@arkhatych Clarification: Six PLAYING strings. The remaining six go THROUGH the neck and unto the peg head, they are not played, but ring sympathetically with the ones that are. So you are right, 12 strings (for this instrument. some have 14), but only 6 are played.
@catmoondevil 6 PLAYING strings. The other 6 are not played but ring sympathetically. Some instruments have 14 (7 playing, 7 sympathetic). It is not standardized so you see many variants. A violin has very specific measurements, but not these. In addition, it is not tuned in 5ths like the violin. It is generally tuned to a D major chord, so for a 7 string instrument it would be A, d, a, d', f♯', a', d, but the tuning changed with the piece. Nothing is standard with the Viola d'amore.
it's more of a baroque instrument really... :-/ string intruments w/c can play both the continuo part and the treble part are a relatively recent invention ... :>
they do now... there is a maker in chicago named martin biller who will make them brand new... they are fabulous instruments (tom georgi, the man playing the V d'A in the video, had him make them), and I've played them. They are so awesome!!!! I'm a total fan!
Wow, wonderful sound, thank you for posting...for my information - wish to know the tuning, I lost my orientation :) many empty strings sounds very airy.
I lovwe your playing. Thank you for videos!

You don't even know how hard is getting one of these.

Why don't they make those anymore? True, it had a lot of tuning pegs, but it sounds better than the modern viola!
