Another reason why the Castro and SF generally became home to a large LGBT community is: at the end of WWII, military personnel from the Pacific theater were processed out of the service at the port of SF. Having seen the world and possibly combat, many were reluctant to return to "small town America" with its close mindedness, rejection & lack of jobs. There was a "live & let live" ethos in & around the Bay Area, so many gays & lesbians stayed, put down roots & flourished.

Wasn't "Trevor's" assertion that San Fran's history as a collection of "40,000 men" coming there for gold a bit of an argument for the "behavior" position..? Unless she/he MEANT to say that those 40,000 men were mostly GAY, and really came there because they KNEW that other men were going there, it lends itself to the argument that they LEARNED their behavior, after arrival. I can't tell if Palin is being polite or a bit of a jerk to Trevor. I mean, I certainly don't see the need to bring up Trevor's old name, and what pronouns Trevor happens to prefer are unknown to me (there are dozens of pronoun sets outside the traditional two) but Palin did use the female set. So... I don't know. Either Trevor uses female pronouns and has a male name now, and prob. identifies as genderqueer, or Palin is being something of a heel to a transperson. I hope it's the former.
