  • Who is the modern day equivalent of the Great Milton Friedman? Is there one and is that person invited to speak at TED? Lets say the great Dr. Thomas Sowel or the equally great Dr. Walter Williams. These are great minds with equally good messages but not invited to TED. Why not?

Terrorism, religion, global warming, hatred, toxic food, alcoholism, pornography, self-esteem......

Thank you so much Seth and all your colleagues for your precious contribution in making the world such a beautiful place.

  • I have the impression that Seth Godin is the only one in the west who truly understood the meaning of the Japanese word otaku !

    Great vid !

  • Oh, nice. One with the old intro that blows my eardrums out.

  • Big Fan of Seth Godin!

  • Seth has a great way to get the message across to small businesses, be different and then stand out from the crowd. Fine your niche and define it specifically.

  • Seth Godin is a true marketing hero... great video!

  • i ve got the dvd black knight...

  • the best poison is the one that gets people to pick it out for themselves to drink.

  • There are many ways to market a company. No one way is right but there is ways that are more efficient then others. I think choosing the method that will be right for your individual company is the best way to be effective.

  • Great talk. Trends rule, understand how trends are started and spread, and you will unlock many things :)

  • Another great presentation Seth!

  • check out our video balloon boy marketing video ! its .....am ...different

  • I think this guy, with everything he knows, could be a great satiric comedian

  • @NintendoBox100 Like Bill Hicks!

  • @BMFRaw Though I distinctly remember Bill Hicks telling everyone who works in marketing to go kill themselves, then elaborating on why he's serious and why anyone in marketing should go kill themselves. He was so jaded.

  • @david0aloha I was referring to Bill Hicks' delivery as a satirical comedian.

  • This guy is remarkable!

  • steve jobs??

  • if it didn't all take money first to touch people over & over

  • i looked at the lava lamp, wat cow?

  • remarkABLE

  • Brilliant ideas!

  • This guy is very centered. Very naturally confident, balanced and calm.

  • I need to absorb this man's brain.

  • #Mlike Still have people comment !!

  • Excellent introduction to the purple cow concept, I do not like Godin's books, however his presentations are enjoyable.

  • unnervingly hairless, sleek, and shiny

  • My favorite TEDGlobal speaker so far has been Alain de Botton, the philosopher for the knowledge worker. He mused about the "sorrows and pleasures of work" (the title of his latest book), our ever-more complex careers (formerly known as lives), the quintessential question of the 21st century (“what do you do?”), snobbery (“taking a small piece of someone to form a vision of who he is”), the direct relationship between proximity and envy ("proximity is the prerequisite for envy"), tragedy as a h

  • All lies... don't listen to this guy...

(I hope most marketers don't listen to him, so I can use more of his brilliance and stand out from the crowd!)

Yes, I'm being sarcastic... Seth is great at what he does! :-)

  • @LoveJesusNotReligion You know what... I've decided not to share this but keep it to myself... XD

  • @Juggernaughty824

    Much success to you! :-)

  • @LoveJesusNotReligion

    1) I like your comment and concur with you.

    2) As a non-Christian, I sincerely dig your username.

  • @BMFRaw - Much success to you! :-)

  • He made a very interesting point of targeting towards the niche market and not the average people which counteracts the very natural and almost unanimous marketing plan

  • just watched this clip on another site, im guessing the marketing plan for youtube wasnt good, only a quarter mill views since 2007

  • Seth Godin vastly knows what he is talking about except at 5:00 when he talks about Coke Japan not knowing what their customers want. In Japan it is customary for any company to totally change their entire menu or product lines 4x per year. Seasonal is on superdrive here, and Coke is killing it here, check their market penetration, and their prices are double their competition.

  • Its all about the purple cow! :)

  • Could we use the same theory and apply to Lady Gaga? lol

  • Seth Godin is a true marketing mastermind.

  • wow great video

  • I've just started reading Seths boo I'm a big fan.

  • WTF?? Did Steve Jobs get cancer? He lost his hair!!

  • google the word "VoxTonePRO" to find out what all online marketers are using to enhance there online audio marketing efforts.

  • Remarkable!

  • Wonderful insight here. Lol on the Hot or Not ;)

Each product mentioned fits a need and does it in a remarkable way.

Thanks for sharing and have a powerful day!

  • Seth makes the great point that he who's ideas spread the best, wins. Everyone who works in marketing should write this down and put it on their desk where they will see it every day!!!

  • sorry seth i could never get bored with cows, marketable does not mean worth making a remark about it, it means youve either forced, co-erced. or brainwashed your prey into submission. I will never believe business caters for demand, it just doesnt explain the world we live in, only on paper in a utopic delusion could that be the case. The purple cow is more esoteric than being remarkable, the whore of babylon was dressed in purple too. Doesnt make it something we should market, oh wait we do!

  • @outled It helps if you actually pay attention before you respond. Seth didn't say that "marketable" means "worth making a remark about" he said REMARKABLE means that.

