would not be and they not been a vassal of Qing China. They broke away as soon as they could but the Qing still had a stronger army and invaded again. The ROC removed the army but then the PROC invaded again. No wonder the country was in a bad state; China hasn't given them a chance to advance on their own. Shame on China.
@StormyWeather2012 I wonder where you got your information from but ROC recognizes Tibet as part of China. You should open your mind and accept that multiculturalism has become a norm in 21st century. Just because China has 56 ethnic groups, it doesn't breaking up into 56 different sovereign states. Can you please move on, the last Chinese Civil War ended more than 50 years ago, while Irish Republican Army is still active as of today.
@StormyWeather2012 British-India and CIA had a well-documented role in Tibet. How is China and Tibet in a bad state when literacy, infrastructure, life expectancy and GDP per capital improved since 1950s? And China is on her way to regain their status as a superpower? I guess maybe it is bad for you because you are envious and hope the country will be splintered into pieces.
@StormyWeather2012 And it is an obvious double standard when India occupied the region of South Tibet, Arunachal Pradesh. I don't see why you guys aren't protesting for the independence of South Tibet. Maybe you guys are envious of China's development, and India does not pose much of a threat. Or maybe you guys just don't bother to read up and take whatever information that is presented you as face value. PS. I am not a Chinese
@StormyWeather2012 Tibet declared independence, spurred by British imperialists, Manchuria & Taiwan (Jap imperialists), and Mongolia (Soviet imperialists). All tried to capitalize on a China weakened by warlords, civil unrest and imperialist powers. So after WW2 and the Civil War, is it an offense for China to consolidate the country again? It is the century of humiliation and now, when she is regaining her superpower status, the West is again, trying to undermine China. IMHO
@hellopanda369 Chinese Civil War is hardly surprising. The whole country is really just a collection of conquered kingdoms some of which became provinces and other just protectorates. So of course, because grudges over sovereignty last for centuries, they all revolt when the opportunity presents. It will likely happen again one day when China weakens once more - which it likely will because of the growing cancers within it (the conquered lands and the hatred that generates).
A colony may or may not be set up in a vassal state. A colony may also be set up outside a vassal state. A colony is more likely to be set up when the vassal is so far away that cannot be monitored directly.
So Hong Kong and Indian are widely seen as being a part of the British Empire, but they were not a part of Britain.
The Falkland islands though are a part of britain.
The Falkland islands are part a part of Britain because they were unknown to the Argentinians. If my memory serves correctly the Dutch were the first to spot the islands and then the British. The French set up a colony in East Falklands in 1764 and the English set one up in the West in 1765 to 1766. Neither new of the other colony at first.
Spain acquired the French colony and there were conflicts with the British.
In 1833 the British returned to the Falklands and have been there ever since. A proper colony was founded in 1840.
The Argentinians think it is theirs because the think or claim it should be theirs because the Spanish once had a colony on the islands and Argentina was once a Spanish colony - Rubbish argument - that would mean all former Spanish colonies now belong to Argentina.
If Tibet had been unoccupied, China could claim it, but it wasn't unoccupied.
cctv=communist china tv.what else can we expect them to say, next episode is "tibet set to become world's next super power because of china", mother fucking chinese communist party
Big deal Tibet had Slaves, What do you expect the Dalai Lama monks pray all day. Who going to feed and shelter the devil Dalai Lama and the Royal ruling Class. Please Give back Tibet to the Devil Dalai Lama, and maybe i can own slaves serfs too, I would buy hot looking Tibet girls and bang them, and say Dalai Lama say you are property and bend over.
@AC2GO777 You are sooooo right. Speak the truth, 38-year-old-man-who-can't-get-any-ass-bc-ur-2-ugly. Hey did you know there are more slaves right now than ever before? Yes you probably did, you sick freak. You probably take trips to Cambodia or Africa and fuck 6 year olds for pleasure or maybe you fuck ur daughter. Regardless a hundred years ago, every nation had slavery. And Tibetan Buddhist monks like the Dalai Lama never approved of it (read the scriptures), only the corrupt businessmen did.
@AC2GO777 You're a fucking idiot bc I'm not Tibetan. I just use my brain to come to my conclusions. No wonder why the world is so fucked up: there are dumb fucking people like you who walk around spewing retarded crap. You probably live in China and have so much pollution in that pint-sized brain of yours that you can't think correctly you vacuous-minded prick.
p.s. Your mom is a better candidate since she's probably retarded. Or maybe she fucked a monkey. Either way, your dumbass came out
@tek510 I not from China etiher ask your slut MoM, good to know my little bastard son is racists agaist chinese people too. How is your Mom should iI fuck here ass again so you can have another bastard brother of sister you can fuck with.
@tek510 I just took a shit in the tolet and wipe my ass. It reminded me how your slut mom must felt when you were born in the tolet. Glad she did not flush you down the drain.
Professors at American universities that have programs in Tibetan will tell you the same things as this video. It's not just Chinese propaganda. Tibet currently has one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Some 200,000 Tibetan herders were recently provided with housing by the Chinese government, and there is a growing middle class of Tibetans.
It's very difficult for the Chinese to provide developmental services, such as education, to constantly moving herders. So in this sense, stability in itself is an amenity. Although the transition may be difficult for some of them, many have expressed that they want their children to be educated, so that they will have other opportunities in addition to being herders. I'm sure it was difficult for other native groups such, as the Maori, to make such a transition as well.
