I generally don't care for Dan Fogelberg. Most of the time, he's just too soft-off and mainstream pop-like for my taste. But, I have to admit this is a pretty tremendous song. A classic example of "Anthem Rock." Addressing a very important social and political issue with intelligence and dignity. Great chorus hook, hard and heavy dynamics in the playing, great guitar work and straightforward, mature vocal delivery. Why didn't he do more music like this?
@laszloseverance He did do more music like this. It's just the radio hasn't broadcast it like they have his mellower hits. Look up "Blind to the Truth," "She Don't Look Back," and "Beyond the Edge." He does some pretty kick-ass stuff on those songs.
"Kill the fire and turn to the sun". Most folks don't know how much potential there is in large scale solar plants. Google concentrating solar thermal; it is a technology that in places that get lots of sun, can largely replace nuclear power as a massive source of electrical energy. You heard it here first, concentrating solar thermal power is the energy source of the future.
To the folks out there who have no idea how great Dan Fogelberg was, he could rock with the best of them, with those awesome vocals! He needs to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, or I'll believe it's a sham! Not only did Dan rock, he rocked for a good cause--the elimination of deadly nuclear power plants--I think Japan showed us how dangerous they can be when built in the wrong places! Peace and Love, BobbyK
32 years later and Three Mile Island is back in the news following the tsumani-induced Japanese nuclear disasters. I immediately thought of this song.
Worringly, the Japanese are probably the best nuclear managers on earth.
@chrisb1953: I thought of this as well. Dan Fogelberg nailed it on the head with this song. If Three Mile Island and epecially Chernobyl weren't enough to convince someone, then nothing is. There are benefits that come with harnessing parts of Earth's energy, but there can also be horrible consequences – especially when it's used without regard to long-term effects – because there is money to be made today.
@chrisb1953 my understanding was that Japan had a surface reputation for good nuclear management, but the evidence became clear after the disaster just how poorly they were in planning for preventative measures.
@aquariancalendar what do you propose as a substitute? Just asking, because wind and solar won't provide anywhere near enough anytime soon and many people seem adverse to drilling for more oil here.
@kikkiokioli We waste too much resources in this country...we don't need half of the energy that we waste. We don't run our society to make everyone as self sufficient as possible... oil companies and energy companys want customers for life..wage slaves...that spend their days working for the energy. I know how little energy the average family really needs..I lived off the power grid for 8 years with two kids in a passive and active solar house...so many houses since Reagan coulda been solar
@kikkiokioli The problem in Japan was that at one reactor, they stored spent rods that shouldn't have been kept there. Nuclear has been one of the safest, cleanest, and cheapest energy sources, and until wind and solar show any future, no investment capital will go to develop them. This was the era of no nukes liberalism and The China Syndrome propaganda, and Dan hopped right on it. With a nice sounding song, of course.
@adiadv10 You are right... only it would be stronger closer contamination. At least there is an ocean between us and Japan. If Diablo canyon goes... it is so close. Makes me wonder at the coincidence of the name Diablo which means Devil. In the tarot cards...the Devil card represents self inflicted bondage. WE can be from nuclear and it's waste...it only takes will, education and leadership.
great song

We better shut down those LA west coast plants or we will be in the same boat as Japan...except it will spread all over the US.
