  • Hellow. I am frome Europe.. I am sorry. . I thought I was supposed to get tipped.. so I always paid less than the amount and then left. Me stupid. I know now for the next time.

    Hans from Germany

  • Number 1: Get a better job

Number 2: If you want a tip you have to earn it, no fucking way am i going to give someone a tip if the service is shit

  • @Gabzerelli5 1. They are paid by tips, that is how it is. It is not a culture thing, it is the way that wait staff make money in the US.

    2. The service in the US is good and most non-US tourists do not know the "rules" that Americans know. So therefore I made this video.

Obviously you are one of the tourists that has no clue so this video should help you.

  • Cruise ships, that is where you need a LOT of tip money. We usually spend over $250 in tips for a 7 night cruise for two. Not complaining, just saying.

  • When I was much younger I was a waiter at Red Lobster and got stiffed on the tip on a $100 check. The gentlemen had taken off his watch (very nice and NEW fossil watch, stainless steel) he returned for his watch after leaving the restaurant and I told him "Sir I never saw your watch" I threw it in the trash, still don't feel a shred of guilt about it either. If he had tipped he would have gotten it back, boo hoo for him. Now I am a computer programmer and REFUSE to wait tables ever again LOL.

  • Sir, your opinion is only based on the anger you have about foreigners and money. TO be honest, I tipped the waitress 5 bucks at Danny's. If you have problems with foreigners and their tipping ; they just want so save money for better uses, like charity and this is what we usually do, we give to the low and nothing more. I'm so sorry your angry at the amount of our tippings, I suggest you take meditation :)

  • @Micropalauluv1 I have no anger. I was never a waiter. I just heard enough complaints from servers in the US that I thought I would share this information with non-US tourists for when they come to the US. And i want them to know why we tip in the US. You get paid to do your job, and this is how they get paid to do theirs. Charity? What are you talking about? Give to charity is great but do you not pay the people that clean your home? Schools? Im just trying to educate you & now you know more :)

  • Nice ! If i go to USA on holidays (but i can´t because the economy is in the shitter), i would have to carry 1 million dollars in singles.

  • @skillbill83 you will be the most popular guy at the strip club i am sure... i think they call it "Making it rain" or something like that ;)

Anyway thanks for watching and commenting! Please subscribe!

  • If they dont like the crappy pay, they should get a different job. Not doing a good service because someone doesnt tip is childish. Its not up to the customer.. its the companies fault, and they should get angry at their employer for not paying them enough. Just my opinion

  • @chessoo They take the crappy pay ($2 hour) because they can make ten times that an hour on tips. So they prefer living on tips as they make a lot more than if they had the legal minimum wage for normal jobs. Thats why the pay is so low. And as in the US everyone knows that you tip between 15 -20% of the bill they make a decent wage and those that are even nicer make really good money. So it pays for them to be nice hence better service. that is all i am saying :) thanks for commenting

  • In Orlando, Florida they often add the tip on the bill or there are signs telling people how to tip properly. This is probably due to the large amounts of foreign tourists.

  • @macrent2 I didn't know that. Thanks for the heads up! And thanks for commenting and watching! have a great weekend!

  • lmao 2$/hr..thx im still not tipping

  • @temporaryme911 thats why you will have to wait for that second beer at the bar for awhile ;)

  • I would tip whatever change i got

  • @woltersworld as blessed2beIrish said there is no tipping culture in Ireland . its not because we are greedy with money or anything its just we shouldn't have to tip someone to do their job . I am in college at the minute studying teaching and when I finish and get a job I don't expect the students to pay me money to teach . i have to do it anyway . no body shud pay a waitress to be nice . from what i see when i do go out .is that we general tip people know and tell them 2 get themselves a drink

  • @padraigdmc I didn't think it had anything to do with greed :) I thought it was more that the wage was better. In the US it is customary to pay the service staff as their wages are more or less 100% based off of tips. Also in the US not only is service NOT included but tax or VAT is also not included so that is added on the end too :) Sucks doesn't it? :) Thanks for watching and commenting!

  • OMFG, 2 dollars/hour?!

I had no idea...thank you for the info. I will tip more next time I visit.

  • The picture of this video before you click on it looks like you're throwing up a gang sign.

  • @AppleUploader Just keeping it real... ;) Merry Christmas!

