  • Omg, my sister used to have the old Panasonic XD So old school!

  • panasonic version was a sexy beast. it was the ferrari of consoles back in the day.

  • why do you think the goldstar model is unreliable? :o

  • I loved my 3Do the F1 you could not delete save files form old games. Youhad to buy one of the demo disc that had a program to delete saves you no longer wanted.

  • @mp4podcastDOTcom True -- although these days you can just burn the demo disc iso to a CD-R and run the memory manager that way. :P

  • Personally, I think the FZ-10 is the best. I have two friends that have a Goldstar and FZ-1. The Goldstar has huge problems with certain games (Crash N Burn, Casper etc) and often freezes. The FZ-1 is better but my friend has had a jammed CD drive about three times.

I've never had a problem with my FZ-10. When in doubt I think it is best to get a top-loaded since they tend to be more reliable. The only thing is that there's no headphone jack on its controller but I imported a FZ-1 controller.

  • Japanese units can be found for a good price on ebay, but the shipping is very high

  • I had an FZ-1 and a Goldstar, and I much preferred the FZ-1. Nothing to do with reliability, just the fact that the Panny looked and felt better quality.

I'd love to get another one and hook it up to my HD TV just for kicks, haha.

  • I had the Goldstar 3DO, and I would just like you to know that mine was solid as a rock. I never even heard of problems with it before I saw your video.

  • @Energyone yeah, i have the goldstar version too, and it works just fine after so many years...

  • I would say that salmonella is dangerous, but I've never personally eaten any so I can't judge.

  • I have to disagree. I own the goldstar and it's very reliable. It's never broken once. It plays games every time.

Out of curiosity, do you own all the versions, to be able to give a balanced comparison.

  • I don't own all of them, no, but I've used both the Panasonics extensively, as well as the American released Goldstar. The Sanyo's reputation I take from the word of several people I know who have them, and the complications with the 3DO blaster make it a no brainer.

My first experience with a Goldstar 3DO involved it destroying a Panasonic controller. I've also heard many stories of malfunctioning CD Rom drives over the years. Your Goldstar may work just fine, but it may be the exception.

  • I think the goldstar you have used is the exception.

The malfunctioning cd tray thing is an easy fix. All you have to do is open the console and re-align the button with the spring. After that, I never had any problems. If you get a malfunctioning cd tray on the goldstar, it's probably because the system was thrown around alot, and the button got un-alligned.

Anyway, I enjoy all your videos, but I think if you do another comparison, you should own everything your comparing.

  • My point is that you should have never had to open it up in the *first place*.

Long term ownership is the only way to truly judge the reliability of a console, so I went with experiences of the long term owners I knew. Examining the consoles shows that the Panasonics and Sanyo models are better built than the Goldstar models, and since the Panasonics cost a new buyer the same amount as the Goldstar models, it only makes sense to forgo the Goldstar entirely for most people.

  • The only reason I had to fix my goldstar, was because I bought it in shity condition for a good price.

You can't tell people that the goldstar sucks when you don't even own one, and your just going off friends experiences. You must not know alot of people who own 3DO's let alone the goldstar one to be able to conclude that it sucks. I would accept your opinion if you actually owned a goldstar and sayed it sucked, but you don't, so your comparison is biased.

  • Check out my review of the Goldstar 3DO to see how great the system runs.

  • I can definitely make a comparison without owning one -- my comparison is based on personal use along with long term ownership by friends. I really don't see how personal ownership would net any other conclusion.

  • Well, I don't agree with you. YOU, not your friends, need to have had long-term ownership and play of the system to be able to give it a fair review. Personal ownership will net other conclusions. I have had ownership and play with the goldstar, and I'll tell you right now that it is a good system. Watch my review of it and see that it runs just fine. In your comparison you should have said "I've heard bad and good about the system, therefore it should be a second choice" not "take only if free"

  • If you want to get into it -- First Generation Goldstars CAN'T PLAY certain games (PO'd comes to mind) because they couldn't load files of a certain size. Secondly, almost every person I've known who has had one has had to do some sort of repair to the unit. Those two factors together should be a good reason NOT TO BUY it, especially since (as stated before) Panasonics (which have a much better record) cost the same amount.

I was making a recommendation to a new buyer, and I stand behind it.

  • So, how many people do you know that own goldstars? 2? 3? You can't judge it based on a few opinions. And just cause you need to make repairs, doesn't make it bad. I make repairs on systems all the time. I'm sure the panasonic needed repairs from time to time too. As for the games not playing, theres only a handfull and you can get a second gen goldstar if you want to play em that bad. You shouldn't take what you've "heard" and state it as hard facts.

  • First, It's a few more than 2 or 3. Second, you're claiming that your single case (where you've admittedly had to make a repair) is supposed to then be of higher authority? That's actually a SMALLER sample size. Thirdly, how do you expect a buyer on ebay to determine the difference between a 1st and 2nd gen Goldstar?

