  • I wish people would stop saying they suck live. If you were a true modest mouse fan you would admire the rawness of it

  • they suck live

  • @Artorius210 Live performences always sound worse. They cant have 50 times to play it right then edit it. Also live performences are very stessful.

  • youtube.com/watch?v=4bP_sfQ6iks

  • God damn this song really is better live

  • check out a cover of this song, it's awesome

    /watch?v=3ExWsVFJlFo

    thanks:)

  • Id be more disapointed if Modest Mouse did it straight forward and 'correct' to be honest !

  • @msammas That's funny because I absolutely adore Modest Mouse as well as Phoenix. Just shows people can like a range of music... :)

  • i love how gross sounding this is. Modest Mouse is supposed to sound like this, rough and unpolished and really fucking weird... not polished like most indie music is. If you want clean cut music, listen to Vampire Weekend or Phoenix

  • idk, the frontmans (no clue on the names) amp sounds really tweaked, and im pretty sure he uses a wah pedal on the recording. but thats just me, i may be just dumb :P

  • hate when people say "it's out of tune" shit!!! they just don't undertand the magnificent floating tremolo....fuckin' like it!

  • it looks like Issac actually showered for this show, and ,luckily, Joe Plummer isn't there

  • This performance is to show you that a great and happy anthem like this has a great dark side to it, but it doesnt matter because Modest Mouse knows everything floats on in the end.

  • Sounds like shit. I don't give a fuck what you say, go suck a dick if you think that sounds good.

  • @Commiteee lol enjoy listening to oasis and system of a down you fucking tool.

  • @misterbuckethead You like Buckethead and the Flaming Lips. :|

I'm obviosuly replying to a kid who thinks "Zo0mG buckethead so cool nd good he taps nd is so pro like fuck u for like 2 popular bands u fuckn tool im so indie yet \such a hypocrite at the same timem im so hxc indie for lie\fe eheheheleleekeke me so cool" Atleast they can tune/Stay in key you fuckin' waste.

  • @Commiteee wow you really must not know buckethead's music. he does more than fucking Jordan from guitarhero you know. if you listened to any albums like electric tears or colma you might see that he's actually more of an ambient musician. fucking ignorant fuck. and lol you don't like the flaming lips and interpol but if you think soad and oasis are better than either of those two you're just fucking dumb. lol you're so paranoid you think people are trying to be cool through their music taste.

  • @misterbuckethead Sorry buddy, you're a faggot. I never said Buckethead sucks, but I bet you wanna suck his dick along with Slash and anyother over-rated piece of trash. Oh, and good job on the whole SOAD, I mean my youtube is pretty old and I'm not even a very big fan of there's anymore but good job looking at my favorites to insult me! Flaming Lips and Interpol are terrible. And I know your type, you are trying to be cool. There's a reason why so many people like the same bands (AKA Indie trsh

  • @Commiteee lol i don't give a fuck how many people listen to the music i enjoy you fuckwit! if i was trying to be cool i would namedrop a shit ton of bands and say im cool for knowing them. i don't get it, you listen to plenty of shitty music so you should be able to see the fact that this is how the song is performed and that's how modest mouse does their shows. anyone who's listened to anything before good news will know that. their older stuff doesn't get played so people don't know it as wel

  • @misterbuckethead and slash along with the other testosterone junkie shredders can suck my dick, buckethead isn't an egomaniac like eddie van halen or petrucci. obviously, otherwise he might, you know, release his actual name.

  • @misterbuckethead Also, I like how on your profile you have so many bands that you like under your favorites. That's quite the joke how you claim to like that many bands and say I'M a tool when you have Oasis under your likes. It's cool that you just add any popular band and or indie bands so people think you're diverse and "hip". Like arcade fire is fucking terrible but Indie fags like them so it figures it'd show up on your favorites. You're a joke.

  • @Commiteee lol it's a copy/paste straight from the myspace i had. Probably from before i realized that oasis had one decent song called wonderwish or something. you can't get it through your head that that's the music i listen to because i enjoy it apparently, so you're just an ignorant asshat. do you think that i just made a youtube account so i could be uber-indie and hipster just to get attention, which, if you look, i get none of. it's too bad that you're so close-minded, man. expand a bit.