  • @woltersworld Haha I had to throw that out! Frohe Weihnachten! (I'm sure you know what that means)

  • @AppleUploader Danke schoen und frohliche weinhnachten und guten runsch!!!! Keep keeping it real :)

  • just a side note, not really related but would the waitstaff be taxed on these "tips", or is it a quick hand into the pocket operation

  • @Blessed2beIrish depends if they report them :)

technically they are not taxedd directly, but i think they may have to report them at the end of the year... but i honestly do not know... it seems a bit "shadey" when you ask people about it, but apparently they pay something.

  • Hi there, a question, If I was in the US, and a meal cost 60$, what exactly is that 60$ charging? sitting in the restaurant and the food of course but does any of that 60$ go to the waitstaff? you also said I would have to add the V.A.T on the price as well, i'm just a bit perplexed by this as in Ireland the waitstaff get a decent basic wage and the V.A.T is already added. So if the basic charge is 60$, what would I be looking at as the full charge including the V.A.T. and a 20% tip? cheers

  • @Blessed2beIrish Wait staff gets nothing from the $60 on your bill... basically it would be broken down like this...

    Food $55

Sales Tax (what we call VAT) $5 (it is different in each city usually between 7% and 10%

    and that is the $60

the waitstaff then gets paid by whatever you leave them as a tip. That is what they earn. And since people tip 15-20% they can make some decent money and they prefer the tips to a straight wage as they actually make less money with a stratigh wage

  • @woltersworld Cheers for the clarification, appreciate it immensely, a chara!

  • @Blessed2beIrish Glad I can help. What is tipping in Ireland? I left like 15%, but was not sure the hard/fast rule on tipping in Ireland. I am updating my website and am putting "recommended tipping" for the countries I cover so please let me know about Ireland.

    Have a great Christmas!

  • @woltersworld There isn't an "accepted" tipping rule here like the US, I have heard of people not tipping, they were talking about it on a local radio station, and people used the argument, "they get paid a good decent wage, and shouldn't be tipped". I usually tip about 10%, but If I was in the US, I would tip 20%, as they don't have a good basic wage. Waitstaff here like Americans because they tip a lot! my friend is a waitress and loves when Americans eat at the restaurant. Merry Christmas.

  • @Blessed2beIrish Thanks for information. I really appreciate it.

  • I have heard that some restaurants in New York City which get a lot of tourists

from Europe are so fed up with the tipping situation that they are now automatically adding in the 15% or 20% tip in with the bill.

  • @JSTONE9352 I bet there are quite a few touristy cities' waiters that wish they did the same thing. It is pretty interesting to get emails and talk to people from around the US that are waiters and they all really do say the same thing... that they avoid non-US clients like the plague because of the bad tips. Crazy stuff. Thank you for watching and commenting and please subscribe :)

  • Here's my problem with this.

If your country, a supposed "WORLD POWER", cannot afford to pass a mandatory minimum wage law, or cannot at the very least enforce a custom for a minimum wage increase, THEN WE FOREIGNERS SHOULD NOT HAVE TO COMPROMISE.

People spend a FORTUNE coming to holiday to America, and we're supposed to spend more money than we have to budget for? Absurd.

American waiters hate foreigners? YOU HAVE A JOB BECAUSE A FOREIGNER STIMULATED YOUR ECONOMY FOR THAT JOB.

  • @adityaindia93 Well, we do have minimum wage laws in the US and actually waiters make more money than minimum wage because they make their money off of tips not the base wage which is basically a dollar or two some places. This is used in order to get the waiters to be more friendly and nice to the customers so that they are rewarded by the tips they get, so better service better tip.

  • This would be one of the reasons that most tourists come away from america thinking wow that was great service in comparison to my country. Its pay for performance.

it is also part of our US culture and I find it funny that you are saying that foreigners should not have to compromise, well you are in the US, so shouldn't you follow what the culture does?

And we do love foreign tourists coming to the US and spending money. I am only pointing out one of the faux pas that foreigners do in the US

  • BULLSHIT

"The more you tip the better service you get" NO NO NO

The better service you get, the more you tip. Its not my fault that you earn such a low wage. USA should get in line with the rest of the world instead of trying to be all differenet and unique. If you are good to me I will tip you.

