Ranked 23rd on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1968 chart...

Was written as the theme of the TV show "Soul Train"...
The theme song for season 1 is posted as RAMRODS - SOUL TRAIN. Someone posted both parts 1 and 2. The original version of the song Hot Potatoes - Soul Train is on You Tube as follows: Ramrods - Soul Train. There are three versions posted. The one posted by MrBWilliams for ST Theme 71 is not the original version of the song from the show Soul Train. The original version is RAMRODS Soul Train.
Grew up with Soul Train!! Loved it from the start. My favorite memory: Seeing Michael Jackson doing the Robot to "Dancing Machine" in '74. For a 12 year old girl who loved the Jackson 5, that is a memory that will be etched in my mind forever. Thank you, Don Cornelius, for making that possible. Rest in peace, brotha. You will never be forgotten.
As a caucasian who really digs Philly Soul and Motown 70's style music (Moments, Delfonics, Three Degrees, Four Tops, SMOKEY, etc.), Soul Train was a regular staple of my teenage years. After Bandstand on ABC, I'd flip over to the independent Metromedia channel and dig Don Cornelius and the groove on Soul Train. Caucasian recording artists owe a lot to African-American performers, NO DOUBT!!!
This song takes me back!! lol jk I barely turn 18 next month:(....but I CAN DREAM CAN I?! :D. This takes my parents back though...they were my age (like 18) when this came out. How I envy them....:/
I want to go through a time tunnel and come out of the Soul Train tunnel back in 1973, onto the dance floor, and yell "It's the Sooooooouuuuuuuuuuuulllllllllll Train!"
and also, BTO-Bachman Turner Overdrive gave us their very 1st American Top 40 Pop Hit called Let It Ride
and during 74-75, CBS had an AWESOME Daytime Game Show Line-Up:
The Joker's Wild w/the late Jack Barry, Gambit w/Wink Martindale, Now You See It w/the late Jack Narz, The NEW Price is Right w/Bob Barker (the late Dennis James was still hosting the syn. version) Match Game w/the late Gene Rayburn and TattleTales w/the late Bert Convy
abc also had Password/Password All-Stars and Showoffs
When The Rookies were still goin' strong abc and the late Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg gave us The Spin-off of The Rookies called S.W.A.T. which debut in February of 1975 Starring Steve Forrest, the late Robert Urich, Rod Perry, Mark Shera and James Coleman
and also, NBC gave us Police Woman Starring Angie Dickinson, Earl Holliman, Charles Dierkop and Ed Bernard
and CBS gave us TattleTales w/the late Bert Convy and the debut of The Young and the Restless
Was the full vocal version of "TSOP" with the Three Degrees singing, "Sooooul Traaain, Sooouuuuul Traaain" ever released as a single? I can't remember if it was or not.
I recall Don Cornelius saying that he did NOT want this tune called "The Soul TrainTheme,"because he was very protective of the brand. It was called "The Sound Of Philadelphia." It became an instant hit in 1974. Don said that since he wished it was called "The Soul Train Theme."
This is the one I really remember the best!! It was perfectly fitting for those times, wasn't it? In fact, when I was a kid I used to say "Hey, isn't that the Soul Train song?" when I'd hear TSOP!!
There is no doubt when you hear this Soul Train theme you automatically associate the show with the music.....even Don Cornelius said he made a mistake not letting Gamble and Huff name this song the Soul Train Theme. PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD.......LOVE IT.
MAN THIS THEME TAKES ME BACK-OH HOW I MISS THE 1970s!!!! AFROS & BELL BOTTOMS, BLUE JEANS!!! AFRO SHEEN AND ULTRA SHEEN COSMETICS!!!! WISH I COULD RELIVE THOSE DAYS FOREVER!!!!
@gerlsus And best of all, the music wasn't offensive at all. No cursing, no 'N' word usage etc. Back then, our musicians/artists had PRIDE in our culture. I wish this sub-culture we have today would go away, far away....
@bhigdaddymark I AGREE!!TV shows back then were a lot funnier, such as "The Jeffersons" and "Sanford And Son"!! Especially when hot tempered Aunt Esther used to beat up on poor Fred Sanford with her heavy pocketbook, and Fred's isults and comebacks to her, made the show!!Nowadays it's all about "Gangbanging",violence and shooting!! It's so sad that a violent culture has permeated and taken over a once proud culture!! At least Fred Sanford and Aunt Esther live on in cable reruns!!
; Thank You! 'Soul Train' featured real musicianship, real dance moves, oh how that is so missed, not monkey whoops, hoochie-dancin', and retarded 'bling-bling'. Rest in Peace, Don Cornelius!
I have always heard about so called ho's and pimp's but back in the day no one wanted to make a song about them and no one wanted to dance to a song about them. This music today is disrespectful. It lacks soul, rhythm, morals and respect not to mention talent.
1973 that also when the Oakland A's won the second consecutive world series by beating the Mets in seven games and their third title in '74 by beating the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games A's closer Rollie Fingers who picked up four save was named the series MVP. And aso in January of that year the Miami Dolphins beat the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl VIII by a score of 24-7 Larry Csonka was named the game's MVP.
and also, this song was out when Concentration moved from NBC to syn. and the late Jack Narz was the host of the show for 5 straight years and Concentration was A Mark Goodson-Bill Todman Production and Alex Trebek hosted his 1st American Game Show The Wizard of Odds for NBC Produced by Burt Sugarman who gave us The Midnight Special w/the late Wolfman Jack
I love this version and I am looking for the one where they sing "Soul Train, Soul Trian, instead of "people all over the world".... Love it anyway!!!
I remember watching Soul Train, Bandstand and The Midnight Special as a kid. I loved the different types of music and seeing the guest musicians they would. My God what has happened to music today. I'm with Don Cornelius I'm not a big fan of rap music either, the soul has definitely left the music industry!
We still had Sanford & Son w/the late Redd Foxx and Demond Wilson and the late Aaron Spelling also had The Rookies and plus, The Joker's Wild was still on CBS and that's when they had Jokers and Devils and later the Face the Devil Bonus Game w/o the Natural Triple Rule and Jack Narz was hosting Now You See It and Concentration
@tnawcwvictoria Redd Foxx and LaWanda Page aka Aunt Esther live on in cable reruns!! I still crack up at seeing Aunt Esther beatin' up on poor Fred Sanford, while he insults her,and makes jokes about her!! Classic TV at it's best!!
1973 gave us The Return of Match Game w/the late Gene Rayburn, Roger Moore took over as James Bond 007 and we were also introduced to Jane Seymour and also, 1973 gave us Superfriends, Inch High Private Eye, Yogi's Gang and Goober and the Ghost Chasers and also, we still had Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids along with the Electric Company and Sesame Street as well as The NEW Scooby-Doo Movies, this is AWESOME.
Barnaby Jones w/ the late Buddy Ebsen, Lee Meriwether, and later joned by Mark Shera. Kojak w/ the late Telly Savalas, the original $10,000 Pyramid w/ Dick Clark, Police Story among shows.
@tnawcwvictoria IF EVER A TIME TO BE BLACK AND PROUD WAS BACK THEN WHEN THIS THEME SONG CAME OUT PLAYING OVER THE AIRWAYS IN THE BLACK NEIGHBORHOODS!!!!!
This arguably may be the most brilliant dance track of the 70's, the musical arrangements, along with the fabulous vocals of The Three Degrees, the sound of this is synonomous with the decade, this is simply a divine 70's dance track, undeniably!!