  • @misterbuckethead u mad? you're a hypocrite with a bad/fake taste in music and you think this song sounds good when it's obviously out of key or tune. you're probably an indie fag irl and i'm not going to waste time on you. you're band is terrible and you're not a very good guitarist.

  • @Commiteee lololol good arguments man way to maintain composure :p

  • damn that guy can sing

  • I feel like this version of Float On would have sounded like this had it been on an older album. I like it quite a bit.

  • I know many of you love this version, but I didn't care for the guitar fills and the lead singer's guitar work. It was poor in this particular performance.

  • they certainly can play live performances with each one so unique that you don't know what to expect.....so great! his bad singing is part of why they rock..i dig them!!!

  • i love this song its like the only song that sound like the video im mean its just nice

  • modest mouse is modern poetry.

  • I think it's great he tuned the guitar differently, it added some flavor to the performance. If every song when performed live sounded the same as its studio counterpart, why the fuck would anyone go to a concert?

  • @felixcorrea89 lmao! you must not be a true modest mouse fan to not understand it..

  • this band + weed = beyond epic

  • @cosmin5678 piggybacking off of someone else commenting on the same song. you're made of fail

  • Arguing that he wanted his guitar to be out of tune doesn't make it ok, it's still out of tune lol

  • haha... nice "Float On" version.

  • i know its suppose to sound like that but sounds gay, but all together its an awesome song

  • did anyone notice that was the club owner/ devil from tenacious D?

  • did anyone notice that was the club owner/ devil from tenacious D?

  • Just noticed: "We both got fired on exactly the same day, that we were gunna quit it anyway"

Does he always sing that line live? It's not in the CD version.

  • this song sounds soo good live.

  • The most devastatingly honest band you may ever hear.

  • modest mouse rules, but there lead singer is kind of a spaz with a slight speech impediment.

  • Comment removed

  • I seriously Hated this band when I first heard them, but MM grew on me.

The lead singer sounds like he has downs at times, but I still like the band.

  • @tetrisclock Me too. My g/f has listened to modest mouse for years and I always hated them. Recently i started to like them but when i first heard float on i thought these guys sucked! They are now one of my favorites!

  • i really like this, i don't know what everyones chatting about?

  • the leadd guitar is a little overdrived sound

  • If you watch some of their earlier live performances of this song they were somewhat dull. I like to see them evolve on stage performance. There great.

  • and we'll all float on okay-ay

  • ~~~~ AND WE'LL ALL FLOAT ON ~~~~~~

  • he changes the words at the end of the second verse. its cool.

  • You're all retards. The song is performed perfectly. It's modest mouse... it's supposed to sound all rough and uneasy. It's better this way.

  • Yes, idiots.

  • exactly. that is there sound

  • that's right me too i don't like music that sound perfectly good, i like it rough too!! alright, fuck the conformism, that suck

  • i'm totally with yo man but its conformity not conformism

  • @5lbTumor they expect playback or something like all these new bands......with lyp sync.

  • crash, I don't see how him singing differently than in the recorded version equates to bad.

  • basist look like heath ledger?

  • @ykoshy that's funny since Heath directed a Modest Mouse music video

  • I really like this version.

  • theyre coming to my state on wednesday... I wish I could see them ):

  • it was a little rough in the first half, but after that mellow instrumental section, the blue lights come up and they are miraculously in time and roughly in tune with each other. the last refrain is a joy to watch. so i'm not convinced that all the sloppy parts were intentional. i had fun seeing them back in the day, but some shows were rough...but they are a hell of a live act now...just saw them at the aragon last night- tight set despite the acoustics!

  • They still sound pretty good to me!

  • what kind of jacket is jeremiah green wearing?

  • The parts that don't sound right to people are truly on purpose, Isaac loves mixing everything up!

  • they dont sound to bad...its just the beginnings kinda messed .... but otherwise they sound really good

  • how hard is it for people to realize that it isn't the instrument that is off but his voice. i am a huge modest mouse fan, but his voice isn't always in key when he is live

  • His guitar isn't out of tune, they just change things up live.