Tibetans have a long history of warfare between sects and monasteries as well. Native Americans had their own tribal wars.
Part of the development process should involve the building of schools and hospitals in those middle of nowhere places. The CCP increasingly encourages Chinese college students to go work in the western provinces, but it is difficult for them, so many go but don't stay. Want to help them? Go teach English in Tibet. Maybe I will some day.
This presentation makes the Chinese government look like friendly open-minded humanitarians which seems dubious to me. CCTV = China Central Television. The Chinese government's propagandistic whitewash aside though, I found this to be a fairly informative look into the history of a less publicly appealing side of Tibet's upper classes; one that's often unknown or avoided in the west. Maybe someday a comprehensive history can be written without anybody having to suck up to one side or the other.
The Communists use this history as propaganda to prop up their regime. But, the Chinese Communists themselves have enslaved their people as well. Be it Capitalism or Socialism, civilization is always masters and slaves.
@FalunGongIsAmazing You Falun Gong motherfucka are going to burn IN HELL, I am glad the commies are persecuting your brainwashing cult hahahaha, EVERYONE, Youtube THIS: Tibet: The Truth (A Political History), ; TRUE HISTORY OF FEUDAL SERFDOM IN TIBET BEFORE COMMUNIST CHINA,
everywere the priest are parasite and bring the hell with them! the inka priests, middle ages and still untill today the moslem "priests" so let them taste there own myths about hell, for real! when will justice be served?
Thank =fully, the landlords got what they deserved. Just because China did cruel things doesn't give Tibet an excuse especially since they claim to be enlightened.
@TheGenocideKing Those defending serfdom are ignorant turds. Real buddhists don't enslave other human beings. What comes around, goes around. The DL is the best living proof of karma, having be exiled from home and begging money from the West.
@ivantide That's subjective. But, at least you're civil, unlike the other idiot that responded. I wasn't talking about serfdom, I was talking about the positive portrait Mao Zedong hence the red guard reference.
I think there is certain truth in this material. Any system that combines politics and religion is oppressive. Inquisition is a very good example.
Tibetan monks conned the peasants using the karma story, saying the latter had to suffer becos they had commited sins in their previous lives!
India & USA supported Dalai Lama becos they have political agenda, just like US had supported Iraq to fight Iran, then they themselves had to topple Sadam becos they finally realised they had created a monster!
Free Easter European and American slaves!!! High usuries, broken secret governmnets, and no jobs, health care, education, and pension for Eastern Europeans and Americans but plenty of money to operate and fund media disinformation, voters fraud, and student democracy movements in support of foreign opposing political parties to hate, cheat, murder, loot, toruture, steal, and traffic narcotics under the pretexts of WMD/war on terror, human rights, and democrcay.
@arafel1964 not to mention the 80 million who were killed for the CCP to establish and consolidate their power over China and the occupied territories. Tibet's current government in exile forbids such barbarism as serfddom anyways.
@RogerwilcoFoxtrot ; Tibet was not a paradise but that was no country in that time and it was the current Dalai Lama who ended serfdom. Unfortenately those who support CCP close their eyes for what CCP has done and the things that happened in their own culture. Search here for ´death with a 1000 cuts´ and Chinese animalcruelty
I think I, seeing the responses, annoy the owner of this vid with these true comments, lol
@arafel1964 wheres your proof? Eunuchs? do you even know what that means??? lmao maybe in the imperial days but certainly not in communist China. Slavery in China is illegal and there are no slaves or child slaves there idiot, communism is horrible, but not as horrible as Tibet was in its heyday, with 80% serfs who are born into it and 20% nobilities who own them. Go educate your self kid. at least in China they get paid, no matter how little it is.
@arafel1964 Are you fucking stupid? Slavery in China is ILLEGAL. They FREED all Tibetan slaves after the reunified with Tibet. And eunuchs? stop talking over 100 years ago.
@SHUTUPNOOB654 ; There were no slaves in Tibet but serfs and the first thing the current HHDL did was abandon the system. And do a search here on ´Chinese childslavery´ or try ´children dying rooms´.
@arafel1964 Fool. Are you really that ignorant to believe Tibet was a Shangrila? idiot. The Dalai had thousands of personal slaves. Serfs were just 1 problem. And btw, China doesn't have Child slaves. China actually abolished slavery in China, and Abolished slavery in Tibet when they reunified. The Dalai government never abandoned his system, idiot. He was forced to abandon it when China reunified, but then he tried to do the 1959 revolt, which failed. Then he runs away. Learn, kido.
Story of the Tsering is fiction. Nobody does things for nothing in this world unless the person is crazy. Why his landlord cut his arm, for no reason. Doesnt this sound little bit odd?
This is certainly Chinese propoganda, but the description of Tibet is highly accurate. Yes, it does sound odd, but only if you don't understand the way Tibetan Buddhism was practiced. The higher castes considered themselves enlightened and divinely blessed, and considered the peasantry as lower beings, deserving of no property, rights or mercy. It was also a tyrannical system of power and wealtn.
(cont) You need to understand that the Dalai Lama is an instrument of foreign interests, used highly effectively in propaganda for political ends. Google 'Dalai Lama + CIA', and do your own research on how Tibet really was, don't fall for Hollywood actors appealing to your emotions. I'm not defending China; their Maoist policies were, and are, brutal and oppressive, but the situation was far worse before they came.
Both my parents are Tibetan and I studied Tibetan Buddhism and Tibetan culture for many years. I know there were lot of flaws in old Tibetan society but never like what CCP has portrayed. Most of the famous high leaders so called Lamas or hight castes people in old Tibet came from poor family. Good example is Dalai Lama himself. There was no caste systems in Tibet like Indians did. Anybody can become leaders in Tibet no matter who you are.

