  • You have a personality while you drum. You arent as boring as 95% of the other drummers i watch. Your funny:D

  • ala.... Scott Travis

  • Dude, that last 20 seconds was pure awesomeness, thanks.

  • can u tell me how the hell you get so fast?

  • wat pedals do u use

  • you just did an an a7x begining song on drums =)

  • subcribed! thankx! love your lessons! gonna go try some of these patters right now. and you look like my quiet churchy neighbor. maybe he is an great drummer also?

  • This is actually a main part to Tommy Aldridge's solo. He does it so fast, and gradually gets slower. It's amazing. Best version of the solo is called: "Whitesnake - Tommy Aldridge Drum Solo"

  • Painkillers?

  • I have never played drums in my life. When I get my own kit and start, do you have a beginners dvd? I know everything takes time, but I'm a bass player with great rhythm. I guess I just think I will learn faster. But, I'm not loose like a drummer should be, I feel very tight when I sit down to play like every hit has to be done with my hands instead of letting the sticks bounce...

  • 'What dehhh heck iz mah drummer doin?' 2:21

  • Hi Randy,

Could you do a video for the double bass foot exercise to develop speed for single, doubles and triplets? I notice that my left foot is weaker than my right when i try to do my double bass stroke rolls. Any suggestions, please advise.

  • at first i kind of had my doubts, but then you blew me out of the water, GO YOU! high five

  • Man you should try the Coady Clutch by Billdidit. It gives you tons of freedom for moving back and forth between double bass and full hi hat control!

  • not just a good drummer, a good TEACHER, easy to learn from, keeps interest high and friendly manner to go alongside. excellent. even though i already use alot of what you teach, its nice watching these and even very basic videos to keep check on my technique and little touches i dont want to lose. thanks RVP

  • Cool tips. It's easy stuff but it sounds really intense.

  • I love you so much you give me so many ideas :)

  • As always, new ideas and exercises to enliven and enrichen my drumming. Thanks Randy.

  • Whats RVP

  • as you were speeding up I kept expecting you to do blast beats.

  • i just thought of this...david hasselhoff plays the drums ?

  • it could be fun

  • I love this guys videos so much. "So here's another cool thing," *blabapbapabapbapbapbapabpabaapbpapapbpap* "So that's kinda useful for soloing. Here's another fun little thing," *bippippipippliplpilpilililppilpilpplpiplp* "And that's kinda good for a fill or something, then there's...."

  • Its weird how alot of really good drummers aren't recognized as much as one's who show off and market their skill. I was just picturing how much better metallica would sound with rvp instead of lars and tears ran down my cheeks sporatically.

  • @theSWclan Wow... Thanks.... RVP

  • @theSWclan Your right they would sound cooler but as a matter of fact Lars formed Metallica along with James and without him there would be no Metallica.

  • @theSWclan oh man, i totally second that.

not to open a lars-war, and it HAS to be recognized that MetallicA would not exist without Lars (if you know anything about the character of eg James Hetfield or Lars' biography)...

and Bob Rock is right - Lars is a character-drummer, like Keith Moon (re. having a distinct character). Whether it's James' riffs or Lars drums or whatever, Metallica have a distinct drum/song sound.

As a drummer though...it's like when Dave Lombardo played@Download. TEARS.

  • im inlove with your drums .. i mean the sound is killer :X

  • show off...ha how long did it take u to get your coordination down

  • Badass.

  • He's like Mike Portnoy, minus the midlife crisis.

  • what type of music do you prefer to play?

  • 2:37 very nice combo!!!

  • Hi Randy

I've been drumming for nearly 22 years and ever now and again, I reach the dreaded plateau. Dun dun dunnnn. :P I was getting rather bored and frustrated with my redundant fill-ins, etc. When I watched these youtube vids, I instantly came to life again in my playing. You're, hands down, a great inspiration for the veteran drummers like myself. I will be purchasing your video and studying like a school boy, lol. You're doing an excellent job! Keep it up!

  • Seriously awesome. Did/do you play in a band?

  • that kit sounds sweet !

  • Why are people talking about Joey and Travis here ? It's a drumming clip here. Drums. No pots and pans hit with kitchen accessories.

  • Are all of your cymbals ziljdijan?

  • @renshammar Yes, in this video. RVP

  • AWESOME!

  • what is the name of the china?

  • good vid but you need to smack the crap out of that china, it sounds bad if you just tap it

  • david hasselhoff? oh i see! not only a good swimmer^^

  • i used to do the same thing all the time on the toms and snare about a year and a half into drumming as an easy thing to stick in.

  • damn... my self confidence just went down lol

  • that was crazy... i need to get that good

  • That was fantastic.Many thanks.

  • Yeah that is pretty neat.

  • 0:34 Painkiller :D !! , nice video , very good the sounds , 5/5

  • @fetohh Doesn't sound Painkiller at all.

  • sounds great van.