  • I wish they played it more like the Album version and not tried to change it up

  • I think Dann needed a better guitar tech, cause his guitar is really out of tune...

  • He wants it to sound that, I assure you its not that hard to tune an instrument....if he wanted it in tune he could have done it himself

  • Exactly

  • man this is so bad, especially the intro what were they thinking..

  • why are they distuned? :(

  • His B string is so flat :(

  • Haha, the crowd.

  • This version is quite better than others live I've seen..

  • is always kinda screw up live.

  • This is one of those bands that is exponentially better live than in a recording studio. I don't own any of their albums but I'd love to see them live.

  • their the best band ever! they have the best instramentalists

  • they're

I wouldn't say that. Best band still playing together right now maybe.

  • naa

  • Well, bands that I like that are still recording are Modest Mouse, Muse, White stripes. Thats really it. I mean if RHCP got it together then RHCP would be the best band right now, but otherwise, Modest Mouse is on top.

  • hmm naa there are a couple more still recording that you missed out...You gotta search a little bit more.I think your ones are a little bit...overrated for what they really are.

  • Nuh uh. The ones I mentioned are all great and original. Who else sounds like Muse? They are not overrated. Just because a band is popular doesn't mean they are overrated.

  • No dude, there are ALOT of underrated bands who are great. You just havent heard of them...Don't be so arrogant and think you know all of the bands in the uk.

  • A lot.

I never said I knew all the bands in the UK. I don't know any UK bands.

All I ever said was that I think Modest Mouse are the best band out right now. Them and Muse. What's wrong with me stating my opinion?

  • Nothings wrong with your opinion. But you said there are no more good bands in england anymore...And i just think that was wrong...Modest mouse are shit live though....You gotta have a good live set before you call yourself a good band.

  • I never said that or england. I think they are the best band still recording albums. That's it.

  • Fine ok.

  • they are shit live? Have you ever seen them live? Like, live not recorded? Because they were miles away from shit when I saw them....

  • your in luck, cause rhcp are going to start recording in fall

  • they are not. where are you getting that info from. John frusciante does not want to continue recording with them, he's on an indefinite hiatus.

  • when I hear him live, he always sings the chorus the same as any other live concert, but its different than the CD version. I think he prefers one version of the chorus over the other...

  • With this song, u mean like.. how he sings it high?

  • yeah. And its just different in general

  • I guess :/

Hahaha, but if u listen to the CD version, if you listen VERYY closly he kinda sings it high O.O.... but it IS different in gerenal.

  • @Willro91

The part the lead singer sings in the chorus is in the studio version, it just isn't nearly as prominent as the back-up vocals are. If you listen to the performance of this they did that aired on pbs, you can listen to both parts of the chorus a lot more clearly.

  • fix what?

  • only people with no life flag videos

  • drummer just as good, they both have skills.

  • My favorite is on Letterman or was it Kilborn? The one where they actually had Benjamin Weckyl playing the drum line.. Because he is a sick drummer and actually plays the drum line correctly. I love Jeremiah, but it just doesn't groove the way it's supposed to the way he plays it.

  • I think it means Oh My Jonas.....

    I know a girl who says that a lot....and it's annoying. Hah.

  • Of all the live versions I like this best - it's a great performance and the improv guitar noise fits good. On top of that it's mixed nice.

I think this is a good example of how everything can come together just right in a live environment.

  • great performance

  • very good man!!!

  • ooooh, such a great live perfomance. Im thnkn...... Straight to favorites

  • diff drummer for jimmy, this dudes lame, craigers had the best float on performance.

  • it means "oh my Jahad" C'mon, everyone knows that.

  • ahaha

  • oh my jesus? haha idk

  • i love it sounds sick wen he whameys

  • omj i lov itt

  • I can't understand what he's saying but its sounds great overall 5/5

  • fucking amazing bands are always best live.

  • bit out of tune, but it doesnt affect their preformance.