I never said there are positive things about slavery. I even never used word slavery. I used word masters and servant which is equivalent to employer and employee in modern time. I do not believe complete slavery system was existed in old Tibetan society. Every worker was compensated for their work.
In old Tibetan society, I heard stories of masters and servents and ill treatment of servents. I also heard lots of positive stories about masters and servents as well. What CCTV trying portray is totally exagerated story of old tibetan society. What happened to the good things existed in old Tibetan society. Never mensioned by CCP. We can talk about lots of bad things about old Chinese society as well but what is the point. We should talk about now and the future.
Thanks for posting this interview with Mr. Parenti here.
Personally, haven't read and don't know much about the Sino-Tibetan conflict. What I have read over the years has made me quite sceptical of the claims made by both Tibetan nationalists and Chinese nationalists.
Tibet was by no means an earthly paradise, and Chinese rule has generally benefited only the Chinese government and its supporters. Ultimately, this is a Sino-Tibetan matter, and must be left to those parties to work out.
If you say Long live Tibetan Chinese and long live Chinese Ethnic theN why does the Chinese Government Insist on Killing and torturing the Tibetan People. One day your Chinese people will find the truth the they will FREE TIBET!!!!!!!!
chinese government does not kill Tibetan but the evil monks who had slaved Tibetan for hundreds of years. communist is not an ideal government but it is at least better than slavery. Chinese government had been free tibet from slavery since 1959. but idiot like you doent know what the fuck was going on in Tibet and think that the "monks" are the real Tibetan.
@joej2005 What about Civil Rights? China is laying far behind. Compare that to the rights people have in Europe and the U.S. I KNOW western countries have done a lot of bad things, but that doesn't take away the fact that the Chinese keep on mocking the Tibetans, and that is an understatement.
they can see videos against china, i try to send a video to a friend in china about the chinese army shoot Tibetan while they try to cross the mountains to india
i am sorry i meant to say they CANT, and i sent him the link to the video but he could not open it, its restricted, so they live thinking china is the goodguy, they dont know anything about the brutalities of chinese armies, and not only that link but many links could not be open aswell all showing that the chinese army has done to tibetans
All chinese coming here can read and write in English, we can compare resouces from two sides: China and Western countries.
We can draw conclusion clearly which one is right
We chinese know our history and culture much better than foriegners, just like you know much more history and culture of your own country than us Chinese.
@joej2005 What's useful about learning to write or read Chinese? The whole world speaks English, get used to it. Chinese is a beautiful but damn difficult language.
@FearThisChannel china has a double language system which means all high school students need to achieve certain level of english efficiency in order to get to high school
I think if you live peacefully, they won't bother you. There are still asshole police like in all country, but people who support terrorist is viewed the same way.

