  • funny how it says music is distracting. the more you try to say let it go, the more you think about it lol.

  • He said very sweetly; "be a Mensch".... If you practice meditation it will help. God Bless you..

  • You forgot to say one more thing that Buddhism is not: its not going to save your soul. You are connecting with a false sense of well being and giving power to misleading spirits over your life, mind and more importantly your soul.

Buddha was in search of the truth but Jesus said: I am the way the TRUTH and the life.

One truth alone will set you free from anything, his name is Jesus Christ, Yeshua.

  • @godislove633 ya we should definitely stick to worshipping an ancient symbol used for torture (cross) because a carpenter that started a blasphemic cult died on one and said outrageous things that could only be backed up by "faith"

  • Great video!

  • the music is a distraction to the message, the message is a distraction to the music, and the consciousness is a distraction to the distraction! lmao

  • I agree; This is very succinct, simple and accurate introduction to American Zen.

  • thank you for sharing this video... :)

  • That's a great explanation of what Shunryu Suzuki might have called "American Zen", the practice that involves neither paying alms to a monk to meditate for us, nor becoming monks ourselves. We want to live as regular people but find spiritual and psychological grounding in something that transcends day-to-day life. Thanks for sharing!

  • Thank You for the message. Thank You.

  • Zen is very, very difficult to explain in words but this guys does it quite well. If the music is distracting, don't judge it. Don't call it distracting. Just let it go by.

  • @misterdirtyknees Zen has been explained in words a million times. "Stop and smell the roses."It's a simple as looking at your cat's face and appreciating how much he loves you and you love him. People want to make it all mystical and shit so they can feel superior. We have our own Zen here in the west. Eastern culture didn't invent Zen. It was already there. "The only Zen you'll find on a mountain top is the Zen you bring with you."

  • Zen isn't budhism it isn't anything! nice outfit!

  • This video although basic is actually better than many other videos on zen meditation, its quite succinct and through its own simplistically is very accurate, avoiding the confusion so many people have in talking about such a esoteric subject.

  • he he, notice the ninth cunning hand of ninjutsu =D

  • i like dis vidio....

  • why are you bowing down if it aint a relegion buddy?

  • @sabbas110 bowing does not mean its a religon......it is common in asian cultures especially japan to bow

  • thank-you for the clear explaination..

i recommend lowering the volume on the back-ground music.. possibly using a song with less percussion.

  • Good video and music. I believe in Zen

  • @ZeNiZM but the zen is against every beleiving, isnt it? ;)

  • I very much agree with people saying that the music is disturbing the message very much. And also disconnected from the message the music is horrific - but that is of course a question of taste.

  • Without music it would be great introduction! But he music really is not fitting, actually, a message like this needs no music.

  • the music is isturbing

  • too general

  • really BIG!

  • Great stuff. The music sounds odd at first, but it fits eventually , and the message is pure uncomplicated straight up Zen in a nutshell. Rugged.

  • To claim that buddhism is not a religion seems wrong. While the meditation would be good for anyone, that statement is not in accord with the Dharma. While most of us westerners have a majorly different view of religion, we have to ask ourselves what defines a religion. We buddhists worship the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. We pay homage to them and learn their teachings, or Dharma. We take refuge in the four jewels, the guru, the buddha, the dharma, and the sangha. Not meant to offend. Amitabha!

  • I did not find the music a distraction at all. In fact I felt it was in harmony with what he was saying, and kept my attention and focus on what he was saying, perhaps more so than if it was just his voice on the video. Smart choice. Although I also feel my attention would have been held because he is a good speaker and saying some interesting things.

  • I approve. thank you.

  • I think the music was a very nice addition to the video. Thanks!

  • Are there any women as Zen nuns? at same level as Zen Monk

  • @HealingMudras Yes. search youtube for 'cambridge zen center'

  • Actually, I prefer not to have the music. Why not just let the guy talk, and we simply listen to what he has to say in the most direct way. The music is a bit unnecesary. That is my opinion.

