  • One of the greats of her time..and my favorite.....Huge voice, even and crystal clear.

  • Quanta voce! This really seems Verdi.

  • @Fegen~~

What an elegantly gorgeous voice, and a truly marvelous performance!

How lucky they were to have watched, listened to this live! Thank you

John for sharing and You for posting this.

  • She was one of my favorites when she sang at the Met Opera House in New York City years ago. Two Thumbs Up for this performance.

  • @Fegen Thanks dear John for sending, excuse the rely, when you sent i was for days offline,a really gorgeous performance! What for a voice! I admire not so many peaople, but ral great classic singer are such people!!

Did you visited once the met? It must be a wonderful experience!

  • wow this is just great

  • FAB-U-LOUS !! I have the Met Centennial Gala VHS, that this is from, but I hadn't watched it in awhile. Ms. Tomowa-Sintow is sensational, thanks for posting this.

BTW, I highly recommend that DVD if you can find it.

  • I fell in love with this woman. What e presence, what a spirit, what a voice...Just incredible.... God bless you Anna!!! I hope to meet you soon!

  • Incredible singing... I fell in love in 1983, and my memory hasn't let me down!

  • Dank diese Gala- Konzert ist das Werdi-Rekquiem –Projekt mit Anna Tomowa-Sintow ,A.Baltsa,H.Carreras und Jose Van Dam unter die Leitung von Karajan entstanden.Bravo Anna!!!Gruesse von ANTOGEO!!!

  • To mignonDunn I think you will find she was a megastar but perhaps it is because you are an American and rather narrow sighted greatness happens outside of America believe me

  • If you think this is perfection, then wait until you hear her sing "Ihr habt nun Traurigkeit" - but I can't find it on youtube - yet.

  • Perfection! I recently discovered her glorious voice. I'm suprised she was not a mega-star.

  • brava Anna

  • I thought I knew just about all the best but she is new to me. BRAVO

  • Che brava e che musicalità!

  • I love Anna Tomowa Sintow; it's too bad she was a tad underrated. She was a magnificent soprano who started off singing excellent Mozart roles: The Countess in Figaro, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, then moved on to Verdi -Leonora in Trovatore & Forza, Aida, to Strauss (the Marschallin in Rosenkavalier) She sang Puccini's Butterfly and several bel canto roles. Her voice essentially became a dramatic lyrico spinto. She had a big, gorgeous voice and I've always loved hearing it!

  • Impressive! Musicality, taste, color, high notes, line, what else?

  • I remember this. No one hardly knew who the hell she was. She walked out and stole the show from better known artist.

  • @georgerannie She was very well known in Europe, but at this time the big American PR, the recording companies and the MET were more interested in pushing Aprile Millo in this repertory. Certainly a good singer (Millo) but not really in this category. Still, Tomowa-Sintow sang a lot in NY, Chicago and San Francisco. Sometime in the late 80's or early 90's she sang Violetta at the MET, and I remember Will Crutchfield writing: "Finally a Verdi singer whose voice fills the MET in this rep."

  • What an unfettered spirit! This is simply great singing.

  • wow...I had to sign in and write something - are you kidding me!!! what a great great amazing verdi voice!!!!! I love price(of course) and I love to hear moffo sing these verdi arias... but I think this is the voice Verdi had in mind. I'm gonna listen to her trovatore now,,,,i'm a bit excited!

  • Бесподобно!!!

  • Gorgeous! What beautiful music Verdi wrote for sopranos. I heard her sing Fiordiligi once and she was spectacular. I don't know why she never became a major star in the US.

  • Bravissima!

  • ge nial!

  • Absolut genial!

  • it's true! brilliant!

and how she does Wagner Loengrin.. no comments. :) BRAVA!

  • sooooo!!! great :-) very marvelous :-) wow!!!

  • SIMPLY WOW. Genius Soprano!!!!!!

  • Oh- oh oh!!!! MAJESTIC!!!!

  • Absolutely stunning singing from one of the greatest sopranos of all time; I love the way her voice arrives on time, just thrilling! So few singers achieve this; Leontyne Price and Maria Callas had tis ability. I wonder oi this lady didn't become the household word because of her difficult name...

  • Brilliant singing! Thank you so much for this!

  • It`s not from this Earth!

  • Magical! I'm usually a Leontyne Price fan when it comes to this aria but this is a great discovery for me. I can't believe I have never heard of this singer. is this my ignorance or are there few recordings of her available? (probably my ignorance...)

  • Magnifique!

  • This is a REAL Verdi treat. My God!

  • one of the best and most underrated singers of all time. She is GREAT

  • I never really liked her- in fact she has always been one of my least favorite sopranos. HOWEVER, I LOVE THIS PERFORMANCE!! and have to reconsider her

  • Strange thing-among famous Bulgarian sopranos,Tomowa Sintow was always in the shadow of Raina Kabaivanska which Elvira in Ernani was awful and who was simply worse than Anna!!!

Tomowa Sintowa posseded voice of velvet and beautiful, creamy tone without any bad vibrato in top register which Kabaivanska had ALWAYS.I hope history will make a justice judgment and choose Anna without any doubt!

  • no need to choose! they are both great and we can always enjoy their talent. Raina Kabaivanska was a great singer too

  • Please do not perplex the History. I don't think Kabaivanska shadowed Tomowa-Sintow or any other soprano. Their repertoires barely coincide. For example, Kabaivanska never sung Mozart or Wagner (except for Rienzi in her early years), Aida etc. and only few times Ernani. They both had splendid careers. There's no point in choosing between two of the greatest sopranos of the XXc?

BTW why don't you leave the "bad vibrato" issue to the History as well or you'd like to facilitate the Old Lady.

Dilettante.

  • @bodiloto An old bitter man like you certainly knows better than any other the quality of all types of grappa. I bet they have almost the same ability to help forget the personal crash as hovering about the YT and writing pitiful comments.

Oh, I suppose that some of the most respected men in your beloved France, Italy etc. grow mele. pere, pomodori and produce wine and are known worldwide for that in contrast to you.

  • I hope someone will post Anna singing "L'umile Ancella" by Francesco Cilea. I heard her sing it once on radio and it was perhaps her best aria ever!!! Please post it. Anna is right up there with Maria/Birgit, etc. GREAT power and GREAT softness. Thank you!

  • PERFECT!!!! BEAUTIFUL VOICE and EXCELLENT TECNIQUE

  • beautiful the voice has the right kind of "verdi flexibilty"

  • And I thought that Leontyne Price's Ernani was a reference. God...this is just spectacular!

  • Buenisima!!!!

  • Incredible performance...this just blows me away...I remember seeing the gala on TV in 1983 and saying wow!!!! Amazing technique and phrasing....BRAVA!!!!

  • Beautiful human being

  • What a wonderfull soprano!!! She stands above her technique, so save and secure. A true artist. BRAVA!!!!!!

  • I absolutely love the way she sings this aria. She is calm and elegant, yet great at transmitting emotion. And her voice is simply wonderful.
