I have a very similar problem on my 2005 Sprint ST. The exception is that mine does that after i have run it and it sits for like 45 minutes. Its a bitch to start but usually after a while of looking dumb it fires up. If it sits for like 6 hours then it usually instantly starts. Going to have to try that starting solution you stated when I get home.
Here's the deal. I posted this on a Triumph messageboard and within 2 days I had at least 50 other people with Daytonas and TT's who suffered the same problem. Someone came on with the fix and within an hour there were at least 20 people who claimed it worked for them the first time, including me. Trick is to hold the start button in for a couple seconds first before pulling in the clutch. It has fired up first time every time since.
