Neon Ballroom was the only album I had of theirs. It got me through a very rough time in my life. I hadn't heard this song or the album in years. Will be purchasing it again soon. And this song will FOREVER move me.
@RealTrueTarget I know what you mean !! I bought this album when iwas 14 :D totally a big fan :D .. they are not that huge in Taiwan, but I am glad to know these guys :D
My name is chris and I'm 25 years old. I would do anything to go back in time and rescue myself as child and lift myself out of the wave called life, that was ready to drownd me , in drug abuse, self abuse. GET UP,GET UP CHRIS AND wake up and let me save you from yourself. Good things will come. Lessons learned. Emotion sickness from pychosis.
Liked it, enjoyed it, apreciated it, still love it. Something of the 90's to remember and miss but that I still like. Or that I already liked it. It fits my taste before and after over a decade of changes.
This was the song that made me say, "Okay, Daniel Johns is a musical genius!" After that Diorama came out and I was like, "Wow, he's even better than I thought." Which was hard to believe even for me since I already thought of him as a genius.
It's a sad fact of the world that how popular (i.e. how "good" you are - not the sham that is popularity these days) is based on where you come from in the world. These guys should have been much bigger than they were - their music had so many evolving levels of complexity.
When I was a kid i heard this song for the first time and dreamed i was in the ending train, with the same background. The dirty water started moving up and up, and things on the floor, like papers and soda cans were suddenly floating around me. I moved to the top to catch any possible air. When the water covered the whole train, i searched in all wagons for anything. I held my breath to the limit, just to discover i was able to breath underwater in the end. Woke up scared and panting.
@Jugeman basically I think Neon Ballroom was the bridge between what they wanted to become and the old grunge sound they started with and that's what makes it so epic. Their later stuff was just ok, but not on the same level of raw exploration that made Neon Ballroom such a refreshing rock album.
@Jugeman Neon Ballroom took a few years for me (sadly). At first I just didn't get it and maybe it was also because I was only 16 when it came out. I had worn out Frog Stomp and may or not have had Freak Show yet. It wasn't until a few years ago when I started evolving as a musician myself and wanted to start doing things with my recording software that just weren't possible with my 3 piece band that the total genius and maturity of that album slapped me in the face and I fell in love with it.
@Jugeman i agree with your sentiments on neon ballroom, and diorama is very different, but it is a VERY good album in it's own right, though clearly a different feeling silverchair. young modern on the other hand... :\
all you helgott fan fags need to get off yr pretentious high horses and recognize Hollywood celebrity when you see it.If any of you spittin about him can name another modern pianist,Ill give you a fucking dollar
For those who might be interested, look up David Helfgott's bio. *He is playing piano on this track* Those who are inclined to delve into what makes a band tick might find some interesting information here.
@deSadetheImpaler That's all I'm sayin. Not a fan....just found it interesting. Never actually heard of the schizo until recently. Being somewhat of a piano player myself, I thought I would look into his bio. If one were to ask me, this whole song is basically mediocre.
This song has to be SIlverchair's penultimate song, well at least for me, no matter how many times I have listened to it, it has never failed to move me.
To enter into the new VS old debate I will say this:
I love every single work by this band. Frogstomp & Freakshow are great but a little naive, Neon Ballroom masterful but depressing, Diorama swirling and hopeful (my favourite album too!) and Young Modern musically as brilliant as ever though I think lacking the depth of their previous work.
@Jugeman I agree Neon Ballroon was a brilliant album, and it's unfortunate that struggle, depression and dark thoughts often lead to the most original, honest and inspired music. Most of the musical greats have walked the blade's edge. It's a beautiful album, but I don't like to think of it as their best because of the underlying themes. What makes Silverchair great to me is that they produce an amazing sound in both dark times and good. Daniel came out the other side & kept going.
@yorkheardt He still struggles dude. And I think it's great that depression and angst can breed amazing talent. There's two ways to come out of depression, and if you choose the right one, you're still here.
People who don't struggle with anything are truly missing out on one of life's experiences. You have to have the bad to appreciate the good.
@XxAussieFuryxX I completely agree, whenever something gets me down I just think well that is another experience, I may be able to use this experience to help another sometime, and it is surprising how true that is. After going through a rough period of mental illness my eyes were opened to all these people around me whose sadness was disguised by a smile.
I think this portrayal of depression; the music, words and video, is so amazingly accurate!