  • @shaun056 it is not about "getting in line with the world" in austria they do get a great wage and you are supposed to tip. In portugal they get a crappy wage and there are no tips. It is different everywhere you go and i am just informing a non-us tourist coming to america that tipping is expected and that non-us tourists have a very bad reputation among the waitstaff in restaurants around the US. Thanks for watching and commenting.

  • fuck tipping and the waiter/waitress they all can suck my dick

  • But he/she is not doing her service if the service is way below standard and imo if you give me a crap service you aint gettin a tip from me, I dont think its being cheap I do love America and I really dont think it really fits in with the american way to reward people for poor performance, if a plummer did work on my house and soon after the pipes burst id ask for my money back, same deal. ive rarely recieved bad service in america and I usually tip 20% anyway.

  • However if all waiters and bartenders were as condescending as the guy in this video It wouldnt surprise me if no one got a tip, heres a tip for Mr Walters World, if you want people to take your information seriously dont talk down to people outside America like were all 3 year old who have never heard of the concept of tipping. You come across like a really obnoxious looking down his nose person in this video.

  • @phuston087 Condescending... Interesting choice of words. Many European friends and travelers have thanked me for informing them on how much they were supposed to tip in the US as it is different in every country. Also, having friends that work in the US as bartenders and waiters they have overwhelming asked me to make this video to inform tourists about the non-tipping problem that waiters and bartenders find common among non-US tourists. Thanks for watching and commenting!

  • @woltersworld Ive been to the USA many times and Im a very good tipper as are many of my friends, were Irish and I think were a generous nation at the best of times anyway, however what I dont agree with In the USA is the fact that you have to provide a tip of at least 10% for even bad service. That makes no sense, a tip should be for at least decent performance at your job, thats why its called a nominal tip and not a compulsary charge. Id love to know your opinions on this.

  • @phuston087 actually 15% is the base rate. anything under that is seen as cheap or insulting. I agree though. there are times when i get horrible service and i dont want to leave a tip but then i realize that its the way it is and she is doing her service. There is a very good song about it from a band called "Live" you should look it up and have a laugh its off the album with lightning crashes. basically says everyone is worth some change :)

  • Furrigners all have guide books that clearly explain the etiquette of tipping in the US; they all feign ignorance; it was tiresome the first time.

  • so they don't like an action - so they hate you, just because they don't give you extra money for do a job you agreed to in a contract with the boss for a set wage(even thought it sucks). For a country that is all union proud it the workers are really weak if all the servers formed a union or joined there other locals then they could negotiate to the minimum wage or better. When americans travel they are not the best tippers, in fact alot don't respect local customs.

  • @wcresponder the union and agreeing to a contract issue is not relavent when it comes to waiters and bartenders in the US. Americans tip 15-20% on all drinks and meals that are served to them (not fast food). Therefore that is what the service staff get paid, it is not the actual salary. It is the tourists that do not know that they actually live off of the tips not the salary. It has nothing to do with them being "stupid" and not signing a better contract. It is how it works in the US.

  • @woltersworld I never said they were stupid, but when it causes this much strife because they are being paid less than a living wage you would think they would rise up for change. Instead as you see on alot of videos about this they threaten the group that brings the business(ie spitting in food, delay service).

I do appreciate your efforts to inform people about your area. cheers

  • @woltersworld I have encountered " @wcresponder " on other videos on this subject; he digs in his heels over the fact that since it's not a formal contract he doesn't have to ever tip; he's made this point repeatedly.

  • @wcresponder and as i can see from the numerous non-us "haters" on this video I think it is good that i made this video as many non-us people do not realize these things and my video has done its part in informing uneducated people about one of the issues out there. And I have received numerous personal emails thanking me for these videos as US waiters really do not like waiting on non-us, non-tippers :) Thanks for watching adn commenting and learning a bit more about the US

  • @wcresponder You still here?

I thought you were off somewhere raping your own butt!

  • @SatchmoSings you are delusional and know very little about anatomy. please seek help before your actions cause yourself and others harm.

  • @wcresponder Until I made your acquaintance, I didn't think it possible for a human being to sexually assault themselves; I now know that self-ass rape is most definitely a reality.

  • @SatchmoSings now your repeating yourself a definate sign of mental instability, you violent expressions really need you to seek help. I would call your local health authorities but thankfully I don't know your address. Please seek help for your homoerotic, violent delusional condition.

  • @wcresponder Until I made your acquaintance, I didn't think it possible for a human being to sexually assault themselves; I now know that self-ass rape is most definitely a reality.