  • @Wintermutate no he inferred it, why dont you catch up clothhead. Do i needc to connect all the fucking dots for you buffons :D

  • @outled

No, he literally said that's what the word means. Don't put words in some one's mouth then complain that the words you put in their mouth don't make sense.

    P.S.-- What's a "buffon?"

  • One thing about the advertisement at the end, it's challenged to actually grab your attention. TED doesn't contradict its own speakers.

  • Think Seth Godin is totally right. He is one of the best TED speakers. Always rises to the occassion, prepares a ton (I imagine) and has something fresh to say.

    Thanks

  • Strange how we discuss Business Principles of Effective Leadership here, in a Country I use to think was the USA,, lets talk Leadership,, huum? Why hasn't there been any VOCAL Leaders around 'Ever' Exposing the Corrupt actions going on with Goldman Sachs, Wall Street, I.M.F., Globalism,, C.F.R., Trilateral Commission, Bilderburgers, and the Big Climategate GLOBAL Carbon Tax SCAM.

Aren't District Attorneys trained Leaders, my question here is WHO'S LEADING AMERICA????

  • I'm pretty confident the best business model for those who want to hit the middle and even the laggards, need to market something primarily to otaku, and find the best things when you apply a set of hard quality criteria and sift them through and maintain a fairly minor commercial presence so that those fanatics tell their friends, and they see that it's out on the market too, a sort of "ohhh yeaa I remember seeing that once" thing when your friend mentions it

the laggards use the better stuff

  • Kill Yourself

  • i like that Ted have ads at the end of their videos instead of shoving them down your throat at the start like some. Sometimes i'll take the time to watch them because of that.

  • @dylanlawless1 They are often a measure above the norm. I'll watch them too, though I'll not likely ever be part of the BMW customer base.

  • "Remarkable."

    :)

  • @dylanlawless1 maybe they took some pointers from Seth.

  • i like it

  • finding the right group to promote in is very important, audience counts

  • Funny how jobs requiring MBAs don't actually produce anything or do any good for society. It's just manipulating and repackaging the work of others and making money off genuinely talented people.

  • does it strike anyone else besides me as OBVIOUS that you need to be remarkable to be successful? are all marketers in US mindless drones that can't think for themselves? oy.

  • Simple down to earth explanations from the master marketer

  • Always a great watch

    you can really

    learn a lot

    from an internet marketer

  • Good advice from Seth. It's the popularizer of the idea that wins. And it's not about your company, product or service... it's about the customer.

  • Nice presentation. It's funny that after his speech, the video ends with a typical car commercial - the exact dull example that targets the middle range of customers. Nothing remarkable. Go for the irregular people! We listen.

  • Cool stuff I love the wrap speed we are moving now so find your tribe and become an active member....

  • This ad at the end is boring

  • That cow example really nails the points he made.

  • yeeeeey i'm a happy person now

  • Seth is simply great! His marketing techniques are awesome and extremely effective.

  • Seth Godin is marketing guru without doubt....great books, great marketing insights....

  • I'm a big fan of Seth Godins perspectives. Just read Tribes and he hits the nail on the head. The ability to adapt and respond has never been more important than in this hectic warp speed communications era we live in-Cheers Kiaran

  • if you are in marketing... kill yourself.

    -bill hicks

  • Bill was in marketing himself by the way he presented himself in his acts. Clearly you understand the joke behavior behind how he talked about marketing. There is really two different kinds of marketing, those that inspire and those that require. What I mean by "require" is that, it doesn't require you to do anything but be a consumer machine. Inspiring is kind of like what this TED guy does. Hes not telling you to rip off people, hes telling you to take a chance and be unique. There is a dif...

  • yes, i guess what i do not like is advertisement. product placement is idiotic.

if i need something, i go and get it... but i do not like to be told what i need.

agree with you, there is a difference

    cheers..

  • Who spreads an idea the best wins. I heard of this before. It is called meme warfare.

TV and Mass media is controlled by corporations. So ideas that could benefit humanity could not be spread because of TV censorship. The only 'ideas' spread through mass media is just advertisement trash which is a fucking shame.

  • Get your ideas to spread like butter that you can put on sliced bread....

  • so much money. so little time. good vid. check out my channel.

  • Contradiction? When doesn't he contradict himself? Who hasn't at times?

  • I feel he contradicts himself throughout this lecture. I think the main point he was trying to make was that you can no longer mass spam the nation with non-valuable products, because the consumer now has some control of ad/content distribution, yet he makes no mention of this. His main point seems to be that products need to be "remarkable", or good, or of quality. Yet there have always been these markets (Sharper Image, Eddie Bauer..etc.).

  • Ad distribution has dramatically changed with the popularity of the internet (which is changing the "tv industrial complex"). The message is still the same though - with this product your life will be easier than it is, you will be happier, you will be different and "cool, or you will be accepted.

  • The guy totally trys to look like Jobs.

  • Great video!

  • does anyone else mute the loud, annoying, intro music, besides me?

  • I agree, the music sucks. But this is 2 years old, they changed their intro last year