TheSaImonfan 3 weeks ago
@TheSaImonfan "there were few records of the evils deeds lamas did"
Then how do you know they really happened. Maybe he is fabricating most of it.
In any case it sounds an awful lot like China today. They control the media and erase all records they don't like. Do you realise many younger Chinese don't know about Tianaman square. Of those that do, many believe it is all western lies. Of course we have all seen the video evidence and many saw it live, some were even there to see it.

I don’t know if child slavery still a problem in China but I do know that China supports Child slavery in the rest of the world. They support dictatorships that use it and buy goods produced by slave children. China has long been condemned for this but still it goes on.

Of course bad things happened under the Dalai Lama's rule. Bad things happened everywhere particularly at that time. Have a look at your own history.
That does not give you the right to occupy the country. You can help them out but you can't take over and make it a part of your country.
StormyWeather2012 3 weeks ago
@StormyWeather2012 First and foremost, I am not a Chinese. There are also Western dissidents are on-the-run and/or persecuted by the West. Precisely, when I look into the China's history, I'm perplexed how is Tibet considered a country since she was a province since the Qing dynasty. Must all Tibetans suffer and be deprived of China's (a nation of 56 ethnic groups) development, just because of some pro-independence groups? Are they true voices of Tibetans? Enlighten me please.
hellopanda369 3 weeks ago
@hellopanda369
PART 1
How will we ever know what the Tibetans would have choosen for themselves now?
They were never given the chance to choose their own way because China invaded and took over.
Yes, during the Qing Tibet was somewhat under the control of China, it was a vassal state of China; a vassal state does not really belong to the controling country. For the first half of the 20th century it was free and during the Ming it was free and not a part of China. Now read part 2
StormyWeather2012 3 weeks ago