  • Amazing performance, cool guitar tune. Good singer a great song.

  • singer is solid

  • this is the best song in the world. i swear ill meet him before i die. oh my no way.

  • I heard this song maybe 8 years ago but couldn't recall the artist nor the title, but then one day a friend had it on his cd-player in his car. I swear to God we almost crashed when he played it. Even though i didn't drive the car

  • this wasnt released 8 years ago

  • Pwnt.

  • bahha your a fucking idiot, that shit just came out

  • damn, you're right. 4 years then - almost 5...

    fuck it..

  • en70y is at least from the year 2011!

  • That was a dick thing to say, Kimmel.

    Awesome performance by Modest Mouse.

  • whoa the lead sounds way different

  • I think they echo it in the recording to give it a unique sound.

  • reverb

  • i love the twangy-ness in the guitars. also i love how the lead singer gets into it on stage

  • Is that Ben, or Jeremiah on drums, I can't quite tell?

  • damn these guys play at alot of talk shows they should be hittin up big venues

  • I love the emotion he put into his songs. I would love to see them live.

  • Wheres there second drummer?

  • Never mind i didnt mean that.

  • that was before they got one.

  • I notice this style has a little dub/groovemetal/distortion influence goin on. I wonder how primus would play this song.

  • i bet if primus and modest mouse were on the same stage, there would be some type of crazy cool combustion/implosion and it would kill everyone there. and if primus played this song they would add a mad trippy bass line.

  • well, yeah, they probably would, but my point was that the primus style centers around playing off-key tones that would normally sound terrible but since they're played in such a groovy way, you can't help but like it.

This song has some intentional off-key sounds going through it and I just wonder what would happen if primus were to...

  • I´ve just seen the video and i think that this "Float on live" version is different but very good, this is a colorful note to this great song, also i see the people on the stage very excited for it. They are Modest Mouse.

  • i gotta say whatever pretentious bollocks people say about playing it differently every time or improvising this is a bad performance by them. maybe they were pissed off by the fact that the presenter seemed to suggest that this was the only worth while thing they have done in 10 years.

  • not sure if that's an explaination for the performance but i was even pissed at jimmy kimmel when i heard the intro. "they started 10 years ago and now they have a hit song."

  • Ok, I thought it was only me, but yeah, what a douchebag that Jimmy..

  • honestly I didn't think anything into it. I don't think he would have any reason to insult them purposely.

  • yeh your probably right, just my paranoid state of mind in full flow

  • wats up with the guitar-melody its nothing like the studio version....

  • its called improvisation...

  • that's what they do live and he's not using an effect

  • it's called dramamine

  • intentionally playing out of tune sounds good when done right.

  • dramamine is a completely different song. not even the same album. what are you talking about?!

  • go look at it again. it will make sense, i promise

  • Look at him bark away!

  • i used to think tht but then wen u think more about it if they sound the same live wat would b the point of goin to see them!! live u get a diff version like a stripped back or diff octive style jus lil differences tht make u like the music more an in diff ways! if u wanna hear the song as it is on the album listen to the album!

  • There isn't necessarily any less 'talent' involved here. It is different and done with a degree of taste. There are plenty of people who can play jazz or metal guitar who decide to play three chord punk instead-- but they arent less talented. There is a certain aesthetic here. Speaking from experience and from observing other bands, exploring how you can play songs live is part of the fun. A lot of times, the songs just kinda take off on their own when you are in a group setting like that.

  • Modest Mouse is just amazing bottom line..

  • "they have a big hit song now" ... I think the majority of their songs are big hits.

  • Yeah guys, they are supposed to sound out of tune. Haven't you heard any of their songs? They all sound slightly out of tune.

  • Actually, it's supposed to be out of tune.

  • Wow! This band sounds great live!

  • yea they are out of tune, every insrument is, probably automation on the tracks from the tv

  • effects dude, lol. sounds out of tune but as a matter of fact it's not.

  • they're supposed to be tuned that way. I like this better than the album version

  • loving the guitar =]

  • what are you talking about this is almost as good as the album version!!

  • yea it sorta sounds identical to the album lol...
