I wanted to phrase a question,trying to be funny.I am new at learning Japanese.Perhaps I should have written"Kanojo wa kawaii desu ka",which I think would mean "Is she cute".Although I have seen imasu used instead of desu when speaking about females,but I do not know which is appropriate or if imasu can be used with ka to form a yes or no question?Anyway thanks for your reply....I will try to find out.

It's like this:

desu is used when you are describing how something is like, like u said "kanojo wa kawaii desu" (the girl/she is cute), sukiyaki wa oishii desu (sukiyaki is tasty).

imasu/arimasu (imasu used for living creatures, arimas for objects) is used more to show a state. for example: kouen de inu ga imasu (there is a dog in the park), (teburu no ue ni) hon ga arimasu [there are books (on the table). see what i mean?