  • This is very helpful. Dave. Ireland :)

  • Wow. Thank you for this video.

  • the music is very well done..and I followed as yu said..infact I was feeling very depressed and bored..I feel better now with a sense of focus..thank you

  • Good video but was half ruined by the music that was way too loud. Not that the music itself was bad, but that video did not warrant any music imo.

  • Excellent video. Thank you so much!

  • The music is too loud, distracts.

A video on zen meditation doesn't need music.

  • @TheKetsa i think thats what he said...u let u hear the music..let go of the music being loud and being separate from the noise..be more interconnected to where u are....if u meditate it well...the music will not be loud..

  • The music is a distraction to the message.

  • @iceland111 I agree

  • A honest question.... Do you think People can fly, because they meditate lots of years...(i mean monks..)...i heard of that....

  • @muckitall84 there are catholic priests who have flown in the past as well as being in two places at once (the story in particular that comes to mind is Padre Pio, also known rather affectionately as the Flying Friar(google it)), however this is an extraordinary miracle and cannot be called upon at will, as well as being caused by an outside force. Raising one's body temperature by learning to control yourself to the extreme is one thing, however flying cannot be achieved without external force.

  • can anybody tell me what is her wearing? the yellow thing?

  • Got a bit of Zen? Your sorted.

  • Aren't your eyes supposed to be open in Zen meditation? If they aren't it is easy to fall into a dream state instead of an alert, aware state of mind.

  • @pgeske eyes open, eyes closed, whatever works for you, it does not matter what is supposed to be.

  • @bodunchar I guess. I just find it a little easier and more relaxing to do it with my eyes open. But I suppose there really isn't a "right" way to do zen meditation.

  • @pgeske eyes open is very different. I hadnt tried b4 up till now.

Apparently eyes closed the mind can become a little dull and lazy.

Certainly no exception in my case!

  • This music totally ruins it..i can hardly hear him and its definitly not zen!

  • Thank you for this Video . . . Gasho

  • do u have to be a munk to follow and practise zen buddishm.

i'm a science student so don't have time to live in a monastry.

  • @BluePittbull666 Nope. Anybody and everybody can practice Zen Buddhism. There is no need for robes, idols, praying, etc... Although you can do that if you would like. All you have to do is sit. (Zazen meditation) And when you sit, I suggest you focus on your breathing and on the rising/descending of your chest. When you do this, your mind will eventually become calm and empty. And when you experience this nothingness/emptiness, you are infinite.

  • what is that music good for? is the Zen teaching too boring for you as it is?

  • Continue Zazen -- XLent

  • ZEN!

  • There is a wonderful article about breathing meditation written by speaker in this video. Just google Eshin Godfery breathing meditation.

  • The music's always too loud in these things. The Vid's about Zen & insight, not loud music that drowns out the voice, the mood or the message. Do you think they play this stuff in the zendo? If all U want is loud music it's everywhere; someone would click on this to escape it.

This was obviously conceived & mixed by someone AFTER TV, not before it. Before TV people were able to listen; now TV and it's ad onslaught has made non listening a survival/escape mode.

    Hail the mute button.

  • @zzinglish53 I know it's been a year but I hope someone has muted you. You need to learn meditation cuz you are a whiner! This music makes you go on and on? What do real distractions do to you?

  • @kurtizzyflush Re-reading my year old comment I don't see anything like "the music makes you go on etc." as you did, but I'd be glad to learn meditation if perhaps you are accepting trainees... Have you sat in a zendo where they play music like this - "all mystical and shit?" Real distraction? TV! They distract...

    Namaste'

  • @zzinglish53 I agree - the "boom-chang" music is distracting, but I don't really mind because Eshin John Godfrey (Hoju Osho) is very eloquently telling it like it is in his discourse on zazen. What he says, and shows us, is right on the mark!

  • I thank you for uploading this introduction to Zen. Its very helpful. Thank you.

