The truth is that against Soviet pilots the kill ratio was 1:1 at best. Chinese pilots were never as a good and North Korean pilots were just sh.... much less good. Sabres can claim a high number of Migs because that is virtually all they fought. Soviet pilots however shot down everything in sight so they could equally claim a high kill ratio. The two planes were so equaly matched and with veteran pilots in both it really would have been too close to call. Never believe propaganda!
@FrancoHitlini most of the pilots of the MiG-15s were soviets. they did not trust the koreans or the chinese with their brand new technology so they rarely let them fly. the F-86s K/L ratio on MiG-15s was nearly 12-1, the MiG-15 was more maneuverable but was far less controllable and had inferior fire control systems. making lining up for a shot EXTREMELY difficult.

It seems the Migs big advantages were its ability to take damage, it's phenominal rate of climb and it's firepower. As to kill ratios.... there has always been problems around Korean War kill claims and much of it propaganda which is why I tend to reserve judgement on that issue.
@Histbuff1 the MiG-15 is very likely to have gotten at least a 4-1 K/L ratio vs other USAF aircraft like the F-80 and F-84. but against the F-86 they would have been highly unlikely to have been very successful at all.

Most of the mig-15 flown in korea, were flown by north korean air force, not as well trained as soviet pilots. Soviet pilots that participated in korea, had a good combat record and there were many aces.

The MiG 15 has shot down over 20 US planes, American people just cant stand it when something better comes along from a country that is supposedly not as great as they are. Even the MiG 29 and SU 35 put nearly all Western fighters to shame.
@dafty97 they are good but the MIG-29's have been shot down by F-16's and the F-16's is never shot down by air-to-air weapons. The Su-35 is alot newer than the american jets, but currently the F22 has no match. however the T-50 will be in service in 2015, but will be outnumbered by F-35's

I think Mig was build to hunt bombers, Sabre was made to hunt Mig15. Mig15 had more overwhelmingguns, but if you are not an interceptor that kind of armor its a ballast. The more you study ACM and the more you fly sims like IL-2, the more you realize that it isn't about which machine is fastest or which plane has the most firepower. And victory sure isn't about yanking and banking blindly. Victory in a dogfight takes situational awareness, spending your altitude and airspeed carefully, communication, teamwork and a thorough understanding of how to use all the different basic maneuvers against an enemy who is trying to do the same thing against you.
my father was a radio intercept man in korean war..... they monitored all aircraft radio traffic, said when-ever a dog fight would break out, the "chinese" pilots would start speaking frantic "russian".

F-86 had a better engine type that became the standard for all subsequent modern jets. MIG-15 had a better climb rate & 23mm etc. cannon while the early F-86s only had .50cal. MGs, but later F-86s had 20mm cannon. F-86 was a better dogfighter, more manueverable than the MIG-15, but the MIG-15 was a great plane.
Even the older P-80 Shooting Star did OK, & 14 P-80s were lost to MIG-15s but the P-80s shot down 17 MIGs.
I`ve seen both of these fly. it was a beautiful sight. I consider myself lucky to live in a city where we not only see F-18s now and then and stuff like the above but we regularily see the Lancaster flying.
Sitting lower in the aircraft may reduce visibillity a smidge (provided the designers didn't go overboard) but it also reduces air resistance, translating into smoother performance
That also meant that in Korea, Sabre pilots could force the Migs into turning battles and actually get the Soviet pilots to black out if they didn't break away.

also i noticed the frontal part of the sabre's cockpit is sloped more than the one of the mig-the latter would have more resistance to oncoming air flow probably!
russian cockpits are more "shallow " as the pilot says,worsening slightly the view,(compare fulcrum with f-16 for exs.) but keep in mind the pilot is better protected this way,so dont be quick to state this feature as a disadvantage,ok?

Both the Mig and the Sabre had their strengths and weaknesses. Both are fine aircraft so enough with the flag waving. There was a mutual respect when the Sabre pilots and Russian pilots engaged each other so why can't the people of these posted comments respect each other too?
This F86 shows an eagle with boxing gloves, or the 334th Fighter Interceiptor Sq. The 335th were the Chiefs, and the 336th were called the Rocketeers (back in Kimpo Korea in 1953)

The Soviet propagation differed from the American propagation by that the Soviet propagation showed the facts, and American - only lie. Besides, all Soviet data was confidential and became accessible only after reform of the USSR to the Russian Federation. Therefore any Soviet propagation was not. In the USA many years the information on losses was as is coded. Washington for the press had been sounded figures about, ostensibly, 792 brought down Migs, but later Washington recognised that has been brought down only 379. The Soviet archives are declassified, Washington has not declassified till now the archives. Where lie? Turn ratio at low speed is meaningles, who starts maneouvering at low speeds (losts his energy) - gives advantage to his opponent. And mig-15 has another one advantege - cannons, not low powered machine guns like Sabre dose
Most dogfights happen at lower altitudes at lower speeds. The Sabre's guns weren't as hard hitting as the Mig's but they were balanced for range, ammunition and stopping power. The Sabre had a gun sight that was far superior to the Mig's.
And the kill ratios of Sabres to Migs show it in the end.
It's not fair to look at a couple parameters and just say "this plane is better at this altitude therefore it's a better plane overall". You have to look at how it holds up in combat.
What are you talking about? Fights happen on the altitudes of B-29's, and around B-29's. This "couple of parameters" is primary, all other - secondary. What point in gun radar if you can't use it because Fagot always outmanevoures you at vertical axis? Is P-51 gunsight advantage comparing to MiG-15? So it is not a big andvantage and for sabre.
about kill ratio: if we talking about planes, let's talk about pilots who can use plane's full potential. And soviet well trained pilots kill ratio was 6 sabres for 1 MiG. It's not because pilots is better it's because MiG was better. 10-1 Sabres to MiGs ratio against "take off - landing only" trained korean pilots.