  • @SatchmoSings now your into self abuse, your really in need of medical help. please seek it.

  • Do ye have to tip hookers

  • @regllihac I don't think they would say no... does that help at all?

  • @regllihac You only tip the "high-priced spreads," not street-walkers.

  • Is this also true in Canada or is it only the USA?

  • @vangrails I honestly do not know how it works in Canada. But I am hoping to get up there next year and I will let you know :) sorry I can't be more helpful on the Canadian front.

  • @vangrails In Canada we have minimum wages in each province, here its nice to tip and some places will add a tip(18%) if your group is of a certain size(usually 8 or more) which is doubtfully legal. Tip the best ignore the rest.

  • @wcresponder thanks for the info. i did not know about the tipping in canada and as you see some people had been asking about that. so gratuity is not "required" in canada but they will nail you if you have a big group. good to know (the big group thing works that way in the US too) usually if you have 8 or more (i have seen some places with 6 or more). Thanks again for all the helpful information and comments! I really appreciate it!

  • I don't have to tip its a gratuity, as a Busker (street performer) I would be ashamed to beg everyone for a tip that walked by its a gratuity for gratitude for my service of performing. I traveled in Europe as an American and they do get tips plus a decent wage and benefits (frankly sickly good over the American server) and I tip 10% there its fair. And I tip AHEAD of time when I was a regular assuming they will give me extra service for the money.

  • they dont get $2 an hour!!! wtf are you talking about, you old fool?!

  • im from the uk our waitresses are on minimum wages they dont get the regular tips, also i am going on holiday for 2 wks in the usa that means i have to have on me a few hundred dollars to tip for my duration aswell as the initial outlay for my holiday,is it true the coach drivers ask for their tips before you get on the bus ?,that wont go down to good with us britts,oh well when in rome.

  • @petercollins123 Bus drivers in NYC are very well paid with good medical insurance and a good pension plan.

When I was a young child (going back nearly 50 years ago) and we went out on a school trip, the teacher collected an extra five cents from every student; thirty nickels was $1.50 tip for the driver from out class and the bus could usually hold 1.5 to 2 classes.

since it was 15 cents to ride on the subway then and it's now $2.50, figure it out!

  • I wouldnt tip a bar tender

  • @dan11009 just saying... they probably wont be bring any beers to you any time soon... just saying :) thanks for watching and commenting

  • Im Irish, worked in SC for a summer and got paid a fortune in tips. It was great but so hard to get used too I was almost embarrassed accepting huge tips for realtivly little work. Worked in bars here in Ireland for years and Bartenders dont expect tips. I understand a service charge at a restaurant but should I give a tip if the service is below standard that just sounds wrong I know in the US your expected to tip either way but why should I tip if i deemed the service to be below standard

  • @phuston087 Well, at least you're one European that has a genuine grasp of this whole thing and you put it all in a reasonable perspective; thank you!

  • Great service should be MANDATORY, not b/c I grease your palms with bread. That's why people don't tip, b/c of that ass backwards mentality. The customers are what you depend on, so if you think you are above them in that regard, and you're expecting THEIR tips, you should get your ass off your high horse and get a reality check. See how far that pompous attitude gets you. I'll tell my server or bartender flat out that I won't tip them if they start acting like that. Tipping is for the birds...

  • USA society is bullshit , employer should pay proper wages rather than begging customers for money , raise prices if you have to

  • @MrIran69 You're pretty stupid; if that were done then all food and beverage would have to nearly double in price.

  • i think that people should hand the waiter $100 upon entering a restaurant.

after they enjoy their meal AND pay for the meal separately ...

they should then be able to ask for a portion of the $100 back ...

o% if the service was great or ask for all of it back if the service was bad .

  • Maybe if those servers do their job right they might get my spare change

  • why wouldnt the bar just pay them a wage!!! lend of the free?? free employees!! that sucks

  • @technoshitor well the waiters and bartenders actually make a decent living off the tips (depending where they work) and if it is cash i believe they do not pay tax on it (or at least they dont report it). But at least it gets them to be very nice to the clients in order to make sure they get their tips... i never was a waiter so not sure exactly how they do it.

  • So what Melkor says below proves that all this " tip me or i will give you a bad eye"

    is not justified.

Because to be a waiter is " theoretically" a minimum wage job ( in practice they always gain more but they are not gonna tell you that) just like there are hundreds of jobs with minimum wage where they dont get 15% tip.