I know that you recently bought one, and while any 3DO is better than NONE, they just aren't as well built. There's a reason a Panasonic FZ-1 cost $700 and the Goldstar cost $400.

  • I only had to make a repair because the guy I bought it from dropped it. You say there not well built and your wrong. I've got a working example to prove it. You still haven't seen my review of the 3DO. I know the goldstar is a good system and you don't because YOU DON'T OWN ONE!

Hey, go buy a goldstar off ebay and if you have any problems with it, then you've proven me wrong and for some reason I have the most perfect goldstar ever made.

  • You realize I watched your review days ago, right? Secondly, as a person who has worked repairing electronics, when a product has a 50% failure rate, 50% of the people who bought it don't have any problems with it ever. Think about it for five minutes. There are plenty of functioning, working Goldstars - but more of them fail than Panasonics. Statistically, I'm right- think about it. Likewise, beyond the direct experiences of people I've talked to, 5 minutes on Google will show similar opinions

  • Who says the goldstar has a 50% failure rate? Who says that more of them fail than not? Were are you getting these statistics? Do you believe everything you read? How can you criticize a system you've only read and heard about, but never had had longerterm ownership and extended play? It's like me dumping on the 360, which I don't own, because it gets the red ring of death alot. Does that make the 360 suck? Buy a 3DO and test it for yourself.

  • The 50% was a statistical example- it means that even devices that have a high failure rate still have a significant percentage of units that *don't* fail. Secondly, even though my sample size was small, you are somehow trying to claim that your single anecdotal case is more significant?

I DO have personal experience- and it's that Goldstars feel cheap. Secondly, I've known people whose Goldstars failed. Thirdly, first gen Goldstars have problems with some games. Logic states "Avoid Goldstars"

  • So your saying you believe everything you hear. You think the goldstar sucks based on what your friends and some web pages say, but you've never had longterm ownership and play. Ok. I've got nothing else to say to you. We've been arguing for a few days, and I can't get it to you. I know the goldstar is good, because I have working prove. I don't believe whatever I hear or read.

I'll still watch your videos, but I won't be so open in believing everything you say.

  • Wow. You just used the "My Pinto has never exploded, so they must be fine" argument. And, again, I'VE USED A GOLDSTAR. I've probably spent more time with one than you have.

Also this wasn't an in depth review - it was advice for new buyers. Everyone I've met who owned a Goldstar has had some sort of issue over the years, not to mention first gen game error. So if someone is looking to buy a 3DO, it makes no sense to spend $50 on a Goldstar when a FZ-1 costs the same. How is this hard to grasp?

  • How can you say you've used the goldstar more than me. YOU DON'T OWN ONE! Why don't you pick one up on eBay, then we'll talk.

I've got nothing else to say to you.

  • You've had yours for like a week. It's not hard to figure that one out.

Secondly, clearly you have lots to say to me since you keep coming back to this. :P

  • I've might have had mine for a month (not a week like you'd like to think), but YOU'VE NEVER HAD ONE! :P And I only keep coming back cause you do.

Like I said, we can talk when you get one. Have a nice day.

  • Dude.

Of course I keep coming back.

    It's my video.

  • Isnt the Goldstar just the same exact console in a different shell?

So why is it classed as 'less reliable' by you?

Im not looking to argue i just dont know the answer, i have a Goldstar and i didnt think it was any different than the Panasonic other than the shell and name...

Thanks for if you reply =) nice videos!

I swear thats the flamingo that hit the back of my car last week, then just drove off, b****** flamingo xD

  • The biggest issue is the CD drive.

The drive in the Panasonic FZ-1 shares a lot of parts with its 2x counterpart used in computers. In fact, many major parts are interchangeable so if you have an FZ-1 with a bad optical pickup but a good Matsushita 2x PC or Mac CD-ROM drive sitting around, you only need to swap parts to resurrect the broken 3DO.

GoldStar doesn't and never has sourced their drives from Matsushita; they made their own drives and they are not as robust and parts are hard to find.

  • As for how the Panasonic FZ-1 disc drive shares parts with 2x Matsushita CD-ROM drives; Matsushita Electric was the parent company of Panasonic (Matsushita's name was just recently changed to Panasonic Corporation).

  • That said, the drive reliability difference in the GoldStar and the Panasonic is relatively minor; it should still be easy to find perfectly working machines from either brand in the used market.

  • My Goldstar couldn't play Samurai Showdown and Spacehulk was freezing very often.

  • it actually has different and nicer animations when playing music cd's :) don't know about anything else but never had any problems with my model

  • All your video reviews on the 3DO were awesome! I look forward to your next review.

Last but not least, I hope 3DO games start coming out on the Wii virtual console or at least the next nintendo system's virtual console.

  • i cant believe how cheap a 3do is,i went on ebay..im gonna get one pretty soon