Soviet ace, colonel Peplyaev shot down 23 american planes. Your best only 16. Our second have 21. May be slavs are better with technics than americans (best american ace in WWII only has 40 wins, our best more than 100 wins), or better altitude of MiG-15 let them to choose better tactics - being unreachable for F-86 then attack.
And you seem to discount the importance of gun radar...you completley blow that off and it is mind boggling. Let me put it this way: gun radar is the DIFFERENCE between life and death...I dont know another better way to say it. ESPICIALLY when you have a slow firing 37mm gun, which needs gun radar EVEN MORE than the Americans 20mm gun.

Mig-15 had more powerful arms, had higher horizontal speed, the big maximum height. Capacity Mig was that that because of its shot b-29 collapsed on a part. Fights, as a rule, were transient. In miss cases f86 left downwards, mig15 soared up upwards.
But if mig15 got in f86, one shell was enough that f86 broke off in air literally. mig15 could endure safely some hits from the low-power weapon f86. Speed of both planes is approximately identical. Direct collisions mig15 and f86 practically was not - mig had the order to attack b29 and not to distract for fight with support. The purposes of Americans were exclusively migs.

Americans were a success only in fights against badly prepared Korean and Chinese pilots. The meeting with Russian experts in mig meant death for Americans. mig15 More cheaply, than f86, and the more so than b29. mig15 it is easier in service. mig15 is the ideal plane of that time which has inflicted to Americans shattering defeat in air of Korea.
37 mm gun for b-29 and 2x23mm with fast fire rate for fighters :) And if you will study tactics of WW2 best pilots than you wil see that all of them attacked their targets at closest possible possition. Part of the problem was Russia allowing the Chinese to have the MiG 15 instead of sending Russian pilots...many Chinese pilots would fly high, dive on a plane and return quickly to 50,000 feet to get away, and wouldnt engage in a dogfight. The ones who did were badly outclassed by experienced American aces. The Russians should of sent more Russian pilots instead of letting the Chinese pilot the MiGs. But still, no G-suits for the MiG pilots...you know what kind of a disadvantage that is?

The MiG 15 has shot down over 20 US planes, American people just cant stand it when something better comes along from a country that is supposedly not as great as they are. Even the MiG 29 and SU 35 put nearly all Western fighters to shame.

@dafty97 they are good but the MIG-29's have been shot down by F-16's and the F-16's is never shot down by air-to-air weapons. The Su-35 is alot newer than the american jets, but currently the F22 has no match. however the T-50 will be in service in 2015, but will be outnumbered by F-35's

In fact, the MiG-29 has never scored an air to air kill on any American built aircraft, but has been shot down by the F-16, and F-15. And as far as the Su-35, if the Su-30MKI was gunned down by F-15s with wing tanks in mock combat, I don't think the Su-35 would do much better.

I think Mig was build to hunt bombers, Sabre was made to hunt Mig15. Mig15 had more overwhelmingguns, but if you are not an interceptor that kind of armor its a ballast. To know who was better its necesary to compare much more than the kind of weapons and of course, to ignore political propaganda. Thanks calimar28 for this data list. I would like to have both planes in my simulator.

The more you study ACM and the more you fly sims like IL-2, the more you realize that it isn't about which machine is fastest or which plane has the most firepower. And victory sure isn't about yanking and banking blindly. Victory in a dogfight takes situational awareness, spending your altitude and airspeed carefully, communication, teamwork and a thorough understanding of how to use all the different basic maneuvers against an enemy who is trying to do the same thing against you.

F-86 had a better engine type that became the standard for all subsequent modern jets. MIG-15 had a better climb rate & 23mm etc. cannon while the early F-86s only had .50cal. MGs, but later F-86s had 20mm cannon. F-86 was a better dogfighter, more manueverable than the MIG-15, but the MIG-15 was a great plane.
Even the older P-80 Shooting Star did OK, & 14 P-80s were lost to MIG-15s but the P-80s shot down 17 MIGs.

Pakistan Air Force had 150 of these in the fleet. F86 Sabres along with F104 Starfighters ensured that we maintained air superiority over the indians in 1965 and 1971 ---

Jeez, all this back and forth banter. I think Chuck Yeager said it best after flying the Mig-15. When asked what was the better fighter, he replied that it comes down to the pilot. Both the Mig and the Sabre had their strengths and weaknesses. Both are fine aircraft so enough with the flag waving. There was a mutual respect when the Sabre pilots and Russian pilots engaged each other so why can't the people of these posted comments respect each other too?

