Wrong. They won't be attacked intentionally by enemies. If an enemy hits you with something like a fireball while she's near you and on the ground, she'll die. Regular enemies sometimes ignore the "don't kill followers" rule, and attack a cripple.

There is a bug in the game which prevents you from marrying Lydia, even though you are supposed to able to. Unfortunately, those of us who aren't on a PC have to wait until Bethesda fix the bug. It sucks because she is the only character I want to marry, the others seem bitchy.
