i once put myself between two automatic doors as a kid of 5, i stood between them and held my arms out pretending to guard the door. the doors closed and i was not really hurt, but i was scared and shocked. since then, i`ve always been careful with automatic doors. perhaps this kid needs something similiar? sometimes, its better to let kids learn from their own mistakes than protecting them from it. i think the mother should tell the kid what has happened to kids who run onto the streets

This reminds me of a wife and her toddler at the mall. The kid wasn't behaving and then fell down and refused to get up. So the mom just walked away leaving the kid. After a few seconds the kid jumped up and ran to her. I think the kid got the message. Leaving your kid can be bad some times, but the method gets to the kids head!

I leashed my son when he was 3. I lived in the city, and he'd wrestle his hand out of mine and take off. I absolutely did not want to take the risk of his getting hit by a car. I didn't have to use the leash long before he decided he'd rather just walk hand-in-hand with me. :)

I often get annoyed when people say those child-leash harnesses are inhumane, but sometimes they do come in handy such as if there is a big crowd and a child can get separated from a parent. In the case of this episode, the leash probably wouldn't help even this kid, as he would figure out a way around it or hurt himself. So I kind of agree with you, but it's probably too late to try that on him.