  • yeah bra, you legend bra

  • A thing you also could do, i like it, is tom1 tom1 tom2 tom2 bass bass tom2 tom2 floor floor... just RLRL bass bass RLRL bass bass(very cool with a single pedal) play it in 32. so, for example begin on te 3th count.

  • Dude, loving the weirdness! Keep it coming... (great lessons too, by the way :-) Thumbs up all the way here.

  • im just saying your good, really good

  • He's already much better than JoeyJordison. So Joey Jordison is the next Randy Van Patten.

  • haha true

  • @vansdrumming LOL!! haha joeys a gimp!!

  • @vansdrumming haha I don't blame ya

  • @zFATKIDz way better than Joey. Christ, I wish people would stop comparing people to any drummers, especially Joey and Travis.

  • @soulshadow0907 I couldnt agree more.

  • @zFATKIDz Joey isn't very talented at all, how ever this guy is. he can actually groove where as joey just play double bass...and i a ma fan of metal but if you like metal drummers check out like dave lombardo or something

  • @xXDrummer96Xx Serious? That's one of Joey's biggest strength is groove.

  • @zFATKIDz I think Joey probably watched these videos, and ran with it.

  • @zFATKIDz His waaay better!

  • @zFATKIDz Randy is waaaay better!

  • @zFATKIDz nah, much more steady time than jj

  • @zFATKIDz Am I ever going to find a video about drumming that someone hasn't plastered that over rated turds name on? GTFO please!

  • Don't really think you actually need a double bass to play those fills/grooves...

  • @ks3842

true, i pride myself in having a beastly right foot lol but i still think double bass is important.. if you advance far enough you can do things you coldnt possibly do with one foot

  • RAY LUZIER

  • Great!!! Thank you

  • derek roddy

  • im like :O u r coool man

  • speechless! super cool

  • vanz=great player/teacher

  • you should get some cam on your feet...than split the screen so people can see your double bass technique. Ti sound pretty mean.

  • ..."what the heck is our drummer doing??" too funny man. your a great teacher and have some of the best groove styles ive ever heard

  • One of the best teachers on youtube cheers

  • this guy is good he goes slow and teaches what drumers should learn not just speed and at least he exp;ains what he does not like those idiots from "expert village"

  • just strech your legs so they can loosen up and practice thats all you need and youll get your speed up

  • I give drum lessons and this is so hard to teach. The kids will not try to go slow. You have to walk before you can run!!

  • Lol, that last improv was pretty damn cool!!!

  • just keep practicing, and its not all about speed, dont get stuck on that man, work on the feel of the music.. speed is just a tool, not an answer

  • Well at least a teacher who can play it slow motion. It gives you an extra dimention how to listen to it. Good job Vans, really !

  • derek roddy, gerogre kolias, and thomas lang all have dvd based on speed drumming.

  • Very easy stuff ! So useful, so well explained to a beginner. The great thing about this excercise is that its easy to practice.

  • why do drummers always also stop the cymbls they dont use,lol

  • xDDD your right, kinda stupid^^

  • because of after they hit the other cymbals/drums it can make the

cymbals that that thay aren't using vibrate, witch creates a sound that the player doesnt want some of the time.

  • and the same triplet feel.. BAH!!

  • Vanz..can you be my dad.....LOL

  • i just pooped a little bit.

    that was awesome

  • I can do that I just don't wanna LOL.....

  • he is a god !!

  • great tone!

    ur good

  • y only proggressive metla lol lots of other metal uses double bass.

  • word!

  • For beginner drummers, however, these fundamental concepts will make a great starting point.

  • What a great drummer you are!

Love the videos, they are really helping me out big time :D

  • holy schnikes!

  • where can i get a good drum kit i have a pretty nice used drumset but i need a better one because im in a band can any help

  • I don't see why you're asking on a youtube comment. There are many factors in such a decision. A very important one being your budget. Gretch has some great intermediate kits and so does Pearl. What do you have now exactly? If you want a *really* good kit, consider getting a Pearl Masters Premium, or some great custom DW...I mean...this isn't the place to ask really.

  • DW, Pearl (exports are my favorite), or tama. depends on your style. just dont buy cheap beginner kits from magazienes (spell check). mapex and sonar are good too. ludwig=poop unless its like a 60's-70's snare or something like that. zildjan, meinel, and suprisingly enough cb 14" hihats make great crashes (in my oppinion). go to you local store and try out kits, and cymbals for your self and see what you like.

  • pearl doesnt make exports anymore.

  • damn that sucks. lucky me, i have pearl exports, and my friend has discontinued tama allstars... or maby superstars. either way, its the one they quit making. we both got our kits eccptionally cheap, and the prices for them shot up the next week lol.

  • hah

yeah. It sucks they stopped making them. I got the EX 6 piece shells for like 300-400 bucks around the time of may/june last year, then i discovered about last monthe they stopped making them, i was really shocked.

and also kind of aggravated because the vision series shells start at around like 800 bucks where im from.
