txtabby, you are very naive. Economic power of oil industry is so strong, nobody ever could circumvent it. You can bet, in 2047 we can celebrate 100 years of UFO cover up in dignity - and will still power our car with fossile fuel but for US$ 100/gallon (or so).

Well okay, but I think you are the naive one here. In 2047 there will be no gas, and quite possibly, there will be no dollars. Besides, by then most if not all vehicles will be powered by some sort of hybrid or hydrogen fuel cell technology. $4 a gal. gets people annoyed. $4.50 you'll see more SUV's and large trucks on used car lots than ever before. $5+/gal, car makers can't make fuel efficient vehicles fast enough. The time to switch to another power source is NOW. :)

txtabby, In 2047 fossile fuels will still be available, but they will be replaced against fuel plants. Hunger will be not a matter then, since third world will be ignored. However fuel prices can climb without any problems to 10, 25, 50 - or even 100$/gal.

We have already much better alternative energy sources than hydrogen - but nobody ever will use it.

Maybe, you will be surprised, but e.g. a hyperspace cycled pulse plasma fusion of boron and protons (=hydrogen nuclei) yields beta-particles (aka electrons) - what is electricity. And that's not SF. E.g. SNL is currently building a reactor based on that technology (while ITER waste taxpayer's resources). Google for the term "Linear transformer driver" to get details.
