The charge of the light brigade was a small part of the battle of balaklava that captured the imaginations of the victorian public. Contrary to popular myth ,the light brigade were not wiped out in fact only around 100 were killed.If it wasn,t for tenysons poem it would have been forgoten. The cavalry charge at Chilinwala a few years earlier was much worse but nobody talks about that.
The Charge of The Light Brigade, 25th October 1854. The charge occurred during the battle of Balaklava in the Crimean War, when 658 British cavalrymen, acting on a misinterpreted order, rode for more than a mile under heavy fire to attack Russian artillery positions, killed the gunners, then retreated, having lost 110 dead, 180 wounded or taken prisoner and 475 horses killed. - Source - The Independent 2004. - Madness perhaps but considering the blunder, their objective was achieved.
You never hear a sniffter about the Charge of the Heavy Brigade, that was some achievement that part of Balaklava, the Brit Cavalry certainly punched way above their weight in that one.
The charge of the light brigade was a classic military blunder.The cavalry were not meant to charge down into the valley and attack the main battery. The focus was turned to the bravery of the men instead of the incompetance of the commanders.Same old story with Brittish warfare , look at Isandhlwana,Rorkes Drift and Dunkirk.
@rollindanny57 my personal view was that they were psychopaths, it was the best brigade in the british army and they knew it. They could not wait to get stuck into the Russians and charged, nothing can be done about it , Just shear enthusiasm!
@stegorm The majority of historians on the subject agree that it was a mix up in communications. Bear in mind that at the time communication meant officers riding from the General in command out to the soldiers in question with a note or the words relayed from the officers memory. It is believed that General Raglan ordered the Light Brigade to re-capture a battery of British guns that had been captured and were being taken. The messenger Captain Nolan told Cardigan, "take those guns"...
@stegorm When Cardigan said "which guns" Nolan just pointed down the valley (at heavily entrenched Russian batteries surrounded by more Russian artillery on the crest of each side of the valley). Now Cardigan didnt see fit to question this order and so charged down the valley, shot at from three sides. Reports indicated that Captain Nolan was a "psychopath" and actually joined in the charge, galloping ahead of the main body. He was also one of the first to die, his head blown off by a cannon
I never said it was a huge success, what I said (look below) was that "I always thought the battle was a draw" and that casualties were about equal on both sides.
For cavalry being driven off look to the 'thin red line' or the charge of the heavy brigade.
But: "To the Russians the Battle of Balaclava was a victory and a welcome boost in morale they had captured the British redoubts (from which seven guns were taken to Sevastopol as trophies), and had gained control of the Woronstov Road. The loss of the outer ring of defences severely restricted Allied movements and confined them to a narrow area between Balaclava and Sevastopol."
Those 670 did what they could do that's why half of them became casualties.
But I didn't see them driving any cavalry to the rear as well as I can't say the Russian battery was taken - they rather went through it and back suffering huge losses.
Let alone the Russian army wasn't "completely cut in two" by 670 men.
If you know any historians saying that the Battle of Balaclava was a huge success of the British Army then quote those historians, why not?
Nonsense, the 93rd stood their ground, between the Russian cavalry and the port of Balaklava. A thin red streak tipped with a line of steel. The russians then fled, they shat it, the Jocks showed them the Modern Infantry warfare at the time. Get over it. God Bless the 93rd.

Yep!
Russians gave Brits a good bashing there!
Heightofhate 2 years ago
@Heightofhate
Thin Red Line and Heavy Brigade happened the same day.
2210ethan 2 years ago
The thin red line didn't hurt much.
Both sides suffered the same casualties that day.
Heightofhate 2 years ago
Agreed, so the bashing was equally distributed.
2210ethan 2 years ago
Only the outcome was different.
For Russians the bashing was worth it.
For Russia's enemies it wasn't so.
Heightofhate 2 years ago
@Heightofhate
Really? I thought the battle was a draw, and the war was an Allied Victory...
2210ethan 2 years ago
Well, it wasn't so.
Just read my comment from above one more time.
Here another quotation on this battle:
"The loss of the Light Brigade had been such a traumatic event that the allies were incapable of further action that day.
The British 1st and 4th Infantry Divisions, therefore, returned to the plateau."
Heightofhate 2 years ago
@Heightofhate
Yes, I can quote Wikipedia too;
"We cut their army completely in two, taking their principal battery, driving their cavalry far to the rear. What more could 670 men do?"
2210ethan 2 years ago
@2210ethan
Those 670 did what they could do that's why half of them became casualties.
