A great video. If you like to see big trains hauled by multiple locos, Flagstaff is the place to go - and it has the advantage of being close to the Grand Canyon. It's the only place I've seen a train headed by eight locos - awesome!
BNFSBJ!!! I LOVE THIS VIDEO, I LIVE IN FLORIDA AND DON,T GET TO SEE TRAINS THAT OFTEN. I AM A TRAIN LOVER SINCE CHILD HOOD..AND AS AN ADULT I HAVE COME TO LOVE THEM ALL THE MORE...SOME DAY I HOPE TO TRAIN ACROSS AMERICA AND BACK AGAIN...THAT WOULD BE AWSOME...BG..
@charlieb640 now as far as I know, the other day, an SP train from 1978, an eastbound from the Bay Area, in this case ERWCY (Eureka to West Colton yard manifest) probably loaded, had 156 cars in the consist. thank you n happy new year. :)
what's the maximum amount of cars (namely an American general merchandise) a train can haul (whether it be a loaded or an empty train) and how many head end loco and helpers? Thanks in advance.
Oh my god!!!I wish I could get Freight Trains like those up where I live!!!I also love those engines and BNSF is a great company.I've never seen a BNSF train here before.I mostly get CSX and Norfolk Southern.2 monsters are the greatest at anytime. You are one lucky person!!!
this video was excellent , the sound is outstanding , the sound is so nice and clear. wow , someone did a wonderful job taping this. excellent video. 10 stars for you.
Awesome video, I can't see why anyone would "dislike" this. Great catch especially on the double length grain train, that was a good mix of power in there.
Years ago I lived in Flagstaff with my roomates on the south side of the tracks. I worked downtown on the north side. I usually walked to work and if my timing was off, I'd have to wait while the passenger train was at the station. It was long enough to block two street crossings. It got mighty chilly waiting in the winter time!
Thanks for bringing back memories. I agree, this is a great video!
Was the grade crossing designed to bend like that or what was happening? I'd be nervous standing there if I saw that cement cracking as a massive train crossed it! Nice shot.
dude, this is gotta be one of my fav train videos on here !! i'd love to come to Flagstaff, AZ to the same spot where u shoot these 2 monster BSNF's. but its a 32 hour & 55 mintute drive sadly = ( = (
4 head end, 3 middle, and 2 or 3 rear engines. Very common in that area for that size train. I would be surprised if the 4th engine on the head end was actually cut in and working. If i remember my rulebook right, its too much power for the head end forces.
BTW, they are now running a lot of 150car intermodal trains out of LA now.
I made the mistake of renting a house that was only about 3 miles from a railroad crossing. The trains ran every 20 minutes all night, blowing their horns the whole way!!!!!
Trains just make sense, we should invest in them, but there has to be a better way than blowing those damned horns.
Damn, I love Flagstaff anytime of the year! And being a BNSF fan makes all better. That is one place I would to live. I use to live just north of there by an houe and a half. But, I would like to be in the town itself and just watch trains all day. I use to live not far from the Port of Los Angeles and that all you'd see container cars. Damn, I miss the BNSF part of the country. I now live in CSX part. I only seen a BNSF freight go by since I've been here. BUMMER!!!!
@sixx3times, If you think watching these trains is something now, try going back to a time when my father was living and working in Flagstaff and Bellemont (at Camp Navajo) in the 50's. He told me that he saw these same monster trains come through, but with one ot more steam engines pulling these trains. So instead of just hearing the horns, imagine hearing the chugging of the steam engines too.
They need to fix that crossing where you zoomed in! The grain cars are dropping off the crossing, you can hear it at one point in the clip. Nice action though!
Two words best describes this video: Lucky Bastard. Man, not only seeing one massive freight train, but two. Wow great catch man. Keep up the good work.
Bryan, are you sure first (grain) train isn't WESTbound and second east?? Most all of your videos here have had trains coming from that curve (like the 2nd stacktrain) and you've called them EAST. No big deal, just confused. This is just an awesome place for trains. That deep blue Arizona sky is beautiful!!
WoW, THREE Warbonnets (front and middle) and really decent-looking too (compared to most Warbonnets you see today) in this monster freight!! Awesome meet, great video!!
Nice video Bryan. Flagstaff is a great place to catch meets and it seems like they happen pretty often there. I caught my fair share as well when I was down there.
and thats the reason so many people die trying to beat the train! almost 7min wait to cross thats awful!

Hail from JSC Russian Railways! I'm a system administrator from one of the depots of South Russia.
You have really powerful locomotives.
I have a question: why do you often use diesel power, is electrical too expensive?
We use diesel locomotives in manuever works, in passengers and freight trains it is used very seldom.
VadikKMV 1 year ago
@VadikKMV Yes. Here in he US, our rail network is to large and would be too expensive to convert to an electric grid system.
