@luigicamp69 HE HE HA HA HO HO!!! Yeah, glad you agree. That year, Robert Downey Jr. had ONE OF THE ultimate acting challenges, and maybe even of all time. He SO should have won that year!!!
Dan Arkroyd says "What is he putting on? A suit of armour?" at 0:19! HAH! Did anyone else get that? Such a great coincidence... or is it! Arkroyd is a legend.
This film should have been so much better than it was. It was fraught with so many setbacks, mostly financial, which created so many problems. And it was made too late. Up to the 1970's the Tramp was still one of the most recognizable images on the planet. Not so much by the early 90's. The public by and large is not interested in "old" stuff. Chaplin had such an amazing, full life, but in an attempt to get the public's attention, the film labored on his "wild side".
i heard a lecture on this guy in my film class last week, even watched his film "The Kid", and i was just so interested in it. I haven't seen this biopic of Chaplin, but i most certainly will.
Robert Downey Jr. is one of the greatest actors there is. From Chaplin to Sherlock Holmes 2, i swear he's knocked every acting role he's gotten out of the park.
Is it true that Richard Attenborough dubbed all of Robert Downey Junior's lines because he couldn't do an English accent? Just curious, doesnt change my opinion of him in any way :D
@blah96blahblah I don't think they dubbed over his lines. I read somewhere that for Sherlock Holmes, Robert Downey Jr. didn't have to spend much time on the English accent because of his work on Chaplin.

This shows how hypocrital the white man is. They hate Michael Vick over killing animals when they treated blacks worst than dogs. They accuse Michael Jackson of being a pedo, when he clearly was not and he was even proven innocent. They worship charlie chaplin who IS A WELL KNOWN , PROVEN PEDO. HE DATED HIS WIFE WHEN SHE WAS 12. SAME WITH ELVIS HE DATED HIS WIFE WHEN SHE WAS 14. I tell ya the white man is evil and the biggest hypocrites in history
@reelbrutha2 Actually all of Chaplins' wives were 16+. I guess the white man shouldn't have bothered inventing so much of what we use today just to be called evil..
Best Male Acting Performances of the 1990's: 1. Anthony Hopkins, The Silence of the Lambs (1991) 2. Denzel Washington, Malcolm X (1992) 3. Geoffrey Rush, Shine (1996) 4. Robert Downey Jr., Chaplin (1992) 5. Al Pacino, Scent of a Woman (1992) 6. Billy Bob Thornton, Sling Blade (1996) 7. Robert De Niro, Cape Fear (1991) 8. Sean Penn, Dead Man Walking (1995) 9. Liam Neeson, Schindler's List (1993) 10. Tom Hanks, Forrest Gump (1994)
@cinemapsycho91 I don't have anything against Pacino (he's one of my favs), but that wasn't his best performance ever; and it surely wasn't as much of a challenge as portraying Chaplin like R.D.Jr did. Robert should have been rewarded for that. But oh well, it's Hollywood. I am sure Peter O'Toole would say to me.. "Yeah, tell me something I don't know" :)
I think Downey Jr. in Chaplin, Pacino in Scent of a Woman, and Washington in Malcolm X all should have tied for the Best Actor Oscar that year. That would have been a legitimate three way tie and the first three way tie in Oscar history.
@snoookie456 agreed, only robert downey jr. could capture the ttrue nature of Charlie Chaplin. And you kow the thing about chaplin is that he was an actor needed for the 20's and 30's society.
woah...i got here from watching Ray William Johnson's latest video, to the time traveler in 1 of Chaplin's films, to an optical illusion of Chaplin's face, to hearing Chaplin's voice for the first time ever and then finally THIS!! i wanna watch this movie now LOL
@low85 it's from a different movie. production companies send clips to another company to make the trailer, and sometimes they use different music from other movies. you can hear the song "requiem for a dream" in like 50 babillion trailers
How can a movie about a man whose movies were so entertaining be so painfully boring? Solid performance by Downey, but I found the film to be incredibly dull and slow-paced. Perhaps if it were edited down by 30 minutes or so and more homages were made to silent film technique (like the scene where they were hiding the film canisters from the cops), it would have been significantly better. I was disappointed with this one, but then again, most of Attenborough's pictures put me to sleep.
This is the sadest movie i have ever seen, the scene on the train where he is returning to London makes me cry everytime without fail. Robert Downey Jrs performance is perfect, he trully is a inspiering, incredible actor. The film is genius! :D