  • if it's difficult, try the Osho dynamic meditation first. Then see what happens!

    Sumerup

  • Im trying meditation, but its difficult for me. i cant sit still for a long time, and breathing deeply is making me dizzy since i guess im not used to the extra oxygen?

im trying it for 5 minutes at a time. i need to increase my concentration and focus and I think this will help with that.

  • Try different methods of meditation. You don't have to breathe deeply. You can just breathe naturally.

  • I was in agony when I started practising zazen a few months ago, so I can empathise. However, after only a couple of weeks my old creaking knees began to adjust. As for concentration. Well that's another matter entirely. I meditate for at least thirty minutes a day - and I'm brutally honest with myself. It could take months or years before my mind is finally in my control. Think in terms of small steps, mjfan.

  • well my goal short term is to focus better so i can study better.

my mind wanders so much that my studies suffer, i cant concentrate too well atm.

  • I graduated from university last year, at the age of 40, but concentration has been a problem my whole life. Looking back at my school reports from 30 years ago, the teachers all said the same thing. 'Tim finds it difficult to concentrate.' I still do. Meditation can help significantly. It's possibly the only thing that can. I guess we both just have to be give it our best shot and patiently await the results. Best of luck.

  • @ZenBarracuda You are aware that you find it difficult to concentrate, ask yourself, who is trying to concentrate? the "I"

Meditation is not concentration, that is the mind, which is essential to worldly experience.

Meditation is awareness becoming aware of itself, you are aware of reading this, stop reading and rest in that awareness.... now.

You are awareness, you are peace itself, the "I" is a false sense of self created by the mind ,you are not the mind, the mind is a bundle of thoughts.

  • @eaglerock999 Yeah, yeah. I've read all the books you've read, and I sit in meditation every single day, but none of it is gonna bring either one of us an inch closer to enlightenment. The thing that I seek is that which I am. Oh brother... I need some ice cream!

  • Buddism, Zen are of course a Religion, because they depend us to the great Mystery, called " Creator", God, Allah or what ever you want. All these Energys are a part of the great universe and last but not leat-----GOD! In us and in everywhere

  • wrong.

  • what am i called if i knew this all already naturally not knowing of Zen?? please reply..thanks!!

  • When one's mind is pure and concentrated, it's very clear. Wisdom arises. With wisdom, one can see the truth regardless of religion and background.

    This is called wisdom.

  • Rice cakes

  • Rice cakes

  • what i wanna know is why does he say that buddhism is not a religion before bowing down to a statue and making smoke for this statue? Whats that about. Im not saying its wrong but can someone explain it to me so I can justify it?

  • The Buddha is not a god, but merely an example of what can be achieved.

He was a teacher. Bowing down to him, is just a sign or respect.

  • Bowing to Buddha is not bowing to a him outside of ourselves and neither to a person who lived many years ago, it is bowing to the living Buddha. The living Buddha is not inside or outside. The living Buddha is doing the bowing.

  • Thanks for your comment. I add : the living Buddha is yourself and not an other Buddha because you are determined to go to the awakening if YOU WANT REALLY TO REALIZE YOURSELF.

  • @Fallaji Not was, but is. H.H. Dorje Chang Buddha III is alive on earth again.

  • Rice cakes

  • It's respect and it's ceremony. Hate to say it (I know I really shouldn't say it) but essentially it's BS.

  • Thank you. I needed that!

  • Great introduction. The music was a little distracting though

  • Great primer video and the music is great!

  • I didn't even notice the music untill i read the comments on it.. It shows the lack of concentration our generation has obtained.

  • Buddhism is about obtaining self-awareness of ones self and their surroundings.

    The music is distracting.

  • "...we practice being aware of our surroundings through the five sense organs, hearing, seeing, smelling, taste and touch. As we sit, we allow ourselves to hear sounds, we allow ourselves to arise in our being, and we let them be. We don't react (...)"

  • Sensie!