@XxAussieFuryxX I Completely agree, I'm by no means a historian of Daniel Johns but from what I know he truly seems/seemed to be a tortured musician. And from that struggle he created beautiful music. Thanks Daniel.
@mattlekochinsky I think we all have our fair amount of shit to deal with, but some of us embrace that darkness, turn it into something beautiful, but we're also the first to help out other people. Daniel Johns may not be the first to do it, but he is one singer who shares so much of himself in his music, and you don't have to be a die-har dfan or a musician to get it.
@XxAussieFuryxX I listen to The Whitlams, and found them to be equally dark and melancholy, even though their sound tends to be quite the opposite. I met Tim Freedman once in a bar, and told him he music saved my life. He smiled, lifted his glass and kept drinking his scotch without saying another word. It occurred to me that after his three friends committed suicide that his music is now his burden to them, and he carries it with him wherever he goes.
@hOOnl I got an email from them as a fanclub member saying that they are on an infinite break. They aren't coming back. Thay are all going their separate ways.
@Jugeman I agree with a bit of a twist. i think that freakshow is their best album but that songwriting elements from this album were really good. they should have mixed freakshow and this album instead of turning in to the crapfest they are. its probably the reason they broke up.
@laynestaley1990 Dude none of their albums were a crapfest their music just didnt appeal to alot of people do you know how amazing diorama was instramentally each instrament in a song of diorama has aprox 27 different track anthem of the year 2000 the bass and guitar are togeather dead on young modern theirs 2-4 good songs on it but the main reason people didnt like it was because it was soo different then any of the others and actually you are right at the end sorts chair broke up
Silverchair have their influences just like every other band, but none of these bands have came out after silverchair, putting the whole 'silverchair copying muse' thing to death, they are their own musicians and they aren't a new band anymore, they don't need to copy anyone, and they never did, they just have their own sound that has been adapted over the years just like every other GOOD band, i hate to compare, but imagine if Nirvana was still around today? they would've done the same thing.
I used to have an alarm on my CD player in highschool. It would play the first song on whatever CD was in there. I woke up to this song for a year. love love lovvvve this song
I'll always be glad this band existed. No matter what genre they supposedly fit in or "sounded like" they were never part of any of them to me. They existed in a unique little pocket and created some dynamic and ever-evolving works of art. So much more than a garage band, yet so drastically underrated at the same time.
@Raine54321 You have misread what i've said, i never called them Nirvana wannabees or unoriginal myself, i was commenting on how alot of other people put them down as stuff like that. That might not be the case in Australia but over here it very much is the case, no matter how different they make their music people always claim they've ripped off someone else, it's sad but they always do get pinned as rip-offs no matter what.
fucking beautiful. even from the thrash music they used to be, to this...i think it's beautiful and i love it. ...but there NEW shit....is just that. shit.
fucking beautiful. even from the trash music they used to be, to this...i think it's beautiful and i love it. ...but there NEW shit....is just that. shit.
It's funny, Silverchair have changed their sound quite often but no matter what they've never been able to break free of just being seen as Silverchair, they've always been one of those bands who are pinned to a "Oh they are so copying _____" tag. They went from being put down as Nirvana wannabees to people claiming their ripping off Muse and more recently they've apparently been trying to steal Take That's sound XD, it's amazing.
Next it'll be; "OMG Silverchair are copying Susan Boyle!"
@caemawred Haha, that's an interesting take on them but to the people in question they were around long before Muse who i believe aren't exactly the most original band around "cough- (radiohead)"- although i do like them. Haha, Take That- WTF??!! Who are these dickheads? :-)
HEY MAYBE THE BAND GREW THE FUCK UP FROM BEING 16 YEARS OLD AND SINGING ABOUT THEIR PROBLEMS..THEIR MUSIC PROGRESSION IS BEAUTIFUL. ALL OF THEIR ALBUMS ARE BEAUTIFUL AND INSPIRING. ANY SONG THIS BAND WRITES HAS MORE THOUGHT AND EFFORT PUT INTO IT SO TO SAY YOU'RE A FAN BUT NOT OF THEIR NEW STUFF IS COMPLETE B.S. SHUT THE FUCK UP AND ENJOY MUSIC. IF YOU LIKE A SONG WHO CARES WHO FUCKING SINGS IT? OR WHAT SONG? MUSIC IS MUSIC YOU FUCKING IDIOTS.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow

Damn, this video looks how I feel. Heavy-hearted, lost, disconnected. I've never seen a video this perfect for this emotion.
