If I remember correctly, and in a nutshell: the receiver gains more momentum, and extra chamber gases build up resulting in more gas pressure after each shot. That may not be all but it does happen with most full automatic weapons.

When I was firing an M4 (short M-16) literally the most recoil I could detect was the red dot wiggle a little bit. If you have it nestled properly in your shoulder, it is a beautifully accurate weapon.