StormyWeather2012 2 weeks ago
@hellopanda369 And by the same reasoning modern day China is like a vicious warlord capitalizing on Tibet in time of weakness. A weakness that probably would not be and they not been a vassal of Qing China. They broke away as soon as they could but the Qing still had a stronger army and invaded again. The ROC removed the army but then the PROC invaded again. No wonder the country was in a bad state; China hasn't given them a chance to advance on their own. Shame on China.
StormyWeather2012 2 weeks ago
@StormyWeather2012 I wonder where you got your information from but ROC recognizes Tibet as part of China. You should open your mind and accept that multiculturalism has become a norm in 21st century. Just because China has 56 ethnic groups, it doesn't breaking up into 56 different sovereign states. Can you please move on, the last Chinese Civil War ended more than 50 years ago, while Irish Republican Army is still active as of today.
hellopanda369 2 weeks ago
@StormyWeather2012 British-India and CIA had a well-documented role in Tibet. How is China and Tibet in a bad state when literacy, infrastructure, life expectancy and GDP per capital improved since 1950s? And China is on her way to regain their status as a superpower? I guess maybe it is bad for you because you are envious and hope the country will be splintered into pieces.
hellopanda369 2 weeks ago
@StormyWeather2012 And it is an obvious double standard when India occupied the region of South Tibet, Arunachal Pradesh. I don't see why you guys aren't protesting for the independence of South Tibet. Maybe you guys are envious of China's development, and India does not pose much of a threat. Or maybe you guys just don't bother to read up and take whatever information that is presented you as face value. PS. I am not a Chinese
hellopanda369 2 weeks ago
@StormyWeather2012 Tibet declared independence, spurred by British imperialists, Manchuria & Taiwan (Jap imperialists), and Mongolia (Soviet imperialists). All tried to capitalize on a China weakened by warlords, civil unrest and imperialist powers. So after WW2 and the Civil War, is it an offense for China to consolidate the country again? It is the century of humiliation and now, when she is regaining her superpower status, the West is again, trying to undermine China. IMHO
hellopanda369 3 weeks ago
@hellopanda369 Chinese Civil War is hardly surprising. The whole country is really just a collection of conquered kingdoms some of which became provinces and other just protectorates. So of course, because grudges over sovereignty last for centuries, they all revolt when the opportunity presents. It will likely happen again one day when China weakens once more - which it likely will because of the growing cancers within it (the conquered lands and the hatred that generates).
StormyWeather2012 2 weeks ago
@hellopanda369
I'll give you some other examples of Vassal states to illustrate the point I'm making.
Singapore was once avassal state of the USA.
Hong Kong was for a time a vassal state of the UK.
Egypt was a vassal state of Turkey.
The Princedoms of India were once vassal states of Britain.
Many Eurpoean countries were once vassal states of other Eurpoean countries.
This did not make these countries a part of the controling country.
Continued in part 3
StormyWeather2012 3 weeks ago
@hellopanda369
PART 3
A colony may or may not be set up in a vassal state. A colony may also be set up outside a vassal state. A colony is more likely to be set up when the vassal is so far away that cannot be monitored directly.
So Hong Kong and Indian are widely seen as being a part of the British Empire, but they were not a part of Britain.
The Falkland islands though are a part of britain.
See Part 4
StormyWeather2012 3 weeks ago
@hellopanda369
PART 4
The Falkland islands are part a part of Britain because they were unknown to the Argentinians. If my memory serves correctly the Dutch were the first to spot the islands and then the British. The French set up a colony in East Falklands in 1764 and the English set one up in the West in 1765 to 1766. Neither new of the other colony at first.
Spain acquired the French colony and there were conflicts with the British.
Continued in part 5
StormyWeather2012 3 weeks ago
@hellopanda369
The British forces left the island to fight the war with America (American revolution).
The Spanish later also left the island gave Argentina its independence.
Then Argentina set up a colony.
Then they were in conflict with the USA over fishing rights and piracy issues. A US warship attacked the colony and arrested some for piracy.
In 1832 Argentina setup a penal colony (jail) on the islands but the leader waw killed in a mutiny.
In 1833 the British returned.
StormyWeather2012 3 weeks ago
@hellopanda369
PART 6
In 1833 the British returned to the Falklands and have been there ever since. A proper colony was founded in 1840.
The Argentinians think it is theirs because the think or claim it should be theirs because the Spanish once had a colony on the islands and Argentina was once a Spanish colony - Rubbish argument - that would mean all former Spanish colonies now belong to Argentina.
If Tibet had been unoccupied, China could claim it, but it wasn't unoccupied.
StormyWeather2012 3 weeks ago

You think maybe there are no crazy people in China?
In China you have to worry about being beaten by the governement if you dare to have an opinion not consistent with theirs.
How many people have fled the west for China?
How many have fled China for the west?
Why do you suppose that is?
Don't forget Tiananmen square.
Did China learn anything from that.
Sure did - they now exercise strict control over the media so no one will hear next time.

Professors at American universities that have programs in Tibetan will tell you the same things as this video. It's not just Chinese propaganda. Tibet currently has one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Some 200,000 Tibetan herders were recently provided with housing by the Chinese government, and there is a growing middle class of Tibetans.
jimgzorn 10 months ago
@jimgzorn
Please tell us what amenities those Tibetan houses have...
Tibetans want to be herders not slum dwellers.
HumanRightsVideosT 9 months ago
@HumanRightsVideosT
It's very difficult for the Chinese to provide developmental services, such as education, to constantly moving herders. So in this sense, stability in itself is an amenity. Although the transition may be difficult for some of them, many have expressed that they want their children to be educated, so that they will have other opportunities in addition to being herders. I'm sure it was difficult for other native groups such, as the Maori, to make such a transition as well.
jimgzorn 9 months ago

Maoris were fighting each other when invaders arrived and they are still pretty tribal.

HumanRightsVideosT 9 months ago

If u want to be a good citizen, u'll be treated as a good citizen.
If u want to be a trouble maker, u'll be treated as a trouble maker.
If u want to be a terrorist, u'll be treated as a terrorist. OK?

What is good citizen? believe everything what CCP tells you.
What is trouble maker? speaking against CCP or expressing your opinion.
What is terrorist? Doing anything that touches CCP's power.
I am sure dogs and cats in China won't have any problem.

All chinese coming here can read and write in English, we can compare resouces from two sides: China and Western countries.
We can draw conclusion clearly which one is right
We chinese know our history and culture much better than foriegners, just like you know much more history and culture of your own country than us Chinese.
