I saw them on campus at the U of I in Circle in Chicago for a $1.00 with my student ID in 1977....Jaco Patorius was their Bass player at the time....One of The Best Concerts Ever!!
as much as I like the funky tunes i just fall for this rhodes psycodelic slow tracks, someone said it before you are right no rhodes playing comes close to hancok I mean u just know it is him in 5 seconds.those chords ar eoutta this world.I come across some by chance every once ina while and I go like crazy:wait amIN this is a hancok fukn phat chord!!!! lol
Bennie Maupin played both bass clarinet and saxello on this recording. Live, Herbie has a pretty baddass bass clarinet synth patch goin' on for 1975, hellzzyeah !!
Old skoolin' it!! Herbie having to manhandle four keyboards at once. You don't see that anymore. No MIDI, no sequencers, no pre-recorded samples or triggers. You just had to be aware of which keyboard had the sound you wanted, how to get to it, summon up the sound and play it without losing the groove. Technology changed all that today. You can program one digital synth to get all the sounds you want and even play it. No wonder music is so weak today. Bring back the masters.
@cathridge only dude able to handle 4 keybaords or the only one Ive seen is greg phillingahnes another beast, touring with Herbie last year toured with Stevie MJ and Toto.U name it
That's a weird looking soprano sax. I've seen them straight, curved (like a small alto), and with just the slight curve in the neck, but not like the one Maupin's playing here. I wonder if that's partly why he has that unique sound...?
@art2art it's not actually a soprano. It's called a Saxello. There are now "Semi-curved" sopranos that are based on the shape, but less-so. Rahsaan Roland Kirk used one.
@larrytoquieto nah dude, google the word "saxello" and you'll see what I mean. What he's playing is about half the size of a bass clarinet and made of metal, so... no.
Good God these guys are absolutely the best.... I love the variance in the way they play these songs... I had only ever heard the versions from the studio album and from the live album, "Flood". This just goes to show how telepathically brilliant this lineup was... there pocket is impeccable and no one makes the rhodes and other synths speak like Herbie does... except maybe Chick Corea in Return to Forever... Bravo!
When you touch it, a lil bit rubs of on you, so you gotta be careful, that's why we wanna dedicate it to the ladiessss.... Do that playa thang herb !! Mad track of course.
The song had a modal feel to it...the soprano played very lyrically and did not stray from the main melody too much, and even when he did, he was able to make it sound cohesive. I liked this tune before even I heard a recording of it, just by reading the chart. Now that I have heard it, I really dig it and can see how it can make the listener move! Yeah one for the ladies!
