The history of jazz as a genre is based on what someone disparagingly called "just covering someone else's song" below. Turner is participating in a tradition that spans at least from the start of the last century to the present day. More interesting than bland refusals of this version or hiding behind generalizations, what is it *specifically* that you dislike about Turner's cover? That's where a real discussion can start.
lovely version. wasn't sure what I thought at first -i love the original so much-but after a few listens I really like it. what i do find a bit depressing are some of the bitchy comments people have left. it seems some fans want to get "tribal" about whose version is best-in a way which I imagine the musicians discussed wouldn't do. it was from a tribute album, made by Hancock, a friend and earlier collaborator. mitchell appeared on the album herself, so i don't imagine she disapproved.
Oh dear, will you all please stop cyber- bitching ! They are both "grandes-dames" and it's "some song" as it self-describes. Personally I prefer Joni's version but you have to concede that this is pretty well performed.
Sorry Tina; you've absolutely made a mockery of the original, along with those clowns accompanying you. It sounds too contrived and desparate. I won't hear this anymore.
@bapyou He may be good at his game, along with the other musicians who accompanied him; even Tina T for that matter. But the fact remains mate, it was a 'bad day at the office' when they performed this, when I compare it with Jonie M's version. My ears don't fool me. Period!
@petermcintyre100 You may dislike this performance of this song for any reason you wish to dislike it, but calling Herbie Hancock a "clown" is an idiotic statement.
@bapyou Don't be too disheartened by my comments. I was just being 'flippant' Due to this bad version. I appreciate Herbie H. Jazz Funk/Rock/Fusion, is my main bag stretching back 40years. Keep the vultures away from great tunes; that's all.
@death2pc I know I'm not alone on this. You're a good judge mate. I get a natural high when I hear Jonie M's version. I have it on vinyl & ceremoniously play it on special occasions. This version I'd play, only if I'd had the miss-fortune of receiving an enema! ¦¬D
As you would readily agree, when it comes to certain real and talented musicians, least of which not being those who write their own music, as opposed to some who claim they are musicians and simply do their version of someone's else's song...... If I were the latter I'd steer far away and then some of my version from certain "nonpareil" types such as Mitchell. But then I'm full of dignity, respect and am self-effacing.
As much as I love what Tina has done with this piece, joni's has a special meaning and place - you need to remember that she recorded this in 74. People weren't ready for this and in some ways - they still aren't
Pure artistry...the energy reminds me of when I first heard jazz...Tina, you NEED to sing more jazz compositions! I LOVED this! (I Love you too Herbie!)
Sure sounds like Wayne Shorter on sax and Herbie Hancock on keyboard. I agree, this cover works well. Nice !! I'm guessing mid 1980's for recording date, anyone know?
It won the grammy for the best album of the year, just a year ago. This is like that fine Bourdeaux you've waited all your life to open up. music is our best hope in this life.
Its interesting that Tina would cover this song and its implications. It was rumored tht early in their contentious relationship Ike had pimped Tina and they had done some crime to survive (hold ups, drug dealing & robberies)
Hey what a beautiful antidote to all the canned prepackaged, hyper marketed music that saturates our lives these days. Tina, Herbie and all you folks involved in bringing us this Joni gem we salute your magnificence!
Tina has brought new life to one of Joni's masterpieces and made it very much her own song. Her phrasing and vocals are powerful and simply beautiful. Brava, Tina!
Edith & The Kingpin is one of the greatest songs Joni Mitchell has ever written and Tina Turner sings the hell out of it. Who knew that Tina had these amazing jazz chops and could transform a pop-jazz masterpiece into something very distinctive and very much her own (with Herbie's incredible help). Brava, Tina!
This cover granted me with a great musical emotion... Joni and Tina, two artists belonging to 2 different stages of my musical journey, united in this beautiful song... and Hancock's arrangements are just brilliant.
Tina was the first concert I ever saw as a child, but I must admit I didn't realize she had the kind of range to pull off the subtly that jazz requires.
Joni ,Tina duet now that would be really something.
What an excellent cover of this song. I actually like this one better than Joni's. I love the raspy smokiness in Tina's voice. Her voice makes me envision the song.
wow, what a line-up! well-deserved though for a song as great as this. well done tina, different tone of her voice on this, proofs she's a truly great singer who delivers the way the song requires it....

You said it! This is an abortion. An insult. But then, Turner is worse than mediocre at best and pompous no less.