Lets say im repairring your frigidaire, are you gonna give 15% tip?

Why not? Why is my profession worse than that of a waiter?

  • @Ducky888888 well waiters do not make minimum wage, many are paid nothing or next to nothing (min is about $7 not $2) so therefore they make their money off of the tips. it is the way it is here that you tip at least 15%. i am not justifying i am just informing. thanks for watching and commenting!

  • YOUR OBESE

  • @horrorduckftw And you cannot spell, so I guess we are even... Merry Christmas from your festive

  • @woltersworld husky friend ;)

  • @woltersworld aww tar mate, hope u enjoy ur turkey :)

  • @horrorduckftw oh i did... it takes a lot to be a fat ass like me :) I wish you a very merry late Christmas and a happy new year! I will do my best to be less of a fat hind quarter person for 2011 ;) Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting! Have a great boxing day!

  • @woltersworld haha cheers mate, i fucking love you americans, go there every year for holidays, my dad owns a flat in orlando ....the people are well mannered and nice. but just saying my dad tips really well, the rich bastard likes to show off, he tips like $50 us dollars n shit

    merry xmas too from england

  • I am American and sometimes i dont tip at all, if you dont earn it you dont get it. Stop complaining.

  • @SanguineBullet667 I agree that if service sucks you should not necessarily tip them everything. And I do not believe I am complaining as I am informing tourists coming to the US that tipping is expected. As German tourists do not tip or tip maybe 5% on a $100 bill you may see why they are not very well liked in the waiters profession. I myself have never been a waiter, i am just passing on information.

  • Under the tipped employees section of the Fair Labor Standards Act, a tipped employee may earn not less than $2.13/hr in direct wages. The employee is entitled to keep all their tips, excepting situations where they agree to a valid tip pooling arrangement ("tip out"). However, if the employee's direct wages plus tips do not come to the minimum wage of $7.25/hr, the employer must make up the difference.

  • @MelkorHimself thank you. i am glad you put that up there for the official rules on things. I appreciate it. thanks for watching too!

  • do u tip if u buy like a shirt from a store or is it just for food and drinks?

  • @Stealthypancake101

you tip just for food and drinks. And that is when you are in a sitdown resturant. you do not tip at fast food places. the rule is if they bring something to you then you need to tip. if you do all the work, then there is no tip.

    does that help?

    thank you for watching!

  • @woltersworld sweet that is going to really help, thanks!

  • Thanks so much for this man! i'm going to the US in October and was stressing out about the tipping situation, as we don't usually tip here in England - i didn't know that servers got BELOW minimum wage which is dreadful, i'll now keep that in mind when i visit this autumn. What i could like to know is how you tip when going to a bar, for like a beer or a soda, $3? per drink. kinda confuses me, thanks once again for this video. :)

  • @MonsterEnergeez glad the video helps. the 15-20% thing is for food served to the table. If you get a cocktail at the bar (mixed drink) you should leave $1. If you get a beer and it costs like $2 or more you probably should leave $1. if its $1.50 then just leave the 50 cents left over. If you are going to be there awhile then start a tab then you can just pay everything at the end and put the 15-20% tip on at the end. hope this helps. thanks for watching and commenting

  • First of all, lets not defeat the purpose of tipping. Tipping is optional and is for outstanding service. Giving fast service is their job. If they don't like it then they should either get a higher paying job or give better service so they get a bigger tip. Stop whining and do a better job. If you want the money, then go the extra mile. Tipping is not to get better service. Better service is to hopefully (cause tips aren't mandatory) get better tips.

  • @marzil I agree that service should be good to get the tip, however it is expected and in some situations required (they will add the tip on with groups of 6 people or more). They make one or two dollars an hour EVERYWHERE so they only live on tips and that is why the tipping is so important. The lack of tipping or only 5% or 10% that people some times leaves tends to lead to even worse service and as many non-US customers only leave that much there is a resentment towards non-US customers.

  • @marzil I am just sharing one of the biggest "hates" about non-US tourists in the US. I am just the messenger :)

Thank you for watching and commenting

  • Mark, did you gain weight ?

  • @tos1o Yes, a lot... not good...

  • I usually give 10% here in Germany, but I'll keep your video in mind, if I ever visit the US.

  • @AndreR241 You better.
