@Blueprophet: It was not so much the boxing technique as it was the boxing glove. The glove really transformed what boxing used to look like to what it looks like to day. The same thing occurred in the late 1920's to MT when the "modern" boxing glove was introduced to the sport..
I think the reason behind the old style Muay Thai is that they used to use elbows for blocking ,smash you're hands against an elbow block without globes and you're hand is broken ,could be the reason behind the bandages .Muay Thai started as a martial art for war not as a sport with globes .
Wow, you can see from this old footage and others from other martial art styles, how much western boxing(50s & up) has changed all martial arts in terms of stances, movement and combos in full contact fighting. This looks nothing like current ring and barenuckle matches in action today. Reason being...boxing. How was Asia not able to invent western style boxing naturally centuries ago? Tradition...TOO MUCH tradition AND subservience to the MASTERS. IMO of course.
what do you have against the korat tradition of boxing. it's quite formidable. for the record, chaiya is a younger format than the other provinces and it's origins are quite possibly of chinese. nothing against it, though. pretty to watch. good for movies.
@ 0:57 'siamese boxing is the real art of self defence. it teaches defence against eveything, kicks, fist blows, elbow jabs, knee punches, or what have you?'
love the video. its interesting to see how different this is to modern day thai boxing. this looks like something you might see in china, burma, or else where in the asia pacific. very cool.
thanks, gooddogfilms for posting this. this is truly the real muay thai of ancient. two of these fighters come from different provinces based on the way they fight and wrap their hands.
Excellent footage and i've also been waiting to see Fight or Flight for about 2 years since I saw a little write up about it on boards and then in the IFI program. Can't Wait to get a copy, well done Peter.
Eh, Western Boxing in the 1920's was remarkably different to what it is today. Hard to draw comparisons between two things when neither has been static for the duration.

FYI, Ancient Muaythai will seperate to 4 parts of Thailand
North=Muay Saw, Muay Jerng focus on fast kick both left and right style wrap hand to half arm
North East=Muay Lum, Muay Korat focus on hard round kick and round punch style wrap hand from hand up to elbow to absorb impact from hard kick
Central=Muay Lopburi, Muay Pranakorn focus on straight punch, fast get in and out wrap hand to half arm
South=Muay Chaiya focus on concisely offence and defence very good with elbow wrap hand and wrist