The Soviet propagation differed from the American propagation by that the Soviet propagation showed the facts, and American - only lie. Besides, all Soviet data was confidential and became accessible only after reform of the USSR to the Russian Federation. Therefore any Soviet propagation was not. In the USA many years the information on losses was as is coded. Washington for the press had been sounded figures about, ostensibly, 792 brought down Migs, but later Washington recognised that has been brought down only 379. The Soviet archives are declassified, Washington has not declassified till now the archives. Where lie? The conclusion is obvious - Washington coiled, but to hide huge losses and defeat in Korea could not.

Actually, after the F-86, the second most successful type against MiG-15s were the B-29s. The jet engines of that era were particularly vulnerable, and the 10 machine guns and 1 cannon on the 29s evened out the odds

Speed and altitude this is 70% of victory in air-to-air combat. And climb rate of mig is far superior than Sabre. So mig is much better fighter than Sabre. Dive rate is good only for escaping. Turn ratio at low speed is meaningles, who starts maneouvering at low speeds (losts his energy) - gives advantage to his opponent. And mig-15 has another one advantege - cannons, not low powered machine guns like Sabre dose

Most dogfights happen at lower altitudes at lower speeds. The Sabre's guns weren't as hard hitting as the Mig's but they were balanced for range, ammunition and stopping power. The Sabre had a gun sight that was far superior to the Mig's.
And the kill ratios of Sabres to Migs show it in the end.
It's not fair to look at a couple parameters and just say "this plane is better at this altitude therefore it's a better plane overall". You have to look at how it holds up in combat.

It went down in history with Russians having much higher kill ratios then their American counterparts in that war (this is accepted by both parties). You missed the fact that the MiG had far better zoom and firepower, with the 23 being able to knock the Saber out with a single hit.

But if mig15 got in f86, one shell was enough that f86 broke off in air literally. mig15 could endure safely some hits from the low-power weapon f86. Speed of both planes is approximately identical. Direct collisions mig15 and f86 practically was not - mig had the order to attack b29 and not to distract for fight with support. The purposes of Americans were exclusively migs.

Americans were a success only in fights against badly prepared Korean and Chinese pilots. The meeting with Russian experts in mig meant death for Americans. mig15 More cheaply, than f86, and the more so than b29. mig15 it is easier in service. mig15 is the ideal plane of that time which has inflicted to Americans shattering defeat in air of Korea.

37 mm gun for b-29 and 2x23mm with fast fire rate for fighters :) And if you will study tactics of WW2 best pilots than you wil see that all of them attacked their targets at closest possible possition. But if say honestly during this war USSR and American pilots respected each other because of high performance on both sides. And if you ask them than you don't hear phrases like "mig killer" or something else.

Part of the problem was Russia allowing the Chinese to have the MiG 15 instead of sending Russian pilots...many Chinese pilots would fly high, dive on a plane and return quickly to 50,000 feet to get away, and wouldnt engage in a dogfight. The ones who did were badly outclassed by experienced American aces. The Russians should of sent more Russian pilots instead of letting the Chinese pilot the MiGs. But still, no G-suits for the MiG pilots...you know what kind of a disadvantage that is?

the Russians were so outclassed by Sabres, that it led to a 10 to 1 kill ratio for the Sabres agaisnt the MiG 15's in MiG alley. Thats a fact, it is not even disputed. Some of the worlds top military experts in nations that hate America only dispute that in saying it was really 7 to 1. Ok, 10 to 1, or 7 to 1, take your pick...it still indicates a Sabre domonation of the MiG, sorry to tell you.
You can say the sky is red, but it is common knowledge that it is blue.

All advantages of the radio range finder applied in f86 were absorbed by insufficient capacity of arms. In USSR did not give it great value as losses of Americans were more than the Soviet losses. Besides Mig had the equipment for radio irradiation detection that allowed the Soviet pilots to make maneuver in due time. Plus the MiG was so tail heavy the pilot had to push the stick forward to take off! The heavy tail made the MiG go into dangerous spins.

f86 Has been created after Mig15, and, hence, there is a probability that f86 - a copy mig15:)
Mig15 Had advantages - rate of climb and the maximum height of flight. f86 - the best horizontal manoeuvrability. Each pilot, knowing features of the car, chose that style which was most convenient. Fights, as a rule, were transient. And capacity of arms was defining. Very seldom machine guns f86 caused serious loss Mig15, but Mig's shells destroyed f86 after the first hit.

And no the Sabre was not created after the MiG. Your goverment tested the MiG 15 in December of 47...the Sabre was tested in October of 47...two months earlier!

Pilots Mig15 had rigid restriction - to battle against bombers to destroy a maximum b29 and not to distract on the extraneous purposes, such as support. You ignore these facts. A problem f86 - struggle against Mig which threatened bombers. The quantity of the destroyed American planes shows that Mig15 free carried out a problem and f86 were incapable to it to counteract.
